Chapter 61: SOMEBODY LIED

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: EVERGREEN~ ECHO]

Kitanna paced back and forth inside her room; she had tried her best not to get into trouble during the day. Nix promised he would come see her if she acted right and she made sure she behaved just right.

During the day, she did all her work diligently, from attending to Almaria and Lady Deonisia, even when they made her clean water with her dress she did not complain. All this was because she wanted Nix to visit her. Kitanna tried to recollect her day’s events to know if she mistakenly got into trouble, maybe that was why Nix was not in her room yet.

Kitanna continued to move about restlessly in her room, then she stopped moving when she remembered something.

"Hold on! He asked me to bathe and eat in his quarters, does that mean I have to sleep there too?" She muttered to herself.

Without wasting much time, Kitanna moved to her closet, picked up a hooded gown, draped it over her slender shoulders, and made her way to the isolated quarters that belonged to Nix. It was already dark outside, so the palace passage was illuminated with candles at every pillar, with a guard standing on each post.

Kitanna, who did not want to get caught by anyone, as she was still in the second day of her being a maid, followed the other side of the palace where the guards sometimes did not bother to stand because of the roughness of the ground. Kitanna winced when she stepped on a sharp hard rock; she bit into her hands, trying to hold back the pain she was feeling.

The princess continued with her adventure; when she was almost close to the pathway that led to Nix’s quarters, she saw a shadow move from the corner of her eyes. Out of instinct, she pulled the small knife that was tied to her boot and rushed to hold the figure.

"Princess Kitanna!" The maid whispered in shock, trying to hold her balance steady because of the way the princess held her neck.

"And...you are?" Kitanna asked, not letting go of the person. Nobody was supposed to be outside the main palace at that hour, so if this person was breaking the rule, then the person was not to be trusted.

"I work in the main palace as a maid; I am Misam," Misam felt her heartbeat race with every second that passed.

Kitanna narrowed her eyes; she had never heard of the name before. "What are you doing here, by this time of the night? If you work in the main palace, you should know it’s prohibited," she asked, still not letting go of the maid, her grip tightening even.

Misam wheezed, trying to catch her breath with the tightened grip on her neck, "I...My mother was ill so I went to visit her; please spare me Princess Kitanna," the maid pleaded.

Kitanna loosened her grip; she moved back to get a better view of the maid. Then she shook her head; it was not really a familiar face, but she looked quite sincere, and her reason meant no harm. She bent down and placed the knife on her boots.

"If I find out you lied about tonight, I will not let it slide," Kitanna said, her voice turning cold, her gaze staring hard at the maid. The princess knew very well that nobody should be trusted within the palace walls, but she wanted to give the maid in front of her the benefit of doubt.

"My princess, I will never lie to you." Misam bowed politely then she raised her head, "This path is very dangerous at night. If you need something very important, let me know, and I’ll go get it," the maid said in a low voice.

Kitanna tilted her head; she opened her lips to say something when someone touched her back. She turned to look at the new person.

"Axilla?" Kitanna furrowed her brows. "W.."

"You forgot this," Axilla raised her hand to give the princess a box wrapped with white silk.

This action got Kitanna confused as to what Axilla was doing at this part of the palace late at night. She picked up the box that was given to her, and it was heavy.

When Axilla handed the box over to Kitanna, she turned to look at the maid,

"Greetings Misam," she bowed.

"Axilla, how are you?" Misam asked with a smile.

Kitanna rolled her eyes; she was not quite understanding the situation. She opened her mouth to speak, but again Axilla cut her short.

"Misam was the maid who helped me, one day when I was being bullied," Axilla said, bowing in gratitude.

"Don’t mind that; I will be taking my leave now. If the princess needs anything, do well to assist her," Misam patted Axilla’s shoulder before she turned to leave; she bowed to Kitanna.

"Please keep my secret," the maid said in a low voice, then she walked through the other side and entered the main palace.

Kitanna turned to look at Axilla, "Young lady, mind explaining yourself? How did you know I was not in my room, and what was that all about?" She asked, raising the box as if asking for an explanation for the box too.

"I heard the door to your room open, so I followed you," Axilla replied.

Kitanna narrowed her eyes, "Why?"

Axilla hesitated; she moved her face away from the princess.

"Speak," Kitanna asked impatiently.

Axilla fidgeted; she was not supposed to tell the princess. "T-the white Lord said I should not allow you go anywhere alone," she finally said in a low voice.

Kitanna let out a small laugh; it was alright, Nix was worried about her. But sending Axilla to watch her was very funny. Kitanna decided to let it slide; after all, she was on her way to meet Nix.

"That’s alright, but what’s with the box?" She asked, her eyes moving to look at the wrapped box.

Axilla smiled, still playing with her finger, her eyes glued to the ground. "I thought you should go with food, if you’re going to see the white Lord," she whispered.

Kitanna was stunned; she didn’t even think of going there with food. She smiled at the thoughtfulness of the young girl.

"Come here, you smart flower," she patted her hair gently, "Now go back to your room; don’t go about roaming the palace at night. I’m capable of handling myself. I told you, right? I’m not your regular princess," Kitanna said with a wink.

Axilla tucked her hair behind her ear and nodded. She did not want to leave the princess alone, but disobeying her words would be an issue. Axilla bowed and started walking back to the main palace.

Kitanna sighed when the young girl left; she didn’t expect to see anyone outside this part of the palace, late at night. She looked at the box of food she was carrying and remembered her reason for leaving her room in the first place. Kitanna made her way to Nix’s quarters.

She was almost close to his door when she saw someone leave the storeroom. Kitanna squinted her eyes to get a better view of the person.

"Bareea?" Kitanna muttered to herself; what was she doing there, she asked herself.

The maid, Bareea moved around to look through the windows when she noticed nobody was inside the house. She turned to leave but stopped abruptly when she noticed the princess was standing right in front of her.

"Princess Kitanna!" Bareea exclaimed; the princess was the least person she was expecting to see at that corner of the palace, and so late at night.

Kitanna sauntered to where the maid was standing with her head bowed. Each step created multiple questions in her head. Was this maid also laying with Nix? She scrunched her face at the thought of it.

"Bareea, when did you move from the position of a maid to a guard?" Kitanna asked, her words laced with sarcasm.

Bareea held her gown tightly; she had only wanted to see the royal guard who held her heart. She promised herself never to be touched by another man again but to keep herself for the blue-eyed guard. But when the king had requested to bed her, she was in no position to say no. Bareea felt bad about it, so she came to see Nix. She raised her face to look at the princess; Bareea couldn’t get herself to explain all these to her.

"I- I thought I saw something enter the window, maybe it was my eyes." Bareea lied. She bit her tongue; she felt very bad for lying to the princess.

"Were you sleepwalking?" Kitanna asked, her eyes filled with mirth. She turned to look at the distance between the isolated quarters and the section of the palace that was meant for maids. Bareea followed the trail of her eyes and understood the unspoken words the princess gave with her eyes.

"N-no, it’s just...." The maid didn’t complete her words; Kitanna waved her hand for her to stop talking.

"Just go back to your room," Kitanna said with her eyes closed tiredly. She had only come to see Nix; she didn’t expect these surprise encounters.

Bareea bowed gratefully and bolted out of the place; she was happy the princess didn’t ask her to explain over and over again.

Kitanna continued her walk entering the door; she turned to recollect the maids she met before getting to this point. Something did not feel right.

"Somebody lied," Kitanna muttered to herself; she shrugged her shoulders before opening the door.

As stepped inside, the room was very dark; Kitanna walked to where she remembered the candle stand was, she lighted the four candles, and the room became brighter.

"Ah!" Kitanna gasped when she turned her head.
