Chapter 60: BORN TO DIE

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: LOVED ME BACK TO LIFE ~ CÉLINE DION FEAT SIA]

"Deonisia?" Hieron moved his head to the side; the name sounded familiar, but he couldn’t remember where he heard it from.

"So, Almaria has been a plotting witch for a very long time. If Princess Kitanna is the king’s only child and the heir to the throne, why then did he continue the Black Rose era?" Clephas asked, looking at everyone in the room.

"Black Rose assassins?" Hieron asked; his face held a confused look. "It was abolished. Dunstan ended it in his own time. He wrote to me that his wife had a child, and it was a girl. He said he would not want to continue to train princesses to be assassins, so he abolished the era. If his daughter becomes an assassin, the throne will slip from his hand," Hieron replied.

Clephas used his hand to cover his mouth, "What in the conspiracy!" He couldn’t help but shout.

"It’s evident that Almaria wants to end the Morgair’s lineage. Princess Kitanna was groomed all her life to become an assassin; she was made to fight and kill for the crown. Almaria said it was the rule; she made it very believable because the high priestess attested to it. The moment her son was made king, there was a killing attempt on the princess’s life," Clephas said.

"We have to do something; that woman, whose origin we don’t know, has come to destroy Morado," Severus replied, his voice sounding distressed.

"We will have to hear what Kitanna’s husband has to say. He is the one to give the order," Hieron raised his face to look at Nix. Clephas and Severus were confused when they heard the word husband.

"White Lord, did the princess get married in my absence? Was it that man from the other kingdom who she was going to marry that night?" Clephas asked, his face greased with worry. He heard that the man who was arranged to marry Kitanna was a sick person.

Nix, who had been calm along, narrowed his eyes when his grandfather made mention of the word husband. He did not reply directly to the question Clephas was asking.

"The princess is not married," Nix said; this caused his grandfather to smirk.

"The conspiracies are too much; we have to find out why Almaria is doing this with her cousin sister. To do that, I need to get every piece of information I can from them, but the cousin sister seems like too much of a package," Nix said in a low voice.

Hieron cleared his throat, "Do you want me to come back?" He asked.

"Nothing I can’t handle," Nix replied, his stubborn grandfather bent on making sure he got married to Kitanna by all means possible.

"What is this news you said earlier, the princess is now a maid?" Clephas asked; he was just worried about the girl.

"It was a game of hungers that the royal family played; Almaria and her cousin tried to kill her in the woods. I was lucky to be there, so the poisoned arrow hit me by mistake," Nix could not continue because he heard a snickering sound from his grandfather.

Nix turned to look at the old man sternly; Hieron raised his hands in surrender. "Go ahead; I’m just wondering how many mistakes you’ve been making during this period," Hieron tried to stop his laughter.

Nix ignored the old man and continued, "The princess thought I was dying, so she gave up her position," he relayed the message to them.

Hieron said in a low voice meant for only Nix to hear, "When am I meeting my daughter-in-law?". Nix ignored the man.

Clephas and Severus, who were still in the same room, did not understand the conversation between Nix and his grandfather; they decided not to involve themselves.

"Lord Nix, what do you mean the princess thought you were dying? Was the arrow not poisoned?" Clephas asked; it was just a thought that had been bothering him.

"If it was poisoned, then there shouldn’t be a problem," Hieron said matter-of-factly.

Severus widened his eyes, "Don’t tell me it’s true. The legend about the blood of poison," he asked, looking at both grandson and grandfather who held no expression on their faces. Severus explained to Clephas about the blood of poison.

After the meeting, Severus left the room with Clephas, leaving Nix with his grandfather.

"I see you have a lot on your shoulder now, boy," Hieron spoke to his grandson in a soft tone.

"Hm," Nix hummed. It was not himself who he was worried about, but the princess.

When he arrived at the palace after training in the mountains for years, he was surprised to see that the princess was not the next in line for the throne as promised by the former king, and not only that, she was now a trained assassin. Nix was surprised at the turn of events; he decided to watch and see how everything turned out. He decided to make his move when he heard the princess was being married off.

That night an attempt was made on Kitanna’s life, he already made plans to save her. But the princess came to him by herself and asked for help; it helped him reduce the explanation he would have given if he had saved her life.

"When do you plan on telling her?" Hieron asked, breaking Nix away from his thoughts.

"That she is supposed to be the one on the throne?" Nix asked standing up from his seat ready to leave.

"That, and also about you." The older man heard the chair move; he picked up his stick and stood up.

"Soon. She’s a smart one; I’m sure she will figure it out soon," Nix replied.

Hieron smiled, "I see she’s already growing on you." The older man walked to touch his grandson.

"From now on, things will not get better. But you don’t hope on making things better; all you have to do is keep it together. Every day will become a rainy day in Kitanna’s life. That little one already has a tough life; she was just born to die. You are the only one who can keep her safe. Protect her with your life," Hieron pleaded.

Nix sighed; he knew very well that there was nobody from Kitanna’s direct family who was alive. The life she knew was just fake, and if she finds out it was going to break her to pieces.

"I will keep her safe; you should take care of yourself too, Lord Hieron," Nix said softly.

After exchanging greetings with his grandfather, Nix made his way to the entrance of the cave. Standing there was Clephas, who was also waiting for him.

"Lord Nix, please take care of the princess; I know she might come off to be too stubborn and with her bad jokes. But she is a very soft child," Clephas asked of Nix.

Nix nodded his head, "She will be glad she has a lot of persons who worry for her sake. Take care of yourself, Clephas." Nix turned and left the place.

He entered the water he walked in from, and once he got to his horse. He climbed on it and rode back to the palace.
