Chapter 525: Chapter 263: Return to North Town (Part 1)
The personal computer was akin to the battered cellphones commonly seen in games; it adhered to the left forearm in an arc shape and was so unobtrusive, it could hardly be felt. When gazed upon for over half a second, an operational interface appeared and could be directly controlled through brain waves.
Currently, aside from displaying the date and time, the personal computer had only two pieces of software. One was a compass. The other was a hacking software called "Intrusion." The brief introduction stated that this software could hack into most electronic devices—the more advanced and high-end the device, the easier it was to hack into.
Lin Wu felt a twinge of regret at this point. Reflecting on the game so far, he had encountered very few electronic locks that required hacking. Because of this impractical feature, he had wasted 1,200 electronic components from the base.
The system tutorial detailed the personal computer’s extended capabilities and offered guidance to newcomers. Following the system’s instructions, Lin Wu activated Bluetooth and brought the personal computer close to the drone, and soon they were connected. Next, he could set up the drone through the computer, with settings that included an automatic cruising, automatic filming, and automatic warning. It even had an auto-recharge function. When its battery was nearly depleted, the drone would fly to a designated location to recharge automatically, provided the location was appropriate for recharging.
In addition, it was possible to set the drone to track individuals. For instance, to track Maya, the drone’s video recording function would first need to be used to film her from all angles, storing her information in the personal computer. Once Maya left the house, the tracking could be activated, and the drone would follow her nearby. This function could also be used to search for missing people, but it proved to be not very effective in practice.
Having returned to the logging site, Lin Wu recorded everyone’s information in case someone went missing one day. At the same time, he also brought back two mahjong sets. As the sounds of the tiles clacked in the background, Lin Wu stepped out of the hall, glanced at the rain, and prepared to leave.
"Hey," Shana called, "where are you going? There’s still tiger meat today; no need to hunt. The sun is supposed to come out tomorrow."
Lin Wu said, "No, I’m going somewhere."
Shana asked, "Bounty Hunter?"
"No," Lin Wu’s eyes flickered as he hesitated to speak further.
Curiosity piqued, Shana pressed, "Going where?" It seemed this fellow was up to something again.
Lin Wu replied, "North Town."
"North Town?" Shana looked into the distance. "The whole county is submerged in water; you’re going to cross a reservoir to get to North Town?"
Lin Wu said, "It doesn’t seem that deep."
Shana said, "That’s true, but you have to cross Left County River unless..."
"Unless?"
Shana continued, "To get to North Town, you must wade to the river’s edge first. The average water depth is about one and a half meters, and in some areas, it exceeds two meters. Then you use the Power Tower Aerial Corridor to reach Shuidong, followed by more wading northwards. The entire journey would take at least five to six hours to complete." The only good news was the lack of zombies outdoors.
Shana explained, "A round trip would take about 12 hours. For safety, traveling in pairs or groups of three is required, with ropes tied around the waist to prevent anyone from being swept away by undercurrents. Despite this, the journey is very perilous."
Lin Wu struggled with the decision, "But after the floodwaters retreat, the zombies will emerge again."
Shana replied, "At least then we’d have a chance; today, there’s not even a sliver of opportunity."
Shadow’s car had turned into a waterlogged vehicle. Although a few dings did not count as damage, after all, it was a car, not a submarine, and it certainly couldn’t drive normally.
And the sewers? Of course not, as they were full of water too.
Lin Wu could only sigh and abandon the idea; Shana asked, "Hey, what are you going to North Town for?"
Lin Wu said lacklusterly, "To meet my online love in person."
"Where’s the net from?"
"Radio, radio love." Lin sat outside unhappily, watching the relentless downpour.
Shana no longer paid attention to Lin Wu and stepped to the side of the logging site to connect with Maya. "Lin Wu wants to go to North Town, and he seems very anxious. Do you know why?"
Maya asked, "Today?"
"I’ve already persuaded him not to take the risk. Do you know the reason?"
After a long pause, Maya responded, "He never mentioned anything about North Town. Hold on."
Maya inquired, "Nightmare, how did you come to Doomsday Fortress?" It was the last day of the month and, keeping his promise, Nightmare had delivered the Outpost Card to Doomsday Fortress. He had planned to enjoy a cup of tea before leaving but coincidentally, Shana and Maya were in contact, and Maya asked Nightmare this question.
"I followed the railway," Nightmare replied. "I just walked along the tracks."
Maya questioned, "Can you get there without crossing Left County River?"
Nightmare answered, "You have to. But there’s a railway bridge between two mountains spanning Left County River. No need to go through Shuidong, just head north directly. Follow the tracks, and you’ll reach the farms below North Town. You know my previous base was near the railroad."
Maya inquired, "How long does it take you to make a trip?"
"My temporary base is on Route 99..." Nightmare stopped. "You mean from North Town to Doomsday Fortress? I left North Town at three o’clock yesterday afternoon and walked for about three hours. Yes, I got back to base a little past six. So, I delivered the Outpost Card to you first thing this morning."
"Oh," Maya nodded, then reconnected with Shana, "Take the railway north, and in about three hours, you should reach the farms in North Town."
"Ah, I had forgotten about the railway."
Shana ended the call and squatted in front of Lin Wu, who grumbled, "You’re blocking my view."
Dissatisfied, Shana retorted, "I’m prettier than the scenery."
Lin Wu looked at Shana seriously for a moment, "I disagree."
