Chapter 794: Chapter 357 Winter Chill_2
"Lin Meng, stick close to Shana and don’t lag behind," Maya had intended to point out that Lin Meng’s combat skills couldn’t keep up with Shadow Team’s pace. On second thought, she realized it would take too much time to explain thoroughly. Besides, it didn’t matter much whether Lin Meng lived or died since she could respawn after ten minutes, so Maya didn’t try to persuade her, simply giving her a serious instruction.
Maya patted Lin Wu on the shoulder, who was ready in front of her, "Let’s start."
Lin Wu extended his gun around the corner and fired towards the roof, unlike the enemy’s sporadic shots, his style was rapid fire, with the goal of emptying the magazine in 7 seconds. Having completed his volley, Shana advanced and fired behind Snow Egg’s shield. While Shana reloaded, Lin Wu linked up seamlessly with the shooting rhythm under the cover of Maya’s shield.
In this manner, Shadow Team advanced forcefully to the edge of the rooftop, seizing the junction of the corridor and the rooftop. The walls on either side offered quite decent temporary cover.
With a wave of her hand, Maya and Snow Egg continued to protect the front with their shields. Little Knife, Shana, Lin Wu, and Lin Meng threw countless Shock Bombs and smoke grenades over the heads of Maya and Snow Egg onto the rooftop. They threw as many as they had. After exhausting their supply, the six of them emerged, guns blazing with thermal imaging attachments.
Although the rooftop area was not small and was an open space, it could not withstand the reckless waste by a bunch of the profligate. Thick smoke billowed, reducing visibility to less than two meters.
Lin Meng followed Shana into the dense fog and, not paying attention, lost track of her team. Standing amidst the heavy smoke, all she heard were constant gunshots around her, and feeling vulnerable and helpless, she could only stand in place and ask softly, "Where are you guys? Ah, I’ve been hit, I’m dead."
Lin Wu glanced doubtfully at the firearm he had looted, wondering why there was a sticker of a little shrimp cracker on the gun? The thought crossed his mind, but he didn’t have time to ponder, as there were more important matters at hand. The Shadow Squad formed a circle, advancing in a large fan formation led by the shield bearers. They searched through the scopes’ thermal imagers, eliminating anything warm that came into view. At one point, Shana was shot in the head, but her helmet absorbed the damage. Snow Egg was hit by several bullets, but without hesitation, he used a full treatment card, thanks to his bulletproof vest.
Fortunately for the attackers, they couldn’t see; if they could, they might have jumped off the building in despair. Shadow Squad excelled in both offense and defense, virtually indestructible like cockroaches from a defensive standpoint. Offensively, their firepower was brutal and relentless, spraying bullets in all directions as if they cost nothing, relentless in emptying magazines regardless of whether a heat source was spotted or not, the gunfire never ceasing...
In thirty seconds, the circular search was over, five heat sources had been killed, yielding five sets of equipment.
After the battle, Maya did a headcount and asked, "Where’s Lin Meng?"
"Dead, probably? The enemy was just too strong." Lin Wu stealthily peeled off the shrimp cracker sticker from a certain gun, figuring the naïve girl wouldn’t recognize it anyway.
True to form, Lin Meng respawned ten minutes later back in instance 771 and didn’t notice the missing gun in her arsenal while moving equipment. Even if she had noticed, what could she do? She was the one who had fallen behind. The naughty Lin Wu had even prepared an excuse for such a scenario.
However, Lin Meng’s behavior made Lin Wu feel a bit guilty. Lin Meng solemnly said to him, "Even though your words are harsh, they are the truth. I should apologize to you. I really am a burden to the Shadow Team at the moment."
If you had been killed by the enemy or had delayed the team’s progress, then you might be considered a burden. But in fact, Lin Meng’s role in this battle was insignificant.
Lin Wu was not about to indulge in pleasantries with her. Accepting Lin Meng’s apology, he nodded his approval of her act of contrition, "Good that you understand, next time be obedient."
Even Little Knife couldn’t stand to watch Lin Wu push Lin Meng around like this and squeezed past him to help organize her weapons. The weapon exchange event was postponed due to the unexpected attack.
After sorting them out, Lin Meng took her weapons and left the instance. Shadow Team also returned to base, where Stone greeted them and asked, "Any idea who the attackers were?"
"Couldn’t see clearly," replied Lin Wu. "But, judging from the gear we got, it must’ve been four paupers, equipped with only basic bulletproof vests, rifles, and pistols. No night vision and just a single aiming accessory for their firearms."
Shana questioned, "Weren’t there five sets?"
Lin Wu laughed it off, "Right, right, five paupers. Look at my memory."
"Doesn’t matter anymore," Stone stretched and straightened his back, saying, "We’ve got an hour left, and I’ve had enough of this damned place. Let’s all come out and take a good look at the entirety of our temporary base, and see the fruits of our labor these past days."
Given the surplus of materials, the base’s defenses included two electric grids. The eight shops lining the street were all converted into gun turrets, including one Gatling turret, two high-level turrets, two second-level turrets, and three standard turrets.
Everyone stood around the small plaza, chatting and cursing the lousy event; there was nothing to eat, not even tea to drink.
Finally, time dragged on to 7:30 PM.
The system broadcast announced the event status. In this Underground City event, Shadow certainly stood out, being the only base that cleared a Hell mode instance. Next was Snow Pine Base, which didn’t let Shadow Base’s achievements deter them from challenging a Hell instance. Instead, they cleared a Hard mode instance three times. However, it was the same instance each time. More than twenty other bases made the rankings, but aside from three bases that cleared a Hard instance, the rest only cleared Normal instances.
