Chapter 964: Chapter 417 Scouting

At high tide, the Western Peninsula is only 100 meters wide and connected to the mainland. There are two opposite roads, with no vehicles currently traveling on them, because the roads to the Western Peninsula have been clogged by cars.

Beside the land is the beautiful sight of the sea river, where the muddy water flows into the sea, creating a beauitful line where they meet. On the other side of the river is a three-kilometer-long sea-crossing railway bridge. This bridge has a history of a hundred years; vehicles used to travel on the upper level and trains on the lower, until an earthquake decades ago prohibited vehicles from crossing the bridge. Later, the course of the river was altered, the land was repaired, and the current highway was built on new land.

The sea-crossing railway bridge isn’t very high, because the water isn’t deep. When the tide recedes, land is exposed under the bridge, making it a popular destination for the residents of Day After Tomorrow City to go for weekend seaside trips.

Standing on the railway bridge, one can see the Western Peninsula, merely five square kilometers in size, teeming with people. The crowds are densest to the north, where the only dock of the Western Peninsula is located, as well as the temporary base of the United Nations Navy.

Upon entering the Western Peninsula, the number of people swells. Lin Wu’s attire doesn’t draw attention, but his lone presence does. He is polite, asking for information from friendly-looking individuals and letting them know he is searching for his sister, thereby gathering quite a bit of intelligence.

The naval base has a daily transport capacity of 500 people. It’s not that they couldn’t transport more, but the temporary shelters on the deserted islands can only accommodate a certain number of people each day, and 500 is actually over the limit. After all, zombie viruses have erupted globally, and no one has the energy to focus on the refugees of a single area in Day After Tomorrow City.

Upon arrival at the Western Peninsula, one must first get a printed number card at the docks and queue up for boarding according to the number. There is only one ship per day, carrying 500 people each time, so it is easy to calculate when one’s turn to board will be. On the Western Peninsula, these number cards are the hard currency, the closer the number is to boarding, the more valuable the card.

Currently, there are over one hundred thousand people stranded on the Western Peninsula. The food supplied by the navy can barely sustain life; despite this, many people use violence to seize resources, leading to a high number of deaths by malnutrition.

Someone saw Maya and three others with a chubby man going to the naval base. Lin Wu followed the directions provided and arrived at the naval post.

Inside the naval base, there’s a large crane, and walls made of stacked containers, leaving only a five-meter-wide door guarded by armed soldiers.

From a distance, one can see the sign on the container: Unauthorized personnel are not allowed to enter or exit at will. However, there are hundreds of people gathered by the naval base’s gate, who are there to apply for corpse transport work. Their job is to load the bodies of those who died on the peninsula and zombies onto trucks, drive the trucks into the small military dock inside the base, then transfer the bodies onto ships for a mass sea burial.

If one secures the job, they can receive the ration of three people’s food and water per day, which is a significant perk given the indefinite waiting period.

As Lin Wu approached the gate, a guard immediately stepped forward and warned, "Please do not cross the yellow line."

Lin Wu said, "I’m here to find a friend. Yesterday morning, my friend sent a VIP here."

The guard responded, "I don’t know about that."

Lin Wu said, "Could you please ask around for me? The VIP is a banker, missing an ear, with a significant background."

The guard answered, "Don’t know him."

Lin Wu took a look inside for a while; there weren’t many soldiers. He had heard before that the naval base hardly managed matters concerning the Western Peninsula; their primary responsibilities were maintaining order for boarding and securing the safety of the three food distribution points. They would only consider intervening if someone committed a wrongdoing in their presence. Thus, despite its elevated status on the Western Peninsula, the naval base is unfavorably regarded by the refugees.

In the middle of the Western Peninsula lies a mountain range, with a circular road along the coast. Some refugees subsist along this road. Although resources are scarce, the road is slightly more secure due to the occasional patrol by naval vehicles, but food and water essentially rely on distribution from the naval base.

Some refugees, after obtaining their boat tickets and while waiting in line, venture into the mountain range to search for food and water sources, gradually forming groups. Due to the absence of any judicial authority, this area is extremely chaotic, and robber gangs even emerged.

Lin Wu learned this information from a refugee while queueing for food in a parking lot. After gathering the basic information, Lin Wu took out his cell phone, which had a photo of Maya on it. He asked people in the queue, "Excuse me, has anyone seen this person?"

Everyone he asked said no, until one woman instinctively glanced sideways after looking at the photo. Over there sat five robust men on a mat playing poker, and then she shook her head at Lin Wu: "No."

Lin Wu secretly passed a few energy bars from his pocket into the woman’s hand. After a quick glance, she let Lin Wu cut in line in front of her and whispered in his ear, "Your sister and the two other girls went into the mountains with them yesterday. These guys are bad news. If they find out you have supplies, or even just fancy your clothes and shoes, they won’t hesitate to deceitfully or forcefully take what they want."

Lin Wu asked softly, "Where did they go?"

The woman glanced to the side. There was a parking lot with a trail leading up the mountain, and she said, "I just saw them walking in with two people, but I don’t know exactly where they went. After getting my food, I went to queue up at another food distribution point."
