Chapter 357: Chapter 197: Counter-Espionage_3

Maya said, "You watch from the top of the signal tower, and I’ll stay at the bottom."

Lin Wu asked, "You’re going too?"

"Of course," Maya glanced at Lin Wu and explained, "It’s a big deal."

Lin Wu asked, "Do you trust Nightmare?"

Maya replied, "Although Nightmare doesn’t like you, she doesn’t hate you that much. She has proven herself to be trustworthy through multiple collaborations."

Lin Wu said, "But she betrayed her companion."

"It’s different with the system," Maya explained. "Unless it’s a whole team, there’s basically no trust between Fortress agents. If her companion tried to kill her in the name of cooperation, both of us wouldn’t be surprised. Moreover, even if your suspicion has some merit, you’ll still go."

Lin Wu understood, "You’re not so sure either, so you want to come with me."

Maya didn’t argue, "If you want to go, you must trust Nightmare. Don’t use someone you doubt, and don’t doubt someone you use. If you doubt Nightmare, then don’t go, or you’ll end up in trouble on both ends, and there might be mistakes in the assassination due to trust issues. I’ll deal with and solve any situations where Nightmare might not be trustworthy as much as possible."

Maya said, "In my opinion, Nightmare can achieve a win-win situation by cooperating with us. Her accomplice is probably Nightmare, and besides fearing your attributes and skills, he’s probably also worried about Nightmare collaborating with us for the mission. It’s pointless for Nightmare to kill you, as you haven’t marked her as an enemy."

Lin Wu nodded, "My death wouldn’t benefit Nightmare much; on the contrary, she won’t find anyone trustworthy to help her with difficult tasks in the future."

Maya said, "Go sleep, we’ll leave after you wake up."

...

At 3 a.m., after they were ready, the two waved goodbye to Peanut at the guard post and left from the back door, heading west along the river. The river was a special route with no zombie tide, fewer zombies, but slower progress and prone to making noise in the water.

Maya instructed Lin Wu on how to walk in the water, such as not lifting his feet and stepping with the heel first, then once firm, stepping forward with the other foot. If they encountered a Titan, the two would find a way around it, experiencing some minor incidents along the way. The short four hundred meters took them an hour to traverse.

Upon arrival, Lin Wu scouted and confirmed the signal tower and the information about the temporary base given by Nightmare were true. Maya and Lin Wu went over the plan again—she would remain on standby 50 meters away from the signal tower by the bridge, which was in the 20-meter safety zone on the left side of the temporary base. If any stragglers fled, they would inevitably head towards the temporary base. Lin Wu’s task involved no complexity; he just needed to keep watch on the signal tower.

If Nightmare had deceived Lin Wu, Maya would be in danger. But Maya didn’t care; she was willing to pay for her own misjudgment.

Even though Maya said this, Lin Wu was still very cautious during his stealth approach. He had already surveyed the nearby area with a drone and hadn’t detected any ambush players. The temporary base was protected by the system, so its internal information was unknown. Lin Wu was still confident that as long as he didn’t trigger any traps, it wouldn’t be easy for anyone to ambush him.

He safely reached the bottom of the signal tower and climbed the straight ladder to the maintenance area. The signal tower was a structure specifically provided by the system for players to overview the entire area. Lin Wu took his monocular and checked the surroundings before lying on the ground, focusing on the temporary base.

The temporary base was a bicycle rental shop with two units. One had its rolling door shut, and the other opened, with a System bonfire inside, clearly serving as the base’s living room.

After quietly waiting for an hour, Maya encountered some minor issues on her end. Fortunately, she was alert enough and with her Silent Crossbow, she managed the small crisis. She also moved to a safer position according to the movements of nearby zombies and camouflaged herself.

From his position above, Lin Wu could see only an uneven grassy area. He could only detect Maya when she moved. She pulled off a piece of turf to lie on the ground, covering herself with vegetation, leaving only a slit for her eyes.
