Chapter 793: Chapter 357: Cold Winter
Only Lin Wu can slack off with impunity when dealing with Shadow. Even when dreadfully bored, Shana would listlessly work the joystick. Unable to stand it any longer, Su Shi took over Shana’s task. As Shana lay on the small plaza, she had no desire to move, merely gazing at the azure sky, feeling the beauty of life itself.
The main operators of the slot machines were Maya and Little Knife.
Maya had determination; for her, chopping zombies, leveling up, scavenging, building, and playing the slots were essentially the same—all work. To her, work was work and it was necessary to do well whatever the task at hand.
Little Knife found it genuinely enjoyable. Even earning a few bullets could put her in a good mood. When a small prize came out, such as a handgun, she would be ecstatic and invite everyone over in her excitement. A big prize, like a firearm, would make her uncontrollably shout for everyone to come and look.
Regardless, what was supposed to be an action-packed, frantic effort in the dungeon instance had now become an early retirement activity. The curse was that one could only sleep for five hours a day, so no one completely abandoned the slot machines.
On the fifth day, Lin Meng encountered Shana on the rooftop, who had a Death Immunity Card and a significant amount of weaponry. Shana had made some arrangements with Lin Meng. The biggest uncertainty was whether the Hidden Portal would remain in the same place after the instance reset. Shadow only had two Death Immunity Cards, so they might have to use one today.
The next, and final, trade was set for six o’clock in the morning on the eighth day.
After surviving the fifth day, there was the sixth day, and after surviving the sixth day, there came the seventh.
During these days, aside from the occasional excitement brought by the zombie sieges, the base remained quiet. Everyone was lethargic, and the only constant sound was the electronic hum of the slot machines. Because Shana successfully jumped off the building on the fifth day, she and Lin Wu went to deliver goods to Lin Meng at six o’clock in the morning on the eighth day.
Upon arriving at instance 771, they didn’t move but sat down right away, unloading bundles of guns. They were near the elevator hall on the 32nd floor, at the intersection of a T-junction, with offices on the right and the rooftop on the left.
Lin Wu, using a bundle of rifles as a pillow, lounged back and said, "The atmosphere in the base has been off these last few days."
Shana said, "There’s a lack of basic entertainment in the event." Perhaps Dawn thought that the slot machines represented the best form of entertainment, as history shows that most humans get addicted to slots after playing.
"A lack?" Lin Wu said. "Why do I feel so busy?"
"That’s because you can swim on land, play rock-paper-scissors with Wai, and skip stones," Shana said. "The base doesn’t lack entertainment; what’s lacking is a heart to discover it."
A blue light appeared, and Lin Meng entered instance 771. Seeing the guns neatly bundled up, she was instantly astounded: "So many, so many, so many." Surprising matters need to be said thrice.
Lin Wu chuckled and said, "Just wait until Dawn checks your data and accuses you of exploiting a game bug to maliciously gain in-game currency."
Lin Meng was stunned, "Really?"
Lin Wu nodded, "Really."
"Even if I will, I want to." Lin Meng smiled, taking Shana’s hand, "Thank you for the hard work. Thanks, everyone."
Shana asked, "How many points can we get from these?"
Lin Meng replied, "It’s uncertain. Guns are categorized, too. Aka class rifles only fetch 150 points, while most 5.56 class rifles can go for 200 points. It also depends on the gun’s accessories, some of which are pricier than the gun itself. On average, each gun might sell for 200 points."
Lin Wu asked, "How many points do you have now?" Shana also wanted to ask this but felt it impolite to inquire about personal possessions so directly. However, there was no issue with Lin Wu asking, as Lin Meng had never even considered this question; she didn’t tend to overcomplicate things.
Lin Meng replied, "Around 25,000. This batch should total up to about 50,000 points."
"Wow!" Lin Wu and Shana looked at each other. They didn’t understand what 50,000 points signified, but before figuring that out, they decided to join Lin Meng in her astonishment.
Suddenly, a malicious bullet flew from the rooftop, striking Lin Wu in the head. With a clang, he fell. Shana hit the deck and pulled Lin Wu into the elevator area. A second later, a barrage of bullets poured in, pocking the ground and walls with bullet holes.
Lin Meng clumsily grabbed a gun. Then, seeing Lin Wu’s eyes wide open, she asked in surprise, "How can you be unharmed?"
"I won’t tell you." Wearing a full helmet, Lin Wu knew they’d walked into an ambush. The worse news was that they hadn’t activated the fog, so they could only see the corridor but had no view of the rooftop situation.
Lin Wu, taking cover against the wall, blindly fired towards the rooftop to suppress the enemy’s gunfire. Meanwhile, Shana immediately connected to the headset and called for help on the public channel: "Calling headquarters, we’re under attack." Shadow had developed the capability to communicate both inside and outside the instance.
After grasping the situation, Maya promptly organized her team and supplies to enter the instance. While preparing, she laid out tactics and distributed tasks over the earpiece—not a second wasted.
Thirty seconds later, Maya arrived in instance 771 with Snow Egg and Little Knife. Upon seeing the trio, she asked right away, "Are you ready?"
Everyone answered, "Ready."
Maya turned to Lin Meng, "You stay."
Lin Meng, "Why?"
Lin Wu, "Because you’re a liability."
Lin Meng, "I am not a liability." Annoyed—everyone has guns, okay? I might not be as good as you, but I won’t be much worse. Why look down on myself?
