Chapter 527: Chapter 264: Return to North Town (Part 2)

After walking along the railway tracks for approximately an hour and a half, the two turned from the northwest to the north direction. There was no forest on the side to block the wind, creating a wind funnel, and a strong gust hit them head-on. This was Shana’s first experience of feeling like she was taking off. Lin Wu reacted quickly, squatting and stretching out his leg to cushion Shana’s head as she fell.

The two stepped back a few paces, and the force of the wind lessened. Shana recalled the nearby terrain from memory and said, "The crosswind section is about a kilometer. After one kilometer, we will be facing the wind head-on for the entire journey."

Nightmare, though not intending to trap Lin Wu, could trap him unintentionally. She had been traveling from the safe house to Doomsday Fortress, mostly with the wind at her back.

Lin Wu looked back and saw a short tunnel about fifty meters away: "Shana, stay here. I’ll give you the incendiary grenades and wolf meat."

Shana said, "I’ve already told you, I have never faced difficulties head-on. I know it’s dangerous, I know it’s hard, just like I’ve given up every time. But today I want to try, to challenge myself, to prove to myself..."

Lin Wu, losing patience, asked, "Are you going or not?"

"I’m going."

"Then go, why all this nonsense."

Immediately irritated, Shana stepped on Lin Wu’s toes. He moved his foot away, placing his shoes on top of Shana’s. She could only hum and turn her head to the side.

Lin Wu chuckled, retracted his foot, and took out the rope he always carried when going out; the two tied the ropes around their waists. As soon as Lin Wu left the comfort zone, the crosswind swept through, instantly blowing away the hooded raincoat. Lin Wu retreated, stuffed the straw coat into his backpack, and Shana likewise removed her raincoat. They looked at each other, nodded, and Lin Wu set off again.

They proceeded one behind the other, keeping their bodies as low as possible, even devolving from upright beings to crawling creatures to avoid being swept away by the crosswind. After about two hundred meters, the terrain to the right of the railway tracks began to lower, and they moved to the right side, using the protruding parts of the tracks to block the wind and continued moving forward while crouching, significantly increasing their speed.

Soon they reached the area facing into the wind, crawling falteringly in conditions that made it almost impossible to keep their eyes open. After a few hundred meters, Lin Wu waited for Shana to crawl beside him and shouted in her ear, "How is it going?"

"I can handle it," Shana shouted back. "Idiot, you could use the headset."

Lin Wu tapped Shana’s head. Under her angry glare, he continued forward. At that moment, Shana had two beliefs: one was to overcome difficulties and challenge herself; the other was curiosity about what place could make Lin Wu pay such a price to reach.

Half an hour later, they struggled across the railway bridge and entered the territory of North Town. Looking out over the fields of the farm, a familiar sense of home welled up in them. There was no need to continue along the railway track, so after some discussion, they decided to cross the fields toward the east.

The journey was not easy. Not to mention Shana, even Lin Wu, with his Agility of 21 stars, stumbled and fell multiple times. At first, Lin Wu was worried about Shana’s morale, as he could see she was gritting her teeth and persevering. However, Lin Wu was clearly overthinking it; today, Shana seemed very brave and showed no signs of negative emotions.

First, they reached the cement factory occupied by Blood Heart. This place held too many of Lin Wu’s memories, yet it also seemed devoid of any. Here, he had mechanically worked under Maya’s leadership.

Once there, the wind had died down considerably, and they were able to walk side by side and talk normally. While reminiscing about the past, they walked toward the road. Suddenly, a pair of hands landed on Lin Wu’s shoulder. Reacting instinctively, he rolled to the left. Looking back, he saw a Blood Zombie lunging at him, with a dozen more Blood Zombies following it.

Damn Blood Heart! He had actually forgotten the rules of the Blood Mist area. Lin Wu drew his knife with his left hand, and Wind Stinger passed by the zombie, grabbing Shana, who hadn’t reacted yet, and throwing her aside to evade the zombie’s attack. Even so, Shana got infected with the zombie virus for being too close to the Blood Zombie.

Having lost the element of surprise, the zombies were no match for Lin Sha. After dealing with the zombies, the two continued on their way and soon reached the road, spotting the former sub-base: the Supermarket Base. They had intended to go there to treat their wounds, but just as they approached the entrance, they heard the sound of a horde of zombies inside the supermarket and had to abandon the idea.

The elevation of North Town was three hundred meters higher than Left County. There was no extensive waterlogging, but being on the outskirts of a small town with only natural drainage, there were ponds at the roadsides and in low-lying areas of the fields.

Lin Wu recalled the terrain for a moment and led Shana into one of the ponds. He would look back at Shana every few steps, fearing that wading through the water would bring her spirits down. After the fifth look, Shana, fed up, plunged into the water, splashing with her hands and glaring at Lin Wu.

Two minutes later, they arrived at a semi-open cowshed. The cowshed was small with no outer walls, only the fences of the cattle pens inside. Since the area was not large and there were not many zombies, they easily cleared out the cowshed. Before reaching the cowshed, Lin Wu made contact with Stone, who asked Starlight to go to the infirmary. But after Starlight went to the infirmary, she could not establish contact with Shana.

They had just been talking a minute ago, hadn’t they?

Lin Wu, puzzled, walked out of the cowshed and into the pond, walked back about five meters, and successfully connected to Starlight’s headset. Moving one meter back towards the cowshed, the conversation cut off. Shana, squatting by the cowshed and understanding what happened, mimicked collapsing to the ground in exasperation: could they get any unluckier?
