Chapter 526: Chapter 263: Return to North Town (Part 2)
Shana knocked on Lin Wu’s head, "I know how to safely reach North Town, on the condition that you take me with you."
Lin Wu perked up, "Beauty, you’re so pretty."
Shana: "I have a condition."
Lin Wu said, "Don’t you dislike getting wet? With such heavy rain, you’ll be soaked through in no time."
Shana answered, "Where you fall, you get up. Since I got so emotional because of being soaked, I want to try whether I can control myself."
Lin Wu asked, "But what if you become emotional halfway? Should I kill you or myself?"
Shana, impatiently, "So are you coming or not?"
"I’ll come," Lin Wu paused, "But, you don’t need to challenge yourself."
Shana: "Do you know? That’s the sentence I’ve heard most from my parents. That’s why I’ve never made a breakthrough in any field. Dance, public speaking, singing... What does your nodding mean?" Furious!
Lin Wu honestly said, "Your singing is not pleasant to the ear."
Shana, even more furious, "I trained as a soprano."
Lin Wu stretched out his hand and scraped his fingernails on the glass, making a disgusting sound, "That’s what high notes sound like."
"You’re utterly unreasonable." Shana said fiercely, "Are you still coming or not? If you want to, compliment me right now."
Lin Wu: "You’re very beautiful and have a good figure, which makes people drool at a glance."
Shana speechless, "You could’ve left off that last part. I’m going to pack , wait for me." Dammit Lin Wu, you always speak the truth which is hard to refute. Of course, a soprano voice is beautiful, but Lin Wu doesn’t appreciate it, what can I do?
That’s not right! Drool at a glance? When he first saw me in the past, he chopped me down. But being beautiful and having a good figure are facts, I should believe him.
...
Although the railway was built along the mountain and was located high up, avoiding floodwaters, the journey was not smooth. The most direct reason was that lots of factories in Shuixi used freight trains for transport, resulting in many and complex tracks, which easily led one astray if not careful. After getting lost once, Lin Wu used a drone to scout the way. As for the personal computer, despite it being full of technological feel, to Shana who had seen the technologies of Blue Star, it was just a very outdated electronic product.
"After walking this far, can you tell me now what we’re going to North Town for?" Shana, wearing a raincoat and holding an umbrella, treated the railway track as a balance beam and seemed to be in a pretty good mood.
Lin Wu said, "Back when I was at the Mountain Top Church Base, I inadvertently discovered an electronic lock."
"Oh?" Shana asked, "You never mentioned that."
Lin Wu asked, "Have you ever heard me mention that I have a mole on my stomach?"
Shana: "No."
Lin Wu: "Exactly. I can’t tell you everything, and you might not want to know everything either."
Shana poked the walking Lin Wu with a cane on the adjacent rail, "Are these two things really similar? No, from what I know about you, if it was just an ordinary lock, considering the hours of walking in heavy rain, your choice would likely be to forget about the lock."
Lin Wu asked, "Do you believe in a man’s intuition?"
Shana said, "I believe, but I don’t believe your tall tales."
"Hehe," Lin Wu laughed awkwardly, "There’s this story. Your classmate is poor, and one day, while walking behind him, you see he dropped his wallet, at that moment..."
Shana quickly answered, "Call out to him and return it to him."
Lin Wu: "Here’s another story. One day while you were walking, you find a wallet."
Shana thought for a moment, "Hand it to the police. If unclaimed after six months, the wallet becomes mine. Ah... I see now."
Lin Wu looked at Shana, "See what?"
Shana: "You..." She didn’t seem to have understood after all. Lin Wu seemed to know about the lock, but he didn’t want to acknowledge it. In fact, he did know, which is why he was willing to walk for hours in the rain to open it. But he didn’t want to admit that he knew, preferring to treat it as a simple lock-opening trip.
That said, Lin Wu had some psychological burden regarding this lock, stemming from what he knew about it. Yet, it still didn’t make sense. Lin Wu definitely couldn’t have feelings of affection or guilt towards an NPC, so the lock should be unrelated to NPCs. As such a beautiful girl with a good figure, when someone decides to ’kill’ me just like that, it’s unlikely due to any psychological burden over a stranger player.
Lin Wu didn’t have many acquaintances, in fact, nobody had many.
Before Shana could figure it out, Lin Wu stopped in his tracks, "Wolves."
Just ten meters ahead, beside the railway track, was a small shed, probably a temporary resting place for railway maintenance workers. The shed was small, only ten square meters. Inside the shed, the five wolves didn’t know whether they had made this place their base or were just taking shelter from the rain. It was clear from one look in each other’s eyes that the wolves were very hungry. But they didn’t realize Lin Wu quite appreciated their meat.
After a few muted gunshots, Lin Wu and Shana dragged the wolves’ bodies into the shed, cutting meat while taking shelter from the rain. Each wolf provided a kilogram of meat, which was a pretty good haul.
Shana said on the side, "The consecutive days of heavy rain have made food scarce for carnivorous animals. They are forced to leave their habitats and come closer to human areas in search of food."
Lin Wu said, "After you attribute emotions to them, it’s hard for me to cut into them, let alone the guilt that might come later."
Shana asked with a smile, "If I were an NPC, would you ’knife’ me too?"
Lin Wu gave Shana a glance, "I would."
Shana was dissatisfied, "But I’m a very pretty NPC."
Lin Wu said, "In my eyes, your backpack is prettier than you."
"Hmph!"
Having finished packing up, Lin Wu said, "Wait for me."
Soon after, Lin Wu brought some firewood into the shed, pulled Shana out, and threw an Incendiary Grenade to light the damp wood. After making sure the shed wasn’t damaged by the fire, Lin Wu threaded the wolf meat onto thin sticks and placed them at the edge of the fire to roast.
Shana asked, "Does Maya know you’re using Incendiary Grenades like this?"
Lin Wu replied angrily, "It was clearly you who used it, so why frame me?"
Shana instantly laughed so hard she leaned back and forward, then sighed, "I’m really not a qualified Deputy Commander. Seeing you waste gasoline and not having any thought to stop you."
Lin Wu said, "If everyone were like Maya, that would be terrifying. If everyone were cut from the same mold, what would be the point of the world? I’m not saying Maya is bad, I’m saying having people who are all the same is not good."
"I’m not one to stir up trouble," Shana said. "Yesterday, I read two stories, give me your opinion. One story is about a teacher who is very strict and uses physical and verbal discipline on their students, and in the end, the student couldn’t bear it and committed suicide."
Lin Wu said, "What’s there to evaluate? A masochist."
Shana continued, "The second story, a teacher is very strict and uses physical and verbal discipline on their students, the student becomes very successful. After achieving fame, they are immensely grateful to the teacher."
Lin Wu replied, "Strict teachers produce successful students."
Shana said, "Actually, it’s one story, called ’Farewell My Concubine.’ One teacher, two students, it’s a story about an ancient opera troupe. The difference is, the student who committed suicide didn’t want to be a famous actor, while the successful student wanted to be a famous actor."
Lin Wu asked, "So what? Does it have any educational significance?" In Lin Wu’s view, they both seemed incidental.
Shana said, "When the game began, my goal was The Ring of the Fortress. Later I found out that although I had the potential to succeed, I lacked the perseverance to do so. I didn’t even want to be the Deputy Commander, I just wanted to live happily in the shadows. But I forced myself to take on the responsibilities of the Deputy Commander."
Lin Wu said, "If you’re not the Deputy Commander, someone else has to be. Someone’s got to have bad luck, think of it more positively, brother."
"You won’t feel comfortable until you hit me, will you?"
Lin Wu laughed briefly, "Crude, but not without reason. The Deputy Commander doesn’t have a higher salary or better treatment, only more to give. Strictly speaking, it’s not a good position. But the jobs of the doctors at Emerald Feather and Starlight aren’t great either."
Shana agreed, "Yes, once someone’s injured, they need to stay in the infirmary. Especially yesterday, when treating our wounds, they had to soak in the water the whole time. They never complained from beginning to end. Alright, I take back what I just said."
"Agreed," Lin Wu handed over a stick, "Time to eat meat."
Shana took the stick and looked skeptically at the slices of meat, asking, "Is it cooked?"
"Don’t know," said Lin Wu. "But we’ll find out soon."
"Don’t dodge.," Shana extended two fingers and gently flicked Lin Wu’s forehead.
Lin Wu asked, "Are you in a good mood today?"
"Not bad," Shana replied. "Thank you."
"At your service."
