Chapter 121: WHAT HAPPENED TO LADY AGGIE
[MUSIC RECOMMENDATION: WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY? SEVEN SISTERS SOUNDTRACK]
Misam stepped back when she felt Nix’s words being directed at her. She gulped nervously. Out of all her years of living disguised within the palace walls, she had never been scared until now. The man in front of her was nowhere joking about the question he just asked her, and she knew better than to waste time. However, confessing to her crimes, especially taking a life, was not something people willingly did.
Nix gazed at the young woman who wasn’t willing to talk. He pushed the cell door open, walking casually to where Misam was chained. She turned her head to see what Nix was about to do, terror and shivers running down her spine.
Misam trembled in fear as the blue-eyed man glanced at her, as if in deep thought. His blue icy gaze made streaks of sweat fall on the side of her face. She wanted to escape from this prison. The man in front of her looked crazier and deadlier than the princess. Never be too quick to ascertain that people are normal, Misam made a mental note. She used to think the princess was the crazy one, turned out the guard who never spoke to anyone and always acted composed was even the one to be feared the most.
"Nix, you can’t torture the words out of her! It was abolished years ago," Khelan yelled from his cell room when he saw Nix trying to retrieve something from his pocket.
Nix stopped momentarily, his hands still in his pocket. He raised his face to look at Khelan, his expression still bored and calm. After a few seconds, he finally said to Khelan, "What makes you think I was going to torture her? And the law was abolished because your forebearers thought the world was free from evil. They didn’t know people like your mother and her were still lurking in the shadows. Pretending to be humans, dressing like them while they brew evil."
Nix continued what he was doing, retrieving a small bag from his pocket, ever so slowly untied it, revealing the contents. He resumed talking, "In Wahels, we torture people in a way that they even wish death to come quicker, but it shouldn’t be given that easily. Don’t you agree with me? This woman has blood on her hands. Do you know what it means to take a life?"
Misam bit her lips, "Lady Aggie betrayed us first. She agreed to the consequences her actions would bear if she ever tried to speak up. She should also be blamed for defaulting." She tried to justify her actions.
Nix hummed as if agreeing with her for a moment, then he crushed the seeds that he took out from the bag. Waving for the guard outside to step inside, Nix handed over the contents to the guard.
"Feed our guest a generous amount of this," he ordered in a calm but dangerous voice.
"What? You want to poison her?!" Khelan blared from his cell.
Nix turned and shrugged his shoulder, "You said I shouldn’t torture her, even though her heinous crimes precede her. Now I’m feeding her with a healthy seed, and you’re worried. Tell me, Khelan, are you also interested in her?" He jerked his head towards Misam, who was now struggling not to swallow the contents being forced down her throat.
Khelan was shocked to hear Nix speak and even call him by name in such a manner, "How dare you! I didn’t know you’ve been disguising, waiting to show your true color. You now talk to me like we are equals when you’re just a mere guard."
Nix twitched his lips, his eyes filled with mirth. "A mere guard with a true origin. I am blood of Zeno; once you get yours in check, we continue this conversation. For now, it’s baseless," Leaving Khelan gobsmacked, Nix faced Misam.
"Relax, the herb will only help you remember the crimes you wish to forget. Enjoy." He grinned, for the very first time.
Slowly, Misam started feeling dizzy, her head becoming muddy. She began muttering to herself, and as time passed, it became louder.
Misam’s memory traveled back to that very day. It all started when she noticed the princess had started to take some strange potions. She took some particles of it, to test it by pretending to wash off the cups, and then she found out that it was a potion for getting back her memory.
Misam started by swapping the herbal drink. Instead of feeding the princess with the real one, she gave her a potion that would cause Kitanna to see things that weren’t real. That very night, Kitanna was on her way to meet Nix.
Misam hid at the place which was not usually used by others because of the rocky path.
’Princess Kitanna!’ Misam remembered screaming out in shock when she felt the princess hold her neck. She had been hiding perfectly; she didn’t know Kitanna saw her.
’And...you are?’ When the princess asked her that question, Misam clenched her teeth in anger. The little twerp didn’t even know her after serving for many long years within the palace. She tried to compose her expression even though her neck was being wriggled. If she attempted to attack the princess at the moment, it might blow her cover. Misam decided to play along.
’I work in the main palace as a maid; I am Misam.’
But the princess didn’t seem to believe her; she still had doubts about what a maid was doing outside at that time of the night. Misam lied and said she went to visit her sick mother.
’If I find out you lied about tonight, I will not let it slide,’ those were Kitanna’s words to her before she left the place.
Misam scoffed, touching her neck where the princess had her grip earlier. She wanted to run and stab the girl for even daring to look down on her, but she decided to wait for the perfect opportunity, and it came knocking on her door the next morning.
She was passing by the kitchen when she saw the now dead head maid, Lady Aggie, whispering something to Kitanna. And from the look of things, the woman was trembling.
"Rat!" Misam sneered peering through the open creak from the door. She walked back and reported to Deonisia who had asked her to handle it without messing up.
Misam went back to where the maids were preparing for their morning, and she announced, "The head maid is in the kitchen, and she is waiting for us." Quickly, the maids rushed to the kitchen, and as Bareea and Axilla wanted to join them, Misam stopped them.
"You both can take your time; it was a prank," she smiled, gesturing to the unsuspecting two.
Misam followed the other maids, joining them in the kitchen. And as expected, Lady Aggie walked out of the kitchen. She smiled internally as she spoke to Kitanna, picking the cheese knife she used.
Misam hid it in her dress before the princess left the kitchen; she heard her talk to Bareea. A very perfect suspect. Misam grinned.
She left as soon as the princess walked out of the kitchen; Misam went to a random maid, gave her a paper to hand overto Axilla. It was better for her own face not to be shown. Misam drew the plan in her head to remove herself as a suspect. When she saw the head maid, going back to the kitchen, she followed the woman but stopped in her tracks because Bareea entered the kitchen.
Misam pretended to clean the area; that was when she heard Bareea arguing with the head maid. She moved closer to hear what was being said.
"You have been slacking off! I’ve advised you to keep your body until you get married." The older woman’s voice echoed.
Bareea scoffed, "Don’t ever stop me to tell me what to do with my life!"
Misam noticed someone had heard both of them argue, another good plan. She pretended to be engrossed in her cleaning when Bareea stomped out of the kitchen. Her initial plan had been to kill Lady Aggie after Axilla called the woman inside the kitchen so all fingers would point at her. But since Bareea joined in the chain, it was even more perfect.
As soon as Bareea left the kitchen, Misam stepped inside, not giving the older woman a chance to talk. She thrust the knife twice inside her and swiftly rushed out of the kitchen, avoiding contact with anyone. She went to wash her hands.
She stood to the side, checking if anyone would enter the kitchen, and unluckily for Axilla, she was the first to enter the kitchen. Misam was expecting the young girl to scream, but nothing was heard. When she took another step, Bareea entered the kitchen, yet they didn’t shout.
What if the head maid didn’t die properly? The thought haunted her mind. She risked herself by going back inside the kitchen. There she met Axilla holding the woman, trying to apply pressure to the wound.
’She can make it if we try,’ the young girl had said innocently.
Misam had to pretend like she was worried, but deep down she couldn’t allow the woman to step out alive. She then said to Bareea, ’I heard digging deep the knife would help sustain the injury, why don’t you push the knife in.’ She knew very well that Bareea was dumb.
Bareea looked at her skeptically for some time before she proceeded to push the knife inside the woman’s stomach.
’She stopped breathing,’ Axilla whispered in fear and shock.
Misam tried to hide her smile, but when she was about to say something, another maid shouted at the door.
That was how she was caught in the mess of being a suspect.
