Maids VS Apocalypse -
Chapter 64: Only if necessary.
Chapter 64: Only if necessary.
I followed the Sun with my eyes as it slowly sank behind the western mountains. I turned east and saw the Benevolent Moon take to the sky, bringing with her the Veil of Darkness and an army of Evil Banishing Stars.
Some beasts still persisted even as nightfall arrived. Their movements grew dull and sluggish, making them an easy pick for those of us tasked to clean up after the real fighting had already ended.
I take my spear, focus my mind, and reach for the depths of my Soul. One by one, I felt the Runes form over my head. First was the one linking me and the Moon, second was the one that channels her powers. The third made me a gate for it to enter the world and the rest bound it to my will.
Seeing her light form a blade over the head of my spear, I turn my gaze to the beast coming my way. I thrust my weapon forward and prevent it from swinging its claws.
Without the sun to fuel it with power, the beast didn’t have the strength to cry. Even if I remained still it couldn’t hope to reach me.
There were more beasts to slay so I moved to end this one’s miserable existence. I pull my spear and let its wretched blood burn off of the blade. I then raise it high and bring it drawing a single arc through the air.

When he opened his eyes, a familiar ceiling met Mark. His thoughts were still a bit slow and sluggish so it took him a few moments to realize he was lying on his bed.
Jumping up to his feet, he began frantically looking around the room.
Only when his gaze met a pair of ruby eyes did he heave a sigh of relief.
"Did you have a bad dream, Master?" Lara asked in an even tone. Her lack of expression showed her complete disinterest in the matter.
"Nah, I just... I was worried you wouldn’t be here." He smiled while shaking his head. "Glad to see you’re still around."
Despite everything, the thought that everything he went through might have been nothing but a dream never left his mind. Previously, he had been hoping for it to be true, but now his opinion was the exact opposite.
He remembered being pulled out of the rubble but nothing else, which helped him realize that his MP must have run out around that time.
"Our contract still stands," Lara replied. "I have seen no reason to break it... yet."
"Is that so."
The last word she said stunned Mark for a good five seconds after which he decided to pretend he didn’t hear it. Getting off the bed, he stretched his body and
"Nothing beats sleeping in one’s own bed." He didn’t know how right that statement was, considering this was only the second time he slept well on that bed. He glanced at his maid and added with a smile. "Though I would have appreciated it more if I woke up with my head on your lap."
"That would be quite troublesome," Lara replied, her expression unchanging. "I do not mind if it is for a few minutes, but staying in the same position for hours is too much."
Mark blinked a couple of times before his smile widened.
"So a few minutes would be fine?"
As if sensing his intentions, Lara furrowed her elegant brows.
"Only if necessary."
A most serious expression took over Mark’s face just then.
"I think I might die if I don’t enjoy Lara’s lap pillow at least once every day."
Lara’s eyes widened ever so slightly before she pursed her lips in a frown.
It seemed that she failed to discern that he was jesting at first then recognized her mistake, leading to her getting slightly upset.
Mark found the change in her expression quite adorable but he had to suppress his smile in fear that her anger would turn to him.
As they stood in silence for a few minutes, Lara finally relented and heaved a sigh.
"No more than ten minutes."
"I will make sure to enjoy every second of it," Mark replied.
Even if he never expected it to work, a win was still a win. He was about to request his ten minutes for the day when he heard a noise coming from the living room.
Glancing at the door, the question of how he got to his apartment popped up in his mind.
"The Peace Keepers requested to use the kitchen to prepare dinner," Lara said. "I saw no reason to refuse."
Remembering that they were supposed to meet the rest of Ramsay’s team after arriving in Stonegate, Mark sighed and scratched his head. He placed restraints around himself so he wouldn’t start panicking right away, and after taking a deep breath, he slowly exhaled then looked around.
His bedroom appeared to be in great shape which told him Malarak’s invasion didn’t reach the area where he lived. No one seemed to have messed with his stuff either and nothing was missing with his workstation.
Mark always made sure to not leave any of his personal articles outside his bedroom. It was a necessary precaution to avoid his lack of sleep causing some kind of trouble and because of that the rest of his apartment was always ready to receive guests.
After checking himself and seeing he was still wearing the same uniform handed to him by the Peace Keepers, as evidenced by the dirt and dust covering it, he heaved another sigh and turned his gaze to the door.
Beyond it were the people who would become his teammates and work with him on reaching Hope’s End and Emberwood. He was well aware that they were nothing more than bodyguards tasked with keeping an eye on him, but that did little to diminish the nervousness he felt about meeting them.
