Chapter 219: FOOD IS THE BEST

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: ONE OF THESE NIGHTS ~ RED VELVET]

Axilla tried so much to shake off the memory of what happened in the bath but she couldn’t. It wasn’t for long, but she felt Cortez’s hands touch the bare skin of her chest, and this memory caused an erratic sensation to run down her spine, making her legs curl.

"I won’t survive this night if it continues like this," Axilla muttered under her breath. When she heard movement from the bath indicating that Cortez was done, she quickly packed her hair and disappeared from the room.

Cortez heard the door close, and he knew Axilla had left the room. He removed his wet clothes and changed into something better, after which he walked down to the dining table.

Axilla was on her way to the dining when she met with the host. It was Crown Prince Adric talking with his bride-to-be. The man turned when he noticed someone’s presence.

"I know you! From Morado, right? You came with Cortez, I never got to know your name." The crown prince stretched his hand forward to greet Axilla.

Axilla bowed politely, "I am Axilla, your highness." She replied, also greeting the crown princess with a bow.

The man nodded as if he just recalled something, "Yes, Axilla. You really changed Cortez, especially that night when you saw him in that room. Cortez was so worried about you; he even-"

"For a groom who is to be married tomorrow, you have quite some energy," Cortez joined them, stopping Adric from saying more than what he already said. The man’s lips were definitely leaking. Cortez sighed.

Adric grinned mischievously at his friend, "Alright, I won’t tell her; I’m glad you could make it. I need to hurry up with my wedding and get the crown princess pregnant so my child would be betrothed to the heir of Morado." The man chimed playfully.

Axilla and the crown princess blushed. How was this man openly speaking about such things to their hearing? No shame at all.

Cortez, who was used to his friend, started walking to the dining, "Give up already, Adric." He opened the door, stepping to the side he ushered Axilla in first, then the crown princess followed, before he could enter Adric pulled him back.

"Or you can make your move tonight on Axilla; let’s strengthen our friendship bonds with our children getting married," Adric advised.

"I should let the crown princess know she is making a bad choice; you’re a lost cause," Cortez remarked with a bored look.

Adric nudged his friend’s shoulder, "Cortez. Don’t tell me you haven’t had a taste?...I know that face, you haven’t - why? I mean, you used to be the wild one; what happened?"

Cortez rubbed his temples; he knew Adric very well, and the man wasn’t going to give up. "Axilla is different; I’m going to treat her the way she deserves. Like a precious gem." His voice sounded a little distant.

"I should give up my wedding for you tomorrow; I mean, I’m touched right now by your words. Cortez, you are in love! After Jenna, I thought you would perish without a woman beside you, but now look-"

Cortez didn’t wait for the man to complete his words; he pushed him inside the room.

With the sudden push, people were surprised to see the crown prince, so everybody stood to their feet to greet him.

Adric brushed off an invisible dust from his shoulder, and he waved to everyone, "Thank you; please enjoy your dinner." Giving Cortez one last grin, he walked to sit beside the Crown princess.

Cortez glared at the crown prince, checking out everyone at the table, he found Axilla sitting down comfortably before he could get to where she was, a man sat down on the space, and this caused his eyes to narrow at both the man and Axilla.

Axilla looked away immediately; it was not her fault that someone came to sit there before him. She picked up her spoon and started eating, trying to avoid Cortez’s intent gaze.

Cortez smirked when he noticed how the girl tried to focus on her meal; he walked to where she was and whispered something to the man that had occupied his position. The both of them smiled at each other and shook hands, and the man moved to another empty seat.

Axilla noticed how the man gave her a knowing look before changing his position, and she wondered what Cortez had told the man.

Cortez pulled his chair out and sat down comfortably, with his eyes now on Axilla, who tried so much to act unaffected by his presence.

Cortez leaned forward, like he was about to kiss Axilla, then he pulled away something from her eyelashes.

"Why do you keep running away from me?" He asked, his velvety voice low, meant only for Axilla to hear.

The girl felt her toes curl again; she pushed her hands on the table, trying to keep her expression plain, but it was a failed mission.

"You keep doing things in public; I don’t want people to misunderstand." She tried to beg him with her eyes.

Cortez moved back a little, giving her the space she needed, "I won’t do it in public then, but if run I’ll have no choice but to chase." He relaxed on his chair.

Axilla finally heaved a sigh of relief. At least she would eat her food with peace of mind.

As dinner progressed, Cortez noticed a man from opposite the table who kept looking at Axilla at intervals trying to get the girl’s attention.

It wasn’t just Cortez; soon, Axilla noticed the man’s eyes on her. And she tried to brush it off as a random look, but soon the man refused to move his eyes elsewhere as he kept on looking at Axilla. The next thing the man passed the best part of the chicken to Axilla’s plate, giving her a wink.

Axilla was shocked; she tried to compose herself, but getting attention from men was not something she could ever get used to. Before she could regain her composure, she felt Cortez’s hands on her leg. She tried to remind him of his promise, but then he started talking, loudly.

"Your highness," Cortez’s voice was heard as everyone in the room fell silent, giving their attention to the young merchant.

"What would you do if you find another man making dangerous moves towards your bride?" He asked; this time his hands were now moving up to Axilla’s thigh with his eyes on the man who had been trying to flirt with her.

Adric smiled, "I would order for the person’s head to be removed from his body immediately." The crown prince replied with a smile still etched on his lips like taking a person’s life was nothing to him.

Cortez nodded in agreement, "I would gauge the person’s eyes out with the spoon he uses to eat, then I will feed it to him." He relayed the threat calmly, and the man who had his eyes on Axilla understood it without being told; he turned his gaze elsewhere out of fear.

Axilla felt her whole body shut down when she felt Cortez’s hands gently move up, making her aware of his presence; she subtly moved her hands down to stop him, but that was her worst mistake because the next moment Cortez’s hands shifted close to her inner thighs, very close to her middle, and being a girl that had never experienced such, Axilla gasped loudly.

"Ah..!"

Everyone at the table turned to look at the girl, except Cortez who continued to eat his food like nothing happened.

"Axilla is everything okay? Do you not like the food?" Adric asked the girl worriedly.

Axilla, whose face had already turned red, gulped a large quantity of water from her cup, and she said, "I like the food; it’s the best."

Cortez nodded in agreement, "Food is always the best."
