Chapter 207: A TICKET OUT
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: HOME ~ SUIN]
It was morning, but Kitanna didn’t feel like standing up, not because of what Nix told her the other night but because she was feeling sick and tired.
Finally, she let go of the alluring clutches of her bed and stepped into the warm bath that had been made ready for her.
"A good day," Kitanna murmured, basking in the pleasures of the water and the flowery scent of the candles. She relaxed, with her head thrown back in thought. The conversation she had with Nix finally replayed in her mind, and she wondered if her fate with Nix was such an ill one that they always escaped a problem just to enter another one.
Kitanna mindlessly brushed her hand on her stomach, "Your father and I would protect you, and I will be there for you," she said in a small voice.
After having her bath, Kitanna walked to the dining so she could join others at the table for breakfast, and she expected Nix to be there since he wasn’t on the bed when she woke up.
"Good morning, Queen Kitanna," Larel bowed when Kitanna stepped inside the room, sitting beside her was Labre who was trying to scoop rice to his spoon.
"Labre, greet the Queen," Larel called the boy’s attention.
Kitanna smiled, "Let him eat, how are you doing this morning, Lady Larel?" she asked going to take her position on the chair when she noticed Nix was absent from the table. She furrowed her brows.
"Doing great, I’ve really missed the palace air," Laurel remarked, helping Labre to get a moderate spoonful of rice which he could eat comfortably. She had wanted to feed the boy, but he wanted to do it himself.
"Lady Hash and Lord Hieron didn’t come out for breakfast?" Kitanna asked, picking out bread and spreading butter generously on it.
Larel chuckled softly, "I heard Lord Hieron had asked that his own breakfast with Lady Hash should be outside so they can enjoy nature. According to him, ’With age comes a longing to embrace nature,’" the young woman said with a smile, her eyes watching Labre attentively, making sure he didn’t put anything else in his mouth which wasn’t edible.
Kitanna continued her breakfast silently; she was glad everyone was okay and they weren’t bothered about anything. But she wondered where Nix might have gone to; was he still feeling down about the curse? She couldn’t help but wonder.
"If you’re looking for the King, I saw him going to the dungeon where Deonisia was held," Larel said, noticing how many times Kitanna had sighed since she started eating.
Kitanna, happy with the information, smiled before stepping out of the room in search of her husband.
Nix was standing in front of Deonisia, who was not ready to say anything to him.
"Which kingdom killed my father? Where are they now?" Nix asked in a calm voice.
Deonisia scoffed, "Like I would ever tell you that." The woman replied, throwing her face to the other side.
Nix nodded, "I wasn’t expecting you to; either way, you will pay for your crimes with your life." He replied, turning to see who was joining them as the door to the prison opened.
"Kit?" He called.
Kitanna walked to stand beside him, "I didn’t see you during breakfast, so I was worried." She said, holding Nix’s hand.
"Oh, what a great painting you both make," Deonisia scowled, "You think you are righteous and people like us are the evil ones? Acting all saintly like you haven’t taken lives yourself," the woman pointed accusing fingers at the couple.
Kitanna opened her mouth to reply, "We didn’t take lives just for fun; we did it to protect those we love."
Panha hit the iron bar that caged her out of anger, "Then release me, let me kill you!! For killing my sister. My harmless sister, who did nothing to you," she shouted in anger.
Kitanna tilted her head, she never killed any young child even as an assassin. She turned to look at Nix before she asked.
"Your sister? Who is your sister?"
"You don’t even remember her; does the name Calissa ring a bell?" Panga asked through her teeth.
Kitanna stood there looking confused for a moment; she didn’t remember any Ca-
’It’s Calissa, my name is Calissa,’ the words of the maiden whom she had seen Khelan with in a small room long ago rang in her memory. She turned to look at Panha in realization; why had she not noticed they both had a striking resemblance to each other.
"Oh, you both were really cut out from the same piece. I guess blood never lies," Kitanna replied, not regretting one bit what she did to Panha’s sister.
Panha fumed, "Now you remember her, yes? What did my sister ever do to you?" The young woman screamed.
"Pelican relax; this doesn’t look like you’re avenging your sister because if that’s the case, you’re just stupid." Kitanna replied,
"W--what do you mean?" Panha asked in a small voice.
"Did you not know your sister was also an assassin; she killed a helpless widow who did nothing to her, just because she wanted to hide her identity. And she was on her way to kill Khelan and myself next, so like I said, I protected my family," Kitanna said, her words clearly for Panha to hear.
"You claim everything you did was for revenge? Or was that my guts made you angry?" The queen asked.
Panha screamed, dragging her hair out of anger. She wished she could run out of the cell and strangle Kitanna because indeed, she hated her guts.
"Let’s leave them; this place is not healthy for you and the child." Nix said in low voice, tugging Kitanna for them to leave the dungeon because everyone inside was already angry as it is and there was no escape again for them.
"You all should enjoy here and start paying rent soon, no matter where you go in life, you will always end up here. Where you belong," Kitanna told the four women who were held, Panha, Deonisia, Misam, and lastly Lucía. She shook her head and started leaving the dungeon when a weak voice said.
"Please, let me out of here. I can do anything....I know how to cure anything, I can work with herbs well and you know it," Misam said weakly; she couldn’t get herself to stay in here another night. She was already losing it.
Nix and Kitanna passed each other a look, "We can’t trust her," Nix said, reading Kitanna’s thoughts.
"We will never know if we don’t try," the young queen said to her husband with a smile, then she turned to Misam,
"Anything you say?" And when Misam nodded, Kitanna grinned.
"You might have just gotten your ticket out of here."
