Chapter 206: BEAUTY OF THE NIGHT

[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: CONFESS TO YOU ~ LIM KIM]

Axilla sat outside her room, hands placed on her side, gazing upon the night sky. All day she had been waiting for a reply from the palace, but none came. It worried her that Lady Hash did not arrive safely or things were not well back at the palace. These thoughts kept her worried and awake, so she sat outside alone in the dark.

"Axilla?" The young girl turned when she heard Cortez’s voice from behind.

"Chief Cortez," Axilla stood up and bowed respectfully, despite knowing how the man felt about her; it didn’t change their status. He was someone above her class, and she had to respect that no matter how playful he appeared.

"You couldn’t sleep? Do you still need me to stay beside you at night?" Cortez teased the young girl.

Axilla waved her hand shyly, "It was just a one-time occurrence, Young Master. I can sleep perfectly on my own now." She replied, blushing at the straightforward words of Cortez.

Cortez sucked his teeth as if disappointed, "That’s sad, I didn’t make much impact right? We should change that tonight." He grinned.

Axilla crossed her hands on her chest defensively, "What? No! I’m not ready!" She shouted, biting her lower lip.

"Ready for what? Look at that, our bright flower’s mind is not so innocent. What were you thinking of doing to me again?" Cortez chimed playfully, sauntering to close the distance between them.

Axilla gulped, "I—I wasn’t thinking anything. You always put thoughts in my head." She muttered in a low voice.

Cortez clapped his hands excitedly, "I do? Well then, one of these days I should really make you live them. Yes?"

Axilla shook her head; there was no winning when it came to Cortez. He was the king when it comes to twisting words, and the more she tried to defend herself, the more she found herself saying another thing. All she had to do was stop talking.

"Quiet? I love listening to your voice." Cortez said, this time there was no smile on his face. He meant it.

Axilla played with her dress, kicking the air mindlessly at the comment made on her voice. She never knew anyone would love her voice; it made her wonder what they sounded like, and she blushed.

"You were hanging out alone, that’s boring. Should I make your night great?" Cortez asked, dipping his hand inside his trouser pocket.

Axilla pressed her lips, "Mm... I don’t know, I was just—" she stammered as she was unsure what the young master meant.

Cortez snapped his fingers, cutting the girl’s words. "Don’t worry, you won’t regret it, and I wouldn’t do anything you don’t like. Here." He stretched his hand forward for the girl to hold.

Axilla gave it a thought for some time before placing her small hands for Cortez to hold.

"Let me show you the beauty the night holds that we fail to see." Cortez tugged the girl’s hand as they walked away from the inn, further into the village where they stopped at an open store.

The seller, who had grilled meat and drinks in front of his store, rushed out to attend to his customers. "Greetings Chief Cortez, and Milady," the man bowed, ready to make big sales because of the reputation of the merchant that came to buy from him.

"Let’s have the tender part of the pork in smaller pieces. My bright flower here can’t chew it if it’s too big. That would be changed soon, by the way." Cortez started talking about a totally different thing, but his attention was called back when Axilla nudged him.

"Oh, and your best wine. Let’s see...something with little or no alcohol that has any fruit a woman would love; she loves fruit." Cortez completed his order.

Axilla felt a part of her heart warm with the way Cortez took into consideration everything she liked; it made her knees weaken.

"Here is your order." The seller wrapped everything packaged in a yellow silk, he handed it over to Cortez.

Cortez threw two gold coins to the seller, "Continue with your good work." He smiled before leaving the store with Axilla.

When the seller saw the two gold coins, he continued to bow in gratitude as he blessed Cortez. "May you live long with great wealth, Chief Cortez." The man bowed deeply; the two gold coins were worth more than what he would sell in one week.

Cortez and Axilla finally got to the most deserted part of the village, covered with mostly trees that acted as a guard for the fresh spring.

"Wow, look at that," Axilla pointed at the lanterns that floated in the small stream. It made the whole place beautiful as the lanterns were made of different colored papers.

Cortez smiled when he noticed the girl was already enjoying the view; he got the best spot for them and arranged the meat and wine on the ground.

"Now the night begins," he ushered Axilla to sit, while he picked a position beside her.

"This place is so beautiful," Axilla’s eyes sparkled at the sight in front of her, with the lanterns floating, the sound of the spring filling the forest, with fireflies chirping in the dark. It made a beautiful sound that calmed the soul.

"The villagers light those whenever they want to pray for a lost soul or wish for something," Cortez narrated, picking a small stick he collected the small chunks of pork and gave them to Axilla.

Axilla felt the juicy taste of the peppered meat crush in her mouth; it felt so nice, and she liked it. "So good," she muttered.

"I know," Cortez nodded, pushing the meat closer to Axilla so she could take more.

"What about you, do you light the lanterns too?" Axilla asked after chewing a mouthful of the meat.

Cortez relaxed, stretching his legs with one on top of the other while using his hands to balance himself. "I love to watch them. At night it feels as if the people’s prayers make beautiful whispers as they float... if you listen, you can hear them."

Axilla tried to listen, her eyes looking at Cortez. She didn’t know he had this side of him, and she was glad she got to know him better instead of judging him as someone bad. "They make beautiful sounds," Axilla muttered.

Cortez nodded his head, enjoying the natural scenery with the natural air blowing in the dark. "Do you hate people that smoke so much?" He asked out of the blues.

Axilla knew he was asking because of himself, "I used to."

"What about now?" Cortez wanted to understand the girl better.

Axilla hummed, "You made my perspective about them change. I mean, I used to write off smokers as people who are evil, but then I realized that it is not always the case," the girl replied.

Cortez smiled at her response; it was a remarkable improvement. "Tomorrow I will take you to the tailor’s, to measure the dress for Adric’s wedding."

"Thank you," Axilla bowed again; she felt bad that she was the only one always receiving, and she never gave the young master in return. Feeling bad about it, Axilla leaned forward and dropped a small kiss on Cortez’s cheek before moving back, her cheeks painted with soft blush colors.

Cortez startled at the girl’s reaction, didn’t stop looking at her. He didn’t expect her to be forward with the kiss, knowing how shy she was.

Axilla refused to meet the prying gaze of Cortez, she tried to look anywhere else in the vast forest, when she bit her lips mindlessly.

Cortez narrowed his eyes at this action, then he muttered, "You shouldn’t have done that,"

Axilla thinking the young master was not happy with the kiss, turned to apologize. "I’m sor—" her words were cut short when she felt the warm lips of Cortez on her own.

It was a different feeling from the time she was drunk, a different feeling from the time Cortez tried to feed her antidote. It was a passion-filled kiss.

Axilla, whose heart was beating like crazy, closed her eyes, as her tiny hands reached forward to grab Cortez’s shirt.

This action drove Cortez to the edge as he pushed his tongue deeper, sucking that of Axilla. He made sure he conquered every part of her lips, while rubbing his tongue on hers, biting her small tender lips.

Axilla tightened her grip on Cortez’s shirt, but he didn’t mind; he aimed at leaving the girl breathless.

As the two lovebirds kissed late in the night in the presence of nature, the stars flashed in the dark sky like they were cheering them up.
