Chapter 89: 24 episodes of Ice Fire 3
The green blades of grass were instantly burned to charcoal, the yellow ground roasted into gray, cracked ravines, and the blue sky was shrouded in black smoke. The circle of fire slowly contracted towards the center, drawing closer and closer to Lynch. The scorching sensation made the young mage recall the feeling of the Molten Lava Channel.
Lynch tried to use magic here, but he couldn’t gather any arcane energy.
The circle of fire burned closer and closer...
Deluo ran faster and faster because Lynch, on his back, had just let out a painful groan, the mage’s eyelids twitching rapidly like someone dreaming. But Lynch had once told him that having the Eye of Insight meant he had given up the right to dream, and nothing that could induce dreams affected him— not even the rare Dream Plants, the Ice Moon Grass. But now Lynch seemed to be experiencing a terrible nightmare, which was definitely abnormal. Deluo didn’t dare to voice his worries to Nimo beside him, as this young dwarf was actually very fragile.
They were still sprinting through the ice tunnel, where thick layers of crystal ice covered everything, yet it wasn’t cold at all; the temperature remained pleasant, and only by pressing a hand to the icy walls could one feel the piercing cold.
Nimo stumbled several times behind but immediately propped himself up with his hands and continued running. His short legs moved quickly to keep pace with Deluo ahead. Their sole goal was to move forward, as the sound of flowing water beckoned from the direction they were heading.
"We’re almost there!" Deluo shouted ahead, sliding swiftly over the smooth icy surface, a blinding light emanating from a circular doorway not far in front of him. The light refracted and reflected on the crystal-like ice surface, transforming into a rainbow of colors.
Deluo darted through the door in a few swift steps and found himself inside a massive tower. He looked up, the cylindrical tower walls extended upwards without end, with two spiral staircases leading people to cloud-piercing heights. At intervals, there was a small window by the stairs, through which thick layers of ice were visible outside.
The sound of running water Deluo most wished to find emanated right from the center of this circular room. There, a small fountain continuously poured crystal-clear water into the pool below.
Deluo touched the water from the pool with his hand and scooped up a handful to taste. Although the temperature was somewhat chilly, it was unmistakably water. In the next instant, Lynch was thrust entirely into the pool.
Immediately, the pool released thick steam, and hot vapor surged towards Deluo. He quickly retreated a few steps, staring in surprise at the transformation happening in the pool.
"Deluo! Deluo, something’s wrong!" Nimo, lagging behind, stumbled and tumbled through the doorway, only to fall hard. He scrambled up, hastily turning back to shut the door behind him. However, the round wooden door had long been frozen solid, fused with the ice.
"Deluo, come and help!" Before Deluo could respond, a blinding beam struck the icy floor before Nimo, a fierce explosion erupting instantly, propelling the little dwarf and shards of ice into Deluo’s arms.
"Nimo! Are you alright? Who’s attacking you?" Deluo set down the dwarf dangling in his arms and grabbed a sharp icicle as a weapon— his longsword had long drifted downstream with the volcanic stones in the Molten River.
"It’s... it’s..." Nimo stuttered.
No effort was needed for Deluo to guess, as two figures emerged from the mist of ice stirred by the explosion, standing proudly before Deluo.
Two celestial beings, nearly four meters tall, spread their wings behind them, staring intensely down at the two below with their bright, topaz eyes. They possessed slightly bluish-white skin, golden armor that covered most of their bodies, and their backs emitted a white halo stemming from their unfolded wings.
Judging by their physique, the angels appeared to be a male and a female. The male angel wielded a massive, exaggerated longsword, with a blade nearly two meters long, ablaze with silver flames; the female angel gripped a longbow formed of blue light, its string drawn to its limit, ready to release a gilded arrow.
The male angel asked in a deep, resonant voice, "Is it these two?"
"It doesn’t seem like it, but the power we are pursuing manifested here," the female angel’s voice was mellifluous yet carried an undeniable authority.
"Who are you? Why did you burst in and attack us?" Deluo, holding the large icicle, stood resolutely in front of the two imposing angels, refusing to back down.
The two angels ignored him, continuing to scan the room.
Meanwhile, in that strange world, Lynch was also being scrutinized by a mysterious figure atop the slope. No matter how the mage focused his gaze, he couldn’t see the person’s face. And at this moment, the wall of fire continued to approach leisurely, its searing heat pressing towards the mage standing at the center.
Lynch couldn’t even approach the circle of fire, trapped in the center, unable to move a step. The mage instead relaxed, preparing to face the test of the flames.
Suddenly, it was as if the sky was rent open, a torrential downpour cascading down from the dome. The overwhelming force pressed the mage face-down into the grass. The circle of fire was extinguished in an instant, and even the steam rising from the intense heat was quickly washed away by the rain.
On the other hand, the water in Lynch’s pool suddenly boiled, emitting a thick mist that filled the room. The two angels watched the pool warily, as through the swirling vapor, a figure shakily stood up.
He gently shook the water from himself and stepped out of the pool. The two angels couldn’t discern his appearance, but where his eyes should have been, two black-purple lights blazed.
"It’s likely him..." the female angel whispered softly.
