Chapter 96: Chapter 92 Survivor_2
Snow Egg: "I added to my Physical Strength, but I haven’t seen any guns getting beefier."
Little Knife: "I added to my Will, but I haven’t seen the guns getting any tougher."
Shana said with a hand to her forehead: "Some diseases are contagious."
Maya was a Doer. She had everyone shoot zombies twenty meters away without aiming for headshots. Once the shooting distance increased, the difference between those with strength and those without became pronounced. Horse Soul fired continuously for five seconds, punching a dozen holes in a zombie. Lin Wu fired continuously for five seconds and only managed to make two holes. When everyone took their turn, the results were consistent with what Maya had said: without enough strength to stabilize the gun, accuracy was abysmal.
The Raider wasn’t suitable for those who hadn’t improved their strength. It could be used, but its true potential couldn’t be realized.
Because of their reckless gunplay, a small horde of about a dozen zombies came knocking. Maya knelt on one knee, aimed, and fired. As bullets poured out, zombie plasma flew chaotically at a distance of over ten meters. In eight seconds, all fourteen zombies were dead. In those eight seconds, Maya had fired a total of 55 bullets.
Maya assessed herself: "I aimed for above the ribs, and about 30 bullets hit the target."
At that moment, Stone also realized that Maya and Lin Wu were cut from the same cloth. If he didn’t speak up, she could lead everyone in shooting practice all day. This wasn’t the Silencer’s role; this was the Raider’s.
"Stop!" That’s when Stone first felt Maya’s disapproval: "Time for a break, fellas."
Lin Wu led the protest: "We want to shoot guns, we..."
Stone gave Little Knife a knowing look. Little Knife got the hint, stepped forward, grabbed Lin Wu by the collar, and dragged him away. With Lin Wu no longer causing trouble, Stone began to rationalize with everyone, including Maya. Eventually, she agreed to store the Raider and promised to only take it out for base defense.
Having determined that the Raider wasn’t a fit for him, Lin Wu actually lost interest in the Raider. At a height of 1.7 meters, he was destined not to be a professional basketball center. Besides, those who liked to play would always find new toys. Why covet a toy that wasn’t right for you?
...
At the morning meeting, Maya announced that the scavenging work around the mountaintop base was concluded, and the next step was to extend the scavenging zone to the Wilderness Farm. Night shift members Lin Wu and Shana would go to the Sentry Card Substation, using it as a center to scavenge for valuable resources in the surrounding area.
There was a large Forest Park near the Sentry Card Substation, filled with human relics, a small park police station, vacation rental houses, RV campgrounds, and more.
To the west side of the park, close to the highway, was a small supermarket with an open-air parking lot housing about a dozen cars. The doors and trunks could be pried open with pry bars newly made by Su Shi.
Near the Sentry Card Substation was a small hydroelectric power station that likely also contained some supplies. Moreover, a gravel road to the east of the power station wound up the forested hillside. Although it was unclear where the road led, it was believed that following it might reveal some human structures.
The main reason Night Shift was sent to the outpost was the extremely scattered nature of nearby resources, which were also minor. For example, tents set up haphazardly by tourists, or a lonely fishing store by the lake. Additionally, there were vending machines, emergency park phone booths, food trucks, and souvenir shops scattered around.
This type of location lacked a clear objective. Should people go in groups or individually? Grouping up might lead to getting lost, but it was a waste of manpower for four people to search one tent.
Another reason was Lin Wu’s casual nature. Lin Wu working the day shift would feel constrained by the work content and quickly become bored, leading to slacking off. It was better to give Lin Wu an open world to play around in. With a desire to explore the unknown, Lin Wu’s work enthusiasm would soar exponentially.
But Lin Wu wasn’t entirely to blame. For instance, dismantling work in the apartments was only about tearing down and transporting—having a little more or a little less debris was utterly uninspiring. An open world was different; rummaging through a tent might yield a zombie or a gun, perhaps a diary or even a pile of poop.
Reason number "N" was that this was Forest Park. What’s referred to as a forest park meant that there were man-made roads and buildings within a forest. Besides, there might even be wildlife. Theoretically, as a Hunter, the chances of survival when facing wild animals would be higher.
The final reason was that Shana enjoyed managing tasks. She could take care of the work that Lin Wu didn’t like.
The reality was just like that. As soon as the morning meeting ended, Shana began gathering information about the park layout, the area it covered, and the road systems within it. To Lin Wu, these preparations seemed pointless—once they arrived, they simply needed to walk towards whatever direction they felt like.
...
Today, Lin Wu was driving. As the designated driver for the thousand-kilometer journey, Lin Wu was doing quite well; getting a hang of the ancient car was a matter of minutes. He was driving the Overlord, mainly because the pickup was manual. Shana agreed to let Lin Wu drive as a way to butter him up, hoping to gain more say in planning their scavenging route later on. Little did she anticipate that Lin Wu would get hooked the moment he took the wheel.
The Overlord not only had powerful control capabilities, but its off-road performance was spectacular too. Barely three minutes after departure, Lin Wu had already driven through a highway barrier and ventured into the wilderness. Refusing to lose face, he wouldn’t admit that he oversteered while dodging a zombie and thus went off the road, instead he confidently told Shana, "An off-road vehicle needs this kind of terrain to be really enjoyable."
For a moment, Shana couldn’t tell if he was being serious or not.
Navigating through the Sentry Card was a test of skill, and after scraping by four times, Lin Wu managed to drive past the checkpoint, stubbornly boasting, "Impressive, right? Scraped four times and only lost 5% of its durability."
Shana, knowing the truth, just wanted some peace and quiet.
Fortunately, Lin Wu was aware of his crude driving skills. He was extra careful throughout the journey, reducing speed, and ultimately arrived safely at the outpost. He thought to himself, if anything else went wrong, he really couldn’t cover it up.
The outpost’s power station was a simple structure, a concrete shack of about fifteen square meters, with an iron door. Inside, there were a few machines operating with lights on.
The safety radius of the outpost was only seven meters, but its function had nothing to do with its safety zone. After stocking up at the outpost’s warehouse with Stone’s remote approval, Shana clipped her phone in her upper pocket with the camera showing, muted the other party, and moved to the edge of the safety zone with Lin Wu.
Lin Wu looked around for a while; it was pitch dark, not even street lamps. He turned to Shana, "Where’s the route you planned?"
With tears welling up, Shana realized that she, used to well-lit conditions, had forgotten that they were working in the dark tonight. She replied, playing it off, "Tonight, I’m planning to see if your on-the-spot adaptability is really as strong as you say."
"Let’s go." Since it had come to this, they may as well die trying.
...
The moonlight was decent tonight. After crouching in the darkness for a while, they grew accustomed to it. They couldn’t see very clearly, but they could make out silhouettes—the contours of zombies and buildings. They followed the highway for a hundred meters and then entered the Forest Park through a three-meter-wide concrete path. As for the Overlord, there was no need to worry—upgraded cars had powerful anti-theft capabilities. Of course, there was always the chance that someone might not succeed in stealing the car and decide to smash it instead.
This was the southern entrance to the Forest Park. Below the steps was the park’s administration office and a small parking lot with a compact car.
The administration office was just a single room. Lin Wu asked, "Are you brave enough?"
Shana replied, "It’s just one room, isn’t it?"
Lin Wu nodded, "Then I’ll break into the car." There was no point in wasting manpower and time.
He took the crowbar handed over by Shana, and thanks to prior practice, he effortlessly pried open the car door. Lin Wu didn’t rush to get in; he prodded inside the car with the crowbar a few times before climbing in. Shana, who watched everything, nearly burst out laughing—it turned out he was scared too.
Shana opened the door of the administration office. She didn’t rush to push it all the way open but shone her phone light around first to confirm there were no zombies before entering and promptly closing the door behind her. Now that was a pro move—something Lin Wu, this reckless brute, would never understand!
The office had a bed, a desk, and a long, embedded safe. Shana wasn’t in a hurry. Emulating Lin Wu, she went to the desk and used her phone’s light to check the items on it since it was a likely place for clues.
Suddenly, a hand reached out from under the desk and grabbed Shana’s ankle. Shana screamed and jumped on the spot, stomping the emerging zombie three times. Only after that did she pull out a pipe and fiercely thumped the zombie over a dozen times.
