Chapter 36: The Monarch’s Ball [Part 2]
Shock painted on Mother’s face.
"Damon, what about him?" I changed the topic.
It was Mother’s turn to shoot me with her stony stare, but she said nothing of that matter. "Oh look, here she comes!"
Sloane walked up the stairs, dressed elegantly in a way that outshone the others present.
"What do you think, Drevon? Doesn’t she look beautiful like a rare jewel? The royal diamonds look good on you."
Sloane curtsied. "Thank you, Dowager, your gifts were lovely."
"How respectful too, seeing you glowing makes me happy."
"You honor me too much, Dowager."
"Of course I would, you’ll be my daughter soon."
I could feel Mother’s gaze on me now, drilling like a hole.
"My liege," she curtseyed to me, smiling brightly.
"Why don’t you ask her to dance?" Mother offered.
Sloane looked at me with a twinkle in her eyes, and all I did was stare blankly.
It was late, was Eloise sleeping right now? If she wasn’t, then what was she doing right now?
"My liege?"
"The monarch’s wife has arrived!" the Herald unexpectedly announced.
The music stopped, and everything came to a pause, all attention turning to the door. I rose to my feet when they spread open and revealed Eloise.
What is she...
I lost my trail of thoughts when she stepped into the light, and I forgot to breathe for a second.
Eloise wore a flowing gown of wine and black, fitted bodice, laced with thin embroidery, and sleeves draping her arms. Her skirt fell in smooth layers—dark at the edges, fading into pale cream.
Her curly hair was held behind with a golden hairpin. Jewelry the same color as my eyes adorned her neck and ears.
Not a word was said or heard; just a deep awe took over the entire hall as she descended the stairs gracefully, and my legs moved before I could stop myself.
Eloise’s eyes swept the space until they landed on me. I stretched my hand for her to take.
She gauged my reaction, but inevitably placed her hand on mine, and I held firm, helping her down the last flight of stairs.
"Am I late, my liege?"
"No," I murmured, unable to think clearly, for I just wanted to stand here and drink in the sight of her.
I didn’t want her to attend this ball, but the reasons for that went out the window when I uttered. "May I have this dance, little wife?"
Eloise blinked, fixing me with a pointed stare.
Always so suspicious.
"Yes."
I led her to the epicenter, and passed a silent, lethal look at the Orchestras, and they hurriedly began a note.
[Music: Wrecking Ball By Midnite String Quartet]
Eloise curtseyed to me before standing straight. She appeared anxious, her eyes moving to the crowd, locked in stillness.
I placed a hand under her chin to bring her focus back to me. "They don’t exist, nothing else does. It’s you and me."
She swallowed thickly.
"Do you know the waltz?" I asked just to be sure.
Eloise smirked in response, raising her hand, as did I, and we circled each other.
Pride swelled in my chest. She learned our waltz in that short amount of time? Or was she taught in those lessons of hers? Either way, I couldn’t help grinning all through, mesmerized by the way she flowed, her gown streaming with her movements, making her look like a fairy.
Her motions harmonized with mine, and I didn’t have much to worry about. However, I was concerned that she might strain herself with all this spinning. There was a lot of spinning.
As much as I wanted to cherish this moment and allow her to dance till her heart’s content, I had to halt this.
So the moment she spun back to me, I locked her in my arms, her back to my chest. I could hear her thudding heartbeat and her shuddering breaths.
She was already so tired, and I grew more worried, hoping she wouldn’t faint.
"Am I truly your wife?" she murmured to me faintly, her eyes passing around everyone while I just looked at her with utmost attention. "Your people don’t think so."
I leaned down to her, muttering in her ear. "Then let them watch as I choose you over and over again."
Eloise pulled away from me to continue the dance, but I tugged her gently back to me. I clutched her waist to keep her there.
Her entire body seized up, yet that didn’t stop her from talking. "Is it true that you’re marrying Sloane?" she asked in a dark tone.
The thought of her being bothered about it excited me, but at the same time, I wanted to clear the air and let her know that there was no one else.
"My people think I should," I said, desiring to prolong this a little. I loved that emotion in her eyes, the very one she tried to mask.
On cue, she scowled at me with an annoyance worth a cold winter. "What do you think, my liege?"
I caressed her cheek with my hand. Goddess! She was so soft under my touch. I want to feel more of her. I’m becoming far more addicted.
"That they should all keep their opinions to themselves or I’ll shove it up their asses."
Her mouth agape as she turned to dance another order, but I pulled her back to me again.
"They are your people," she whispered-hissed.
"My people love their monarch. If they want me to be happy, then they should get used to the fact that I’ve made my decision."
Eloise paused, staring at me in disbelief as if it wasn’t the answer anticipated.
The music stopped, and the crowd brimmed with murmurs.
I placed my hand at the small of her back to reassure her that I was right here. This was exactly what I tried to avoid; I didn’t want their hostile eyes on her, making her uncomfortable.
However, to my surprise, Eloise stood with her head high up. A smile tugged at my lips, bedazzled by this divine creature beside me.
She took a risk, a very big one, and I’m very impressed by her ability to do so in such circumstances.
She just made my night.
"Why is everyone so dull?" I pitched to the crowd, bringing Eloise closer to my body. "The evening has just gotten far more interesting. My wife has made her entry."
