Chapter 97: Chapter 93 Battle of North Lake
Shana’s first chain reaction was to nearly scare Stone, who was watching the video, into peeing himself. He was intently observing something on the table through the video, when suddenly there was a scream, the footage wildly shaking, continuing to shake, continuing to scream. Since misery loves company, Stone decisively unplugged his headset, and Shana’s scream instantly spread throughout the entire base.
Of course, Stone wasn’t that mean, but he unplugged it because Shana’s voice was too piercing, and he did it to protect his ears. You must know, Shana had a voice that could gather zombies under the cliff.
The second chain reaction, naturally, was the nearby zombies gathering together. At this moment, Lin Wu was scavenging cars, and the car’s sound insulation was rather good. Plus, with the door between them, Lin Wu didn’t hear anything. Moreover, Lin Wu had quite a haul— he got himself a small heater. The small heater was a plugin, only installable in small rooms, capable of raising the temperature by 10 degrees.
Satisfied, Lin Wu pushed open the car door and got out. Only then did he not understand why the nearby zombies were all heading toward the management office. It didn’t matter because Lin Wu saw Frenzy, charged at it, and began a slicing spree. Using the advantage of the zombies not being gathered, he hit his mark every time with the beast trap. But sometimes when you constantly walk by the river, you’re bound to get your feet wet. After all, he was using his bare hands to touch the zombies’ heads, and he did get scratched.
Glancing at the system panel, it wasn’t even a light injury, let alone infection? What’s infection? Does that even exist? Patting the medicine in his backpack, Lin Wu stood on the hood of the car and said to the zombies, "I just want to say, all of you walking away are trash."
"Poke from the front."
"Poke from the side."
"Poke from behind."
"You... what are you looking at, you there, come here." Lin Wu pointed at the last standing zombie, the Screeching Zombie.
The Screeching Zombie came over, its head drooping. Lin Wu was already in front of it, he jabbed the Screeching Zombie’s body once with a small dagger, interrupting its screeching spellcasting. The Screeching Zombie stood up straight again, head drooping as it prepared to look up and howl, but Lin Wu stabbed it once more. Over and over, the repeated stabbing made the Screeching Zombie twist its frail neck, causing its tattered head to swing up and down.
Shana, who had cleaned up, was sitting against the wall by the management office door, watching the fight a few meters below. She didn’t feel like speaking right now, not because Lin Wu was being childish— after all, she had a deep understanding of Lin Wu’s occasional silliness. Her mental state wasn’t good because she had been quite scared just now. She didn’t want to do anything; just wanted to sit dazedly in silence.
"Alright now?" Lin Wu saw Shana and, with a beast trap in his left hand, sent his playmate to the great beyond.
"Mhm."
Lin Wu hopped onto the platform over a meter high, glanced at Shana, who sat still and didn’t even look at him. Feeling somewhat guilty, he then explained his actions, "I saw you weren’t finished, so I played around a bit more."
"Mhm." Shana said, "There’s a safe inside."
With a puzzled look, Lin Wu entered the room and saw the safe. Strictly speaking, it wasn’t a safe but a weapons locker. He hadn’t eaten pork before, but he had seen pigs in magazines. After inspecting the lock, Lin Wu found that the locker hadn’t been opened by anyone, which meant it probably contained a gun.
Why would there be a gun in the management office? Oh right, this is Forest Park. Does that mean there really are wild animals? Lin Wu thought about the animals, his skills, and equipment, and felt he could take them on. So he focused on picking the lock.
The difficulty of picking a gun locker was very high. Despite the difficulty, lock picking was quite a fun job. Lin Wu focused, and after breaking seven lock picks, he finally opened the gun locker.
A box of 25 nine-millimeter pistol bullets, an ammunition pouch, and a shotgun. Not very good, it was a break-action shotgun, also known as a sawed-off shotgun. As the name implies, to load it, you had to break down the barrel, insert two rounds of ammo, and then fold it back to fire.
The sawed-off shotgun had a single bullet’s stopping power that surpassed the Raider’s, but its effective range was only 10 meters, making it suitable for taking down Frenzy but less suitable for defending the base compared to a revolver. The range of the sawed-off shotgun Lin Wu had gotten before wasn’t far either, but that didn’t mean the shotgun’s range was short. Magazines stated that the range for a hunting shotgun could reach 40 meters.
As Lin Wu came out, Shana also stood up, leaning against the wall. Seeing Shana silent, Lin Wu asked, "Are you okay?"
"It’s nothing."
Lin Wu questioned, "Saw an ex-boyfriend?"
Upon hearing this, Shana, who was listless, suddenly filled with vitality, bitterly said, "Your ex-boyfriend is that ugly..."
"Oh?" Lin Wu didn’t understand; it seemed she had encountered someone, so he asked, "Got kissed?"
"What?"
Lin Wu said, "Don’t girls in movies get kissed until they go weak all over?"
Shana gave Lin Wu a speechless look, "I’ll give you another chance, guess properly."
Lin Wu thought for a while, "I won’t guess, let’s go."
This truly frustrated Shana. Her spirits had been riled up, and now he was letting it go without guessing?
Shana revealed the answer, "It was a zombie."
Lin Wu stopped in his tracks, turned back, and asked, "Zombie?"
"Mhm."
"A regular zombie?"
"Mhm."
Lin Wu looked around, "There are lots of regular zombies around here."
Shana was on the verge of tears, "It was hiding under the table and suddenly grabbed my ankle."
Lin Wu finally understood and scornfully said, "How can you be so easily scared?"
"Haven’t you ever been scared?"
"Frequently," replied Lin Wu. "Now when I enter a building, I can pretty much guess where the zombies are hiding. Hm? I know, you peed your pants?"
