Chapter 98: Chapter 93 Battle of North Lake_2

Shana finally couldn’t bear it and curled up her index finger to give Lin Wu a knock on the head.

"Hehe, I forgot you can’t pee in the game," Lin Wu realized, hit by the epiphany.

Was that the problem?

Although Shana was infuriated by Lin Wu, she quickly regained her vigor due to his swift recovery. The two followed a path straight ahead, not overlooking vending machines, toilets, or tents. About two hours later, they arrived at North Lake, situated at the heart of Forest Park.

...

North Lake is rectangular and quite large, nestled in a natural valley. On the left and right sides of the lake are cliffs a hundred meters high. The cliffs are essentially two large rocks. It is believed that visiting during the day, the view of the giant rocky cliffs would rival that of North Lake itself.

There are many small islands within North Lake, and Lin Wu and Shana could see tents set up on the two nearest islands. There was a park service area by the shore, offering tent rentals and water recreation facilities. According to the sign, the average water depth was one meter, with the deepest point being no more than one and a half meters.

One could imagine this small mountain spring-fed lake as an ideal sanctuary for the people of Left County to escape the summer heat.

There weren’t many zombies; Shana was in charge of clearing them while Lin Wu scavenged the service area, unfortunately finding nothing of worth. Thus, their gaze turned to the dozens of small islands in North Lake.

Just as they were about to enter the water, Lin Wu pulled Shana to a halt, and they both stopped to listen attentively and then crouched down. Shana asked, "Did you hear that?"

"Mhm, Blind Bats," Lin Wu replied.

"Why would there be Blind Bats here? Is there a building on the other side of the lake?" Shana pondered.

At the far end were hills, from which a dozen small streams flowed down to form North Lake. They changed their vantage point and observed the silhouette of what looked like a signal tower on the hill. Judging from the horizon, it was about 30 meters in height. Seeing this, Shana became excited, "Mushroom base?"

Lin Wu disagreed, "We’ve collected related information before. There are indeed several bases near Left County, but there was no mention of one at North Lake. It’s probably a meteorological observation station."

"Bet a day’s water," Shana proposed.

"Deal," Lin Wu looked around. The shore was very flat and open, and he said, "You stay here, I’ll go over and check it out." Not having encountered Blind Bats in the water before and for the sake of safety, Lin Wu preferred to let Shana stay behind.

Lin Wu further explained, "Blind Bats rely on hearing to locate enemies. Wading through water makes noise. You’ll be alright? This place is open on all sides, so if you hear the voice of Frenzy, just move aside and wait for me to come back."

"Got it," Shana said. "I’ll look around islands number 1, 2, and 3." The three small islands closest to the shore each had a tent.

"Hmm," Lin Wu raised his left foot, then drew it back, "What if there are diving zombies?"

Shana paused, thought for a moment, and replied, "Theoretically, there shouldn’t be."

"Why not?"

"Zombies are generally withered in appearance; they probably can’t sink," Shana answered.

"What if they’re holding a rock?" Lin Wu asked. "Diving with a rock to then lift it and strike people."

Shana immediately realized she definitely should not chat with Lin Wu like this and hence asked, "Are you scared?"

"Pfft," Lin Wu walked away: "Take care of yourself."

...

The sound of water was indeed annoying, any slight movement could alert the nearby zombies. The Blind Bat had a terrifying sense of hearing, and with every step Lin Wu took, it constantly gurgled towards the direction of the noise. Perhaps the distance was too great, other than targeting Lin Wu with its cries, the Blind Bat’s position didn’t change significantly.

There were numerous zombies back-floating and drifting on the lake surface. Lin Wu had intended to quietly approach and eliminate them, but as soon as he came within ten meters of a zombie, it immediately awakened and stood in the water, walking towards Lin Wu. The conflict that ensued made the water noise louder. However, the Wind Stinger looked especially cool when used in the water, sliding gracefully through and raising a curtain of water.

Shana found a muzzle attachment on the second island: a simple choke. The choke was mainly for shotguns, to increase the shooting distance. She put the item into her backpack and when she looked up again, Lin Wu was already more than a hundred meters away. By the time Shana finished scouring the third island for supplies, Lin Wu had disappeared without a trace.

Although she was alone, and despite being scared senseless before, Shana wasn’t frightened. What provided her with a sense of security was the open terrain. Within twenty meters, she could see the dark silhouettes of any approaching zombies and identify their type, coming up with the best countermeasure.

After scanning the area and seeing no sign of enemies, Shana sat on the ground mat next to the tent, took off her shoes, and poured out the water inside. The spring water was ice-cold and uncomfortable to soak her feet in. Barefoot and leaning back on the mat, Shana didn’t forget to stay vigilant of her surroundings.

North Lake was very quiet, the only thing that made Shana a bit apprehensive was the sight of red fruits seemingly growing on two massive stones.

Shana was about fifty meters away from the base of the stone mountains, and the red was halfway up the stone, not clearly visible. Shana remembered that when she was with Lin Wu, she hadn’t noticed any red on the stones. The red seemed to be increasing faintly. Was there danger? Shana didn’t think so; even if it was a nest of Frenzies, they wouldn’t be able to catch up to her even if they jumped down and survived the fall.

Suddenly, a whooshing sound came from the left, and at that moment, Shana remembered a kind of mutant zombie she had never encountered in North Town before: Six Wings. It was said that the Six Wings looked and fought much like regular zombies, with the only difference being six bony spurs on their back, feathered with plumes. Six Wings couldn’t fly but excelled at gliding from high places to ambush players on the ground.

When the trade caravan went to the Wanderer’s base in Right County, the Wanderers specifically warned that any building over ten meters tall should be watched for Six Wings.

"Six Wings," Shana muttered, a message to base that she had encountered trouble. She slung her crossbow over her shoulder, pulled out her pistol, and stood barefoot on the mat, ready in all directions.

A dark figure appeared from the high left, and without hesitation, Shana pulled the trigger. The bullet hit its mark on the Six Wings, which crashed into the lake and snapped its neck like a fighter jet with a blown engine, a pitiful end.

Shana immediately turned to the right and shot down the Six Wings that came within five meters of her. The splash from the impact hit Shana’s face, blinding her momentarily.

...

While Lin Wu was on an island luring Blind Bats near, the sound of gunfire made him immediately take off at speed towards Shana. Lin Wu knew Shana wouldn’t use the gun unless necessary. His strides through the water slowed him but also covered the Blind Bat’s gurgles. The Blind Bat launched a surprise attack from behind, tackling Lin Wu into the water.

Having been ambushed by Blood Ferocious Ma before, Lin Wu had learned to dodge under Maya’s guidance. The instant he was pounced on, he twisted his body to the side, crashing into the water with the Blind Bat, avoiding being pinned down.

Lin Wu propped himself up with his left hand and sprang up, his right hand smacking the Beast Trap onto the Blind Bat’s face. He didn’t have time to deal with the Blind Bat, bandaging himself up while dashing towards Shana. When Lin Wu was still about 40 meters away, he stopped in his tracks as the system notified him that the team had dissolved. Pulling up the System Base interface, he entered the Cemetery, where Shana’s grave stood prominently.

"Dammit!"

Lin Wu wasn’t sure if he was cursing the zombies or himself. As he cursed, he ran to where Shana’s body lay. With little time to spare, Lin Wu didn’t bother to find out how Shana had died and immediately began looting. Crossbow, cellphone...

Hearing the sound of something cutting through the air, Lin Wu turned to see a dark flying object rushing towards him. Without a moment’s hesitation, he dived into the water with the Wind Stinger. The Six Wings that attacked crashed into the ground and into the water, dead on impact. Lin Wu didn’t bother with the corpse of the Six Wings but ran onto the island to continue looting.

With Shana’s display mirror in his right hand and his left hand wielding the Silencer Quick Gunner skill, he shot down the flying creature to his right. After grabbing the pistol, he shot down another flying creature to his left. With one minute up, Shana’s body vanished without a trace. Before setting out, Shana had made two doses of serum. Considering that he was a Blood Plague survivor, both doses were kept in Shana’s backpack.

Aside from the serum, Shana’s backpack contained all the essential medicines, melee weapons, snacks, and previously scavenged items which all vanished along with her body.

Lin Wu shot down two more Six Wings, his stamina depleted, unable to activate Quick Gunner. He relied on fish-like leaps to continually change his position in the water, causing the Six Wings to miss their dives again and again.

As soon as he landed, he spotted the zombies drawn by the noise. Lin Wu popped a piece of chewing gum and ignored the approaching Screeching Zombie, ready to roar. He took off running, quickly retreating from North Lake.
