Chapter 439: Chapter 228 A1_3
"Ah, a Sudoku lock," Lin Wu groaned as he examined the door lock, immediately feeling a headache coming on.
Maya smiled inwardly, shouldered past Lin Wu, and began to manipulate the Sudoku grid with her fingers. She had only made it halfway when a sound of someone hitting the floor echoed, and both turned to see Nightmare already lying dead on the ground.
"Damn!" Lin Wu exclaimed, "She was telling the truth."
The two of them held their guns at the ready and slowly advanced. Suddenly, Maya turned around but there was nothing behind her. With their backs to each other, they reached Nightmare’s corpse, and Lin Wu bent down to turn over the body, revealing a bleeding wound on the back of Nightmare’s head.
Lin Wu instinctively looked toward the statue in the nearby pool, an ancient Chinese stone sculpture of one of the Four Heavenly Kings, granite-colored. As his gaze met the statue, it blinked—an ability similar to Lin Wu’s unique Wind Stab Skill. The statue then lowered its head, charged out from the pool, and passed under Lin Wu’s armpit in an attempt to stab him in the back of his head with a reverse grip knife.
Lin Wu activated Wind Stinger, tumbling into the pool and narrowly evading the deadly strike, "Complain, where’s player protection? Glug glug..." he sputtered, gulping down water. For a moment, Lin Wu was confused; player protection only applied in player versus player combat.
Hearing the commotion, Maya swiftly turned around, only to see the marble-colored dwarf transform into a shadow that zipped into the bamboo grove by the road. As he entered the grove, his body seemed to turn the color of the bamboo and he disappeared with it.
With a dagger in his left hand and a pistol in his right, Lin Wu stood in the pool and said, "We’ve encountered an expert of our own level. " Besides skills similar to the Wind Stab Skill, the dwarf’s Chameleon Skill was akin to one of the Concealment abilities of the Hunter’s skill that Lin Wu had yet to learn.
Maya didn’t dare move, asking, "NPC or player?"
"I hope it’s a player," Lin Wu responded.
"Why?"
"So I can file a complaint," Lin Wu said.
Inwardly, Maya gave a thumbs up to Lin Wu, admiring the uniqueness of his thought process—it was truly rare in this world.
Maya, holding an assault rifle, unleashed five burst shots into the bamboo grove, but no response came.
Lin Wu lamented, "Conserve ammo." After switching to Outpost Card, there were only fifteen rifle bullets left at home, and he had given five to the team heading to the mountains.
Just then, a shadow darted towards the entrance, Lin Wu fired but missed the target. The sound of footsteps ascending stairs quickly faded away.
"They’ve run off, let’s get the lock open," Lin Wu said.
Maya nodded and walked a couple of steps forward. Seeing that Lin Wu wasn’t following, she turned around to find him using Stealth with a pistol in hand, creeping toward the exit and lying on the ground. Maya immediately understood Lin Wu’s intentions.
Maya went to the door lock to tackle the Sudoku puzzle. She had just moved two pieces when she heard a noise and turned back to see a dwarf collapsed at the entrance of the passage. Lin Wu stood up from the ground, Corpse Looting with a sneer, "Heh, trying to compete with me... No way?"
So poor? There was only a dagger. Although the dagger was of high quality, Lin Wu was not interested; after all, any dagger would do for stabbing.
By this time, Maya had unlocked the Sudoku and the door was slowly opening inward and to the sides. Maya saw the familiar white of a laboratory and the bright lights within.
Suddenly, a round canister grenade was thrown out. Maya’s reflexes kicked in and she kicked the canister away. The grenade struck the stone wall and fell into the pool. Maya dove to the side and hit the deck as the grenade exploded, sending water and shrapnel flying.
Gunfire then erupted, and countless bullets streamed out from inside the door. Maya crawled quickly, taking cover behind the bamboo next to the stone wall, and catching her breath, she said, "No wonder there are no zombies in this area."
