Chapter 37: The Monarch’s Ball [Part 3]

Eyes. So many that I have lost count—punctured my entire body. It felt like I was fatally stabbed with needles!

I stayed by Drevon’s side the rest of the evening, but I felt endangered with all this attention. They were all Lycans, and I was the only breathing human in their midst.

Well, they can all stare as much as they want; they can’t get me now. Hehe.

I took another drink from the crystal goblet. I shouldn’t have more wine, but this was the only thing keeping me rooted. This was the plan: show them that I was favored by the monarch, that alone would secure my safety.

But I felt like I made everything worse. I didn’t dare to look to my far right, because Sloane was there and her death glares didn’t go unnoticed. Don’t get me started on the Dowager.

I clung to Drevon’s arm more, and looked at him. He was grinning like an idiot. "What’s so funny, my liege?" I gritted quietly.

"I finally get to feel how soft they are."

"What—" I froze, bringing my gaze to my bosom pressing against his arm.

I gasped and attempted to step away, but he effortlessly grabbed my waist and brought me back to him.

He leaned closer and said. "You should stick more to me tonight. Don’t worry, we’ll be leaving soon."

I whispered back. "Just so you know, this is a formality. As soon as the night ends, we go our separate ways."

"Is that why you came to the ball? To show your face and cling to me the rest of the evening, only to shoo me away?"

It’s scary how accurate he was. Why call it a secret plan if he could sniff everything out?

"I have no idea what you’re talking about." I fluttered my lashes like an innocent puppy.

Gods! I need another drink. I placed my empty glass on the wine steward’s tray and grabbed another, but Drevon stopped me before I could bring it to my lips.

"That’s enough, Eloise."

I narrowed my eyes and purposely took the drink while watching him. "It’s only wine."

"Indeed, but too much will not be good for you," he said with an undertone of worry.

"I need it," I confessed. "Sticking to you takes too much work?"

"And why exactly are you sticking to me?" he teased as if he didn’t know the reason.

"Because everyone in this room wants my head, except you," I peered at him. "Right?"

"Trust me, little wife, I don’t want your head. And don’t worry, no one will get within a foot close to you without losing theirs."

I never knew he was a charmer and a jester.

"If you don’t want my head, then what do you want?"

His eyes darkened to the point I could no longer see the crimson color. "I shan’t indulge you in my thoughts."

"Why?" I urged.

He yanked me closer until there was not even an inch of space between us. He leaned down to me, our noses touched, and I forgot to breathe for a second.

"Because the things I want to do to you are not something you can handle, little wife. I’m not talking about being a gentleman, do you understand what I mean?"

I gulped audibly. "Cuddle?"

It took a beat before he barked a laugh, and I was startled by his chaotic response. If I thought eyes were on us before, then I thought wrong because now it felt like a full force was upon us.

"Cuddle?" Drevon snickered, far from dialing it down.

"My liege," Garrick walked to him and murmured something to his ear.

I used that opportunity to drink more wine. Dear gods! The level of embarrassment was getting too much. I only came here to act like a wife favored by her husband, yet this is becoming as planned? Or worse?

What exactly does he mean by not being a gentleman?

I shivered, shaking my head. Just be dumb about it. I eyed another drink on the table, and then the light dishes. I hadn’t eaten anything the entire day because there was so much to prepare for the ball.

I slipped out of Drevon’s hold to reach for something, but my ankle got weak, and I almost lost my footing, though a hand on my abdomen braced me.

"Careful now. What’s wrong?" Drevon asked worriedly.

"M-My legs are—" I couldn’t finish as the ache came again.

Oh no! I told Talia the heels were too high!

"Let me see," Drevon picked me up and placed me on a chair just beside the table.

My heart momentarily stopped when Drevon dropped to one knee, and I panicked. "W-What are you doing?" I whispered-hissed, my eyes looking at everyone, shock plastered on their faces as they watched their monarch kneel before a human.

"Checking your foot," he answered absentmindedly as he lifted the rim of my gown just enough to see my foot.

It was swollen.

"Why did you wear this?" He asked, suddenly displeased.

"It was perfect for my gown, that’s why," I shrugged.

"The sole is too thick," he analyzed as if mentally making plans for something.

"My liege, this is unsightly of you to—" I paused when he took my shoes off and stroked my ankles.

"Better?"

"It’s..." I trailed, suddenly lost for words.

It did sting a little, but his massage made it better. I couldn’t help it as my pulse raced, unable to comprehend his actions.

"Let’s retire for the night."

"What—" I couldn’t process his words when he hooked one arm under my knees and carried me up effortlessly.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, frightened that I might fall because he used one hand to hold me, and the other held my shoes.

He said something to the crowd, but I was too busy gawking at him and didn’t pay attention.

Drevon walked up the stairs, and the doors slammed shut behind him. He strode the quiet corridors, the chandelier’s lights strangely dimmed, the curtains were open, showing the moonlight at its peak.

Everything was just so surreal, and I began to wonder just how impossible this man was. He was like a daydream trapped in a nightmare.

"Why did you do it?" I asked, breaking the comfortable silence between us.

Drevon turned to me and having those crimson’s on me drowned me into a far deeper daydream, and this time I don’t want to wake up.

"Do what?" he asked.

"Leave your ball. Your people will—"

"I don’t want to talk about my people right now."

Okay then.

"Do you have feelings for me?"
