Chapter 965: Chapter 417 Scouting_2

"Thank you."

Lin Wu was about to leave when the woman held him back and said, "If you have no place to stay, walk along the road for about one kilometer; there’s a tent with a red plastic tarp by the roadside. That’s my home."

"Thank you." Lin Wu left the line and walked twenty meters away, then asked a few young people, "Hello, do you guys know where I can find a doctor? I’m from Survivor’s Base and I’m here to look for a doctor."

One of the young men sized up Lin Wu for a moment and asked, "You’re looking for a doctor?"

"Yes, preferably a surgeon who knows about herbal medicine."

The young man glanced at the soldiers stationed at the food distribution point and said, "My cousin is a doctor. Which base are you from?"

Lin Wu replied, "Starlight Base."

"I’ve heard of it," said another young man, "You should take him to see your cousin."

The first young man threw down his cards and stood up, while a third young man said, "I’ll go too, see if I can snag a meal."

"This way," the first young man led the way and explained, "My cousin charges for seeing patients, just some food as payment. Follow this road for a bit; there’s a temporary tribe inside, and my cousin lives there."

Lin Wu asked curiously, "A tribe? What do they eat?"

The first young man replied, "At first, there was game. Then they fished for shrimp in the ditches, followed by foraging for wild vegetables. Now they’ve started eating leaves. It’s just about enduring, really. If you can hold out until you board the ship, you’ll be saved."

Lin Wu continued to ask, "How long does it take to queue up now?"

The third young man answered, "At least four months, but it also depends on the situation. Professions like agriculture, animal husbandry, and architects can get a yellow card, which allows them to cut in line, and they might leave in just a few days."

Lin Wu inquired, "What about doctors?"

The first young man replied, "Doctors aren’t so in demand. The quarantine island doesn’t lack doctors, it lacks medicine. Without medicine, doctors can’t do much. Haven’t you planned to leave? How’s city life?"

Through their questions and answers, the atmosphere was quite harmonious. Soon they walked deeper into the forest, and Lin Wu saw the smoke from a fire rising; looking up, he could make out the roof of a pavilion.

Lin Wu stopped and took out his phone, "Right, have you guys seen my sister?"

The two men leaned in to check the phone screen, and then their expressions drastically changed. The phone hit the ground, Lin Wu flicked it up with the tip of his foot, pulled out a dagger with his left hand and stabbed the third man in the throat, while his right hand held a gun to the first man’s head: "Have you or haven’t you?" Lin Wu had decided to act as soon as he found their main camp, already resigned to dying in battle. Since he had lost Maya and Lin Meng, he didn’t want to live to return without them.

The grasp of the third man on Lin Wu’s shoulder grew weaker, his body became soaked with blood, and then he collapsed with a thump to the ground. The first man quickly said, "Big brother, don’t rush, your sister is okay."

"Where are they?" Lin Wu glanced at the pavilion, a hundred meters away, not knowing how many people there were, nor caring.

The first man said, "They killed two of our people."

Lin Wu said, "I don’t care how many of you die, where are they?"

The first man replied, "They were taken away by the Navy."

Yesterday, Lin Meng and Maya, accompanied by Hong Yi, interviewed several doctors but weren’t satisfied. During the visits, they were lured to Pavilion Tribe. Before they could drink the tampered tea, Maya felt something was off, immediately pulled a gun to hold a few people with bad intentions, and before knowing it, Lin Meng saw Maya react and drew her own gun, shooting dead two men and scaring the others into begging for mercy. Their tribe never had a doctor.

Apart from queuing for food, they also searched for newly arrived refugees on the Western Peninsula, deceiving them to pillage everything and then killing them. Some of them wandered outside during the day searching for targets, like some refugees who hoard food out of a lack of security. Then at night, they would pay a visit to these refugees. The roundabout roads near the parking lot were all under their control.

Pavilion robbers even traded the belts, name-brand watches, diamonds, and other items they scavenged to the naval base. As mentioned before, two years prior to the outbreak of the zombie virus, the world order was relatively stable, so these items still had some value.

Lin Meng and Maya therefore left the Pavilion Tribe. But unexpectedly, the Pavilion bandits covertly reported to the naval base that there were refugees armed and committing murder, something that the naval base could not tolerate. Possession of firearms not only meant the ability to rob other refugees, but it also posed a threat to the safety of the naval soldiers. Consequently, the navy dispatched two Humvees to find Lin Ma. With no choice, Maya and Lin Meng had to surrender, and they were handcuffed and taken to the naval base.

Male A told Lin Wu that there was a prison within the naval base, not very large, covering just over two hundred square meters, with two floors in total. Originally an affiliated building of the Western Peninsula Tourism Administration, the prison was put to use and filled to capacity in less than three days. This situation gave the naval base a considerable headache; they certainly couldn’t kill the prisoners because they represented the official authorities. Trials were pointless as there were no other prisons to send them to, but they still had to provide food for these inmates.

Thus, they would release those they could, and the naval base also stopped attending to security issues on the island. The prison was in name only. Male A assured Lin Wu that his sister would be released after a week in lockup. Lin Wu expressed disbelief, and seeing Lin Wu’s threatening demeanor, Male A quickly added that for such murder cases, prisoners would at least live for a few more days, followed by a summary trial that would sentence them to death.

Just as humanity cannot tolerate a beast that eats humans, the prison cannot tolerate people who kill.

When Lin Wu asked for more details about the naval base, Male A said he didn’t know much, and that one would need to ask people inside the Pavilion. Seeing that Male A was no longer useful, Lin Wu treated him as if he were a zombie, swiftly stabbing his dagger towards Male A’s head. However, a living human’s skull was much harder than Lin Wu anticipated, and the dagger did not penetrate. Lin Wu had no choice but to shoot him dead. By the time Pavilion associates came out upon hearing the noise, Lin Wu had already left two bodies behind and departed the scene.

...

Lin Wu sat among a group of refugees not far from the naval base, observing through the gate. As a citizen who only infiltrated military bases in games, Lin Wu felt this situation, also a game, was terrifyingly real.

The entire perimeter of the naval base was built up from three layers of shipping containers, with only two exits: one was the main gate, and the other was a small dock. The small dock extended downwards through stairs into a 20-meter-long concrete path, connecting to a 3-meter-deep sea, leaving almost no chance to break through.

There was a soldier stationed on each side of the gate. In front of the gate, there was a one-word shaped roadblock; when a car needed to pass, the guard would move aside one end of it. On top of the shipping containers near the two guards were sandbags, with heavy machine guns mounted on them.

Overall, the naval base felt similar to the Doomsday Fortress in Hardcore Mode, also known as a container fortress.

Lin Wu moved to the side, where the three layers of shipping containers were tightly joined, and the top was lined with lighting and searchlights. A patrol soldier walked back and forth on top. At the bottom of the containers was a three-meter-wide trench, with a ring of razor wire set up outside the trench.

Lin Wu then moved to the side facing the sea, where there was no razor wire, but there was a ten-meter high cliff.

The only route was to climb up the cliff from below to the top of the containers, where a patrol soldier was stationed, and there was also lighting. However, the lights were placed near the small dock, and the patrol soldier focused his movements near the small dock. Hence, the top of the cliff was a blind spot.

Considering the base as a rectangle, the gate was positioned on the left in the middle. The top side had the trench and razor wire. The small dock was at the lower right corner, and Lin Wu’s identified breakthrough point was at the lower left corner of the bottom side.

After understanding the layout, Lin Wu returned to the entrance of the naval base. Around five o’clock in the evening, five refugees emerged from within the base, individuals working there. Lin Wu targeted one of them and followed him for about five hundred meters to his tent set up on the roadside of the ring road.

There was a steady stream of people outside the tent. Lin Wu followed the man inside. Enticed by the promise of 5 cans of food, the man took a pen and paper from Lin Wu’s hand and drew a map of the interior of the naval base.

The prison was located on the right side of the rectangle, with the four-story base office building in the upper right corner, which was the main personnel gathering place, serving for command, distribution, and living areas. To the left of the office building was the armory. To the left of the small dock, there was a warehouse for living supplies.

Believing that Lin Wu intended to steal, the man emphasized the location and situation of the warehouses.

Near the left side of the rectangle was the parking lot, with dozens of Humvees, trucks, and other vehicles, and below that was the fuel warehouse. Toward the right side of the rectangle were two helicopter landing spots, with one helicopter always parked there, primarily flying between the base and the offshore mothership.

Lin Wu counted his own food, reserving enough for dinner and a late-night snack, and gave the rest to the man. As Lin Wu was about to leave, the man seemed moved by Lin Wu’s actions and said, "Brother, tonight’s password is ’ocean to the cake’."

"Password?" Isn’t that an archaic method from World War II?

"Due to the temporary nature of the base, passwords are used at night to verify identities. Of course, before you get to use the password, you’ll need a set of naval base soldier’s uniform."

"Where can I get a uniform?"

"From within the base."

"Thank you."
