Chapter 117: Lupin pack - 12
Silas’s POV
As soon as I felt that touch, I glanced behind me—and there it was.
A small wolf cub stood there, its black fur blending with the shadows of the cave. Its blue eyes shone brightly, almost glowing in the dim light.
Seeing it, I instinctively jumped back, my body reacting before my mind could process anything. But in my sudden movement, Kael’s head bumped hard against the ground.
"Ah—what the fuck?" he snapped awake, rubbing his head.
But even with Kael cursing beside me, my entire focus was on the cub.
The werewolves outside had been trying to eat us. So seeing this cub here? My fear skyrocketed.
Who knows... maybe its parents are nearby. Just waiting for the right moment to attack.
"Kael, look over there!"
As soon as I spoke, Kael’s attention shifted to the cub. He immediately stood up, and seeing him do so, I followed suit. Instinctively, Kael stepped in front of me, shielding me.
"Is he alone here? I don’t think so. His parents must be nearby—no cub survives on its own."
Kael had a point. I was thinking the same thing. If there’s a cub, then its parents must be close.
And if they were anything like the werewolves we encountered earlier... we were in serious trouble.
"What should we do now? Should we run away from here?"
I asked while glancing at the cub. Just then, I noticed tears in his eyes. And in the blink of an eye, he shifted.
Agony was clear on his face as he transformed, and when he was done, a little boy stood in front of us.
He had brown hair, blue eyes, and was unbelievably cute. As I scanned him, a dream suddenly flashed through my mind.
The Moon Goddess had told me in my dreams that I would meet a child—our child. Mine and my four mates’.
Just as I was lost in thought, the child suddenly started crying. Taking small, unsteady steps toward us, he sobbed,
"Sob... Mumma... Mumm..."
He was coming toward me, calling me Mumma, but Kael was standing in front of me. Seeing him cry, I couldn’t hold myself back.
It didn’t matter if his parents came later or if this was some kind of trap—right now, all I wanted was to comfort him.
Seeing his tears, my heart ached. Without thinking, I pushed Kael aside, stepped forward, and scooped the child into my arms.
As I held him, he quickly wrapped his tiny arms around me, hugging me tightly.
"Waaahhh... Waaahhh... Mumma..."
I gently patted his head, my heart softening. Have I gone crazy? Believing in that damn dream and thinking this child is really mine? But... I’ve always had a soft spot for kids.
"Silas, what the hell do you think you’re doing?" Kael’s sharp voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"You’re hugging the child who was just in his true form! Don’t tell me you’ve finally lost your mind. If not, then put him down!"
I glanced at Kael, meeting his disapproving gaze.
"Kael, those wolves didn’t shift in front of us—they stayed in their true form. But this little kid shifted right before our eyes. At the very least, I’m sure he’s not a threat to us."
And even if this kid was one of those wolves, I still couldn’t imagine him standing against the two of us.
I glanced at Kael and saw the fear and anxiety on his face. But for me... there was nothing.
I no longer felt the same.
It was as if all my fears had disappeared—though I had no idea how.
I stood there for fifteen minutes, holding him. But after a while, I got tired—the kid had fallen asleep in my arms—so I sat down, settling him in my lap.
"You’ve got guts, Silas," Kael scoffed.
"That’s why you’re so eager to take care of your own death. Just wait until his parents show up. They’re not gonna thank you—they’ll probably throw a party after eating you."
I rolled my eyes.
"Kael, can you please shut up? We’re still stuck here, and the snowfall hasn’t stopped yet. What do you expect me to do? Harm this kid? Don’t tell me you seriously think this little one could kill you."
If it were a big wolf instead of this kid, I’d understand the threat to our lives. But what could this little one even do? Even if he tried to bite us, I doubt it would even work.
While I was focused on the kid, I didn’t feel the cold. But the moment I glanced around and the icy wind touched my skin, a chill ran through me.
Just then, Kael suddenly dropped his head onto my shoulder.
I flinched at first.
When I tried to move his head off my shoulder, I realized how cold he was. That was probably why his eyes were closed too.
Now, I didn’t know what to do anymore.
The snowfall wasn’t showing any signs of stopping—instead, it was only getting heavier.
And just then, I heard a howl.
It was distant, but I knew what it meant—those wolves were coming for this child. They would probably think we kidnapped him.
Still, I didn’t regret comforting him.
My body felt stiff, refusing to move. Even with Kael resting on my shoulder and the kid in my lap, I was freezing.
The temperature was only getting worse as time passed.
Just before my eyes closed, I thought I saw shine coming into the cave. But before I could say anything, everything went dark.
When I opened my eyes again, I found myself lying on a hospital bed.
The room was noisy, filled with the sounds of people talking and machines beeping.
I glanced up at the ceiling, trying to gather my thoughts, before quickly sitting up.
As I looked around, I realized the place was packed with patients.
Just as I was about to get off the bed, I felt something under the blanket near my feet.
Curious, I pulled the blanket away—only to see that kid sleeping at my feet, sucking his thumb.
