Chapter 440: Chapter 229 Splitting Forces

Next to Maya, a stone turned out to be a disguised external speaker, from which a voice said, "Invader, please identify yourself."

There was room for negotiation? Lin Wu reached Maya’s side and saw the wound on her thigh continuously bleeding; even after applying a bandage, it could only slow down the rate of bleeding.

Remaining vigilant, Maya had Lin Wu help with the bandaging while he responded to the other party’s question, "We are agents from the Fortress."

The other party said, "Please provide the security code."

Your dad’s ass! Don’t you know that the guy who knew the security code already got taken out by you? Lin Wu helped Maya stand up, retreating while saying, "My name is Nightmare, from the security department of Blue Star Fortress a thousand years in the future. As for the security code, hold on, let me check. Don’t shoot, don’t come out, else you’ll be injured by my Dark Matter Cannon."

The other party didn’t respond, and the door that had been opened began to close slowly after reaching its fullest extension.

Maya conjectured that this mission was similar to Laboratory A6. If it were two regular players, the encounters would be less stressful. However, for an agent like Nightmare from the Fortress, the situation was significantly harsher. Most infuriating was that the system classified the two regular players, Lin Ma and Nightmare, who teamed up to enter the area, as Fortress agent teammates, triggering a task of Fortress agent level.

Post medical reforms, injuries felt incredibly real. Maya was bleeding but not losing life; when she stepped down with her injured left leg, blood would spray out. Lin Wu had to carry her by the left arm and around the waist, retreating on one leg to the passage stairs.

In such a state, it was impossible to make it back alive, but fortunately, Shadow specialized in Combat Medicine. For safety, Lin Wu carried Maya on one shoulder to the platform at the fork in the road. Carry or piggyback? Out of the question—Maya was much heavier than Seru, and with the backpack and weapons, Lin Wu would be out of breath just climbing a few steps.

Gasping for breath was a minor issue; wounding Maya’s pride was a major concern.

At the fork in the road, Maya called out via her headset, "Calling base, calling base."

Stone replied, "Base received." He was always dead serious when communicating with Maya.

Maya said, "I need Combat Medicine."

Stone activated the command center’s transfer function, connecting to Emerald Feather’s headset. According to the description of Combat Medicine, Emerald Feather, as a doctor, would remotely instruct and assist Maya in self-rescue, such as how to stop bleeding and how to use medication. Naturally, the game simplified this process since Emerald Feather wasn’t a real-life general practitioner.

Combat Medicine treatment began, progress bar at 1%, and Maya’s bleeding instantly stopped while both sides maintained communication. They had to speak every three minutes; otherwise, the progress bar would be interrupted. The content of the conversation didn’t matter. "Have you eaten?" "Yes." That’s good enough.

Lin Wu sat leaning against the wall, watching the fresh blood on his clothes slowly refresh, "Whose fault is it when summer comes?"

Maya didn’t understand, "What do you mean ’whose fault’?"

Lin Wu said, "Who does the laundry?" It’s your blood; I’ve stained your clothes, so theoretically, it should be your fault.

Maya was both amused and resigned, "There’s a thing called a laundry room in buildings."

Lin Wu said, "After building it all, both the Meteorological Station and Sawmill bases don’t have any storage slots."

Maya commented, "It seems we need to open another sub-base."

Lin Wu said, "Open another sub-base? With the 12 personnel from Nightmare and 5 personnel used for the alliance with the Meteorological Station, another 5 for a sub-base. What, use the remaining two for research?" Maybe by the time the game shuts down, we still wouldn’t have unlocked much of the so-called technology. Now that I think about it, this research facility is a real trap.

Avoiding this topic, Maya said, "One dead and one injured on our side, it’s got me worried about Shana."

Lin Wu tried to contact Shana without success, so he called out to Stone, "Inform Shana, her husband is dead; tell her not to die too."

Stone asked, "You alright?"

"I’m fine."

"I figured as much, a scourge for a thousand years."

"What do you mean? Are you trying to monopolize Wai?" Lin Wu said in shock, "No, you want to monopolize Maya."

Unable to help herself, Maya grabbed a charm hanging outside her backpack and threw it at him. Lin Wu’s thinking was straightforward—am I alive, and you’re unhappy about it? Why? You want Wai, but as Wai’s owner, if I die, naturally, Wai would be gone too. So the only remaining interest was Maya. Despite it being a joke and several steps of reasoning, Lin Wu’s mind could leap to such conclusions instantly.

Therefore, it was very hard for Maya and others to keep up with Lin Wu’s thought process.

"Wai? Hmph, Little Knife took him to play." What temporary guardian—he had only patted the dog a few times. Stone asked, "How’s Maya doing?"

Lin Wu inquired, "How’s it going?"

Maya knew what Lin Wu was asking, "1%, estimated treatment time: 5 hours."

"Damn!" Lin Wu was startled, "5 hours?"

Maya helplessly said, "Treatment time doubles for a general practitioner, and remote medical treatment time doubles again."

Seeing Maya show emotions of feeling like a burden, Lin Wu said, "No worries, being able to spend five hours with you in this pitch-darkness is something truly joyful."

Maya didn’t buy it, "Ha."

Stone’s voice came through, "Horse Soul broke his leg, currently undergoing remote treatment. Other than that, their team is making normal progress."

Lin Wu curiously asked, "How did he break it?"

Stone replied, "He didn’t lift his feet high enough while walking; there was a tree root on the forestry path, tripped over it, and his knee hit a stone."

Emerald Feather asked Maya, "Maya, are you okay?"

Maya replied, "Thank you, I’m fine."

Emerald Feather switched channels, "Horse Soul, you okay?"

Horse Soul responded, "Doing alright."

After ending the call with the base, the two of them sat leaning against the wall in darkness, with only the flashlight Lin Wu was holding to his chest shedding a bit of light. Lin Wu suddenly had an idea, "If we hang a bottle on your leg and the blood you lose is fed back into your body through a tube, would you still die then?"
