Chapter 423: Chapter 223 Night Raid
The second day of spring’s second month marked our next workday, where the task was to ravage the second floor of the shopping mall and dismantle all electronics. However, productivity was notably low as a few of the girls chatted about wedding plans while working, with poor Peanut tagging along, notebook in hand. He constantly checked previous plans, crossing them out and drafting new ones.
Lin Wu, who typically slacked off at work, found himself having to scavenge full force, teaming up with Horse Soul for a dynamic duo. Lin Wu certainly wouldn’t request them to work diligently; he’d be doomed if he got dragged into their circle. If you’re not satisfied, then join in and change it all.
Peanut sneaked back, lamenting, "The background music alone needs five types, for the entrance, before the vows, after the vows, the groom’s speech, and the kiss. We also need to adjust for wind force and direction for each segment, and configure the sun’s position to provide a shadow layout. They’re currently discussing trees, turf, and pathways, and next on the agenda are flower gates—how many and what kinds of flowers. I still need to research what each flower represents and write the master of ceremonies’ script."
Peanut was despondent, "I thought making endless concessions would suffice."
Lin Wu consoled, "Your talent is evident, Peanut. If it were too simple, they wouldn’t need you to handle it personally."
Horse Soul wholeheartedly agreed, "See, now you can openly slack off while we do all the heavy lifting."
"Peanut." Shana called over the earpiece.
Peanut, resigned, said, "I’m on it."
Lin Wu stopped him, "Hold on, quick question—are you a husband by any chance, and if so, who’s your wife?"
Peanut froze, checked the system, and said, "Dashuang." He chided himself for forgetting who his spouse was in less than 24 hours.
As the day shift ended in the evening, they returned to base through the sewers. Maya walked behind with Lin Wu, bringing up the mission regarding the eradication of the Alliance by Nightmare: "She needs a sniper with about 20 .50 caliber rounds. The target is 3-5 NPC military personnel."
Lin Wu said, "From what she described, the Alliance Shelter should be underground."
Maya confirmed, "Exactly. Therefore, Nightmare needs to infiltrate the shelter to determine its depth, and eventually use a ground drill bomb to destroy it."
Lin Wu suggested, "Destroy the shelter? Won’t all the resources be wasted? Couldn’t we kill the NPCs, loot the shelter, and then blow it up?"
Maya replied, "I haven’t encountered armed NPCs before, so I’m not sure about their strength."
Lin Wu said, "You take Forest Wolf, I’ll take Silencer. With mid to long-range collaboration, we’ll take out as many as we can. After all, Shana and the others can handle the mall looting."
Maya responded, "I’ll need high ground to use Forest Wolf effectively." A signal tower would be ideal to avoid the risk of noise. Lin Wu using Forest Wolf wouldn’t have to worry as much, since zombies can’t keep up with him anyway.
Lin Wu noted, "I’ll scout the situation with a drone later."
Maya pulled out a Left County map and after searching, said, "It’s about 5 kilometers from our base, near Route 3." Route 1 went through Left County’s downtown, Route 2 along Left County’s riverside, and Route 3 through Shuixi.
Lin Wu checked the map, "Shall we drive there?"
Maya suggested, "Driving there is risky. There’s a significant number of zombies on the roads, and a car can’t take many hits. I propose we take the waterway, following the river from the backdoor and make a turn to the signal tower near the train station. Here."
Lin Wu reckoned, "The signal tower is about four hundred meters from the train station."
Maya replied, "That’s fine by me. If we drive, you drop me off by the signal tower. After the job’s done, come back to the signal tower to pick me up. Your driving skill is the real challenge of this mission."
Lin Wu contended, "Walking five kilometers in the river, doubling for the return trip... No. That’s just the linear distance; it could actually be 20 kilometers. Walking 20 kilometers in water would take at least five hours, plus the potential distraction from zombie harassment, it would consume a whole day. Driving would take just five minutes."
Maya asked, "Can you ensure the car won’t get wrecked on the road?"
Lin Wu admitted, "I cannot." Previously, when they claimed the Sawmill as their base, the lead vehicle’s durability plummeted from 100% to 20%, even with Stone, the best driver, at the wheel. You can’t drive too slow or the neighboring zombies will cling to the doors. Drive too fast, and it becomes hard to dodge zombies, not to mention the wrecked cars that frequently spawn as obstacles on the road.
Maya was caught between laughter and tears. Lin Wu was essentially saying he couldn’t guarantee the car’s safe arrival, but he was determined to drive, not walk. They could certainly loot, but without excessive exertion; after all, profits were uncertain.
...
The darkness of night significantly impairs zombie vision. On a cloudy night that obscured the moon and stars, a normal player standing three meters from a zombie might go unnoticed by the undead—though players might not be able to see the zombies either.
It was a full moon tonight, and moonlight bathed the earth. At eleven o’clock, a well-rested Lin Ma headed to the eastern parking area to launch a drone. The drone’s maximum flight distance was 5 kilometers, which was precisely within range of the train station.
The two sat on a large log in the eastern parking area while Lin Wu reported the situation, "The site covers an area of four hundred square meters, with the sealed entrance to the east. The central area is the waiting hall, leading out to the platforms to the south, and to the west, the staff’s offices. Infrared scans detected no human presence. However, there were surprisingly few zombies near the train station, only one regular zombie within a fifteen-meter radius. Add up all the zombies within thirty meters, and it’s just over a dozen, all of them regular zombies."
