Chapter 358: Chapter 179 Trust?
At seven in the morning, Blood Meng walked from the inner quarters to the campfire and sat down on a worn wooden chair. She reached over to the base’s water supply to fill a cup, poured the water into an iron pot, and added two sticks of firewood to the campfire to start boiling the water. The base’s water supply was a system benefit that provided players with a certain amount of clean water. It wasn’t enough for taking baths or watering plants, but it was sufficient to make a couple of cups of tea and coffee. However, this benefit would also be canceled in the summer.
The temporary base’s sentry post was at the back door. Nightmare finished his shift at the sentry post, went to the living room, put a teabag into his thermos, and after Blood Meng poured in boiling water, they chatted idly. Nightmare came out of the inner quarters, walked out of the base, stood at the edge of the base’s safe zone to stretch and loosen his limbs, and turned his head to survey the surroundings.
Nightmare called over to Nightmare at the campfire and said, "When he leaves the base, he might wear a forehead guard, so the best time to assassinate him is when he returns to the base. The moment he steps into the base, all his items will be confiscated by the warehouse, and that’s the best opportunity to assassinate him."
Blood Meng said, "The signal tower can only see part of the back yard and the western parking lot. What if he doesn’t take those two routes?"
Nightmare replied, "That’s why there are three of us." Three people taking turns on duty would always manage to catch him.
Blood Meng said, "We get more skill books than ordinary players. Have you ever thought that we could also train our attributes and skills?"
With his hands around a cup of hot tea, Nightmare said, "It’s useless, I’ve tried it, can’t withstand it." They needed to complete missions, which were very dangerous, sometimes requiring self-sacrifice to succeed. Training attributes and skills meant that they would have many more concerns during operations.
After thinking for a moment, Blood Meng realized that it was indeed unrealistic. Beyond the dangerous nature of their tasks, they also needed to collect various materials to make weapons and tools. The best strategy would be to affiliate with a big base to share resources and complement each other. But both Southward Town in Right County where Blood Meng was and Southward Town in Left County where Nightmare was lacked any notable big bases.
The only exceptional one in North Town of Left County was Shadow, which had successfully established itself in Left County. Blood Meng looked at Nightmare; this guy wasn’t just planning on simply assassinating Lin Wu— he also wanted to eliminate his biggest rival: Nightmare. After eliminating Nightmare, his next target would be herself. Unlike ordinary players, the ten Fortress agents were in intense competition. Only interests, not emotions, could keep them united.
For Blood Meng, her main competitors were also Nightmare and Nightmare. Currently, Nightmare was the strongest among the three due to points earned from the second expedition. Next was Nightmare, followed by herself, Blood Meng. The thought of this reminded Blood Meng of Lin Wu—if he hadn’t killed her three times, her points would surely not be lower than theirs.
Why shouldn’t she cooperate with Shadow? Compared to Nightmare, she had some interactions with Lin Wu and could actually negotiate with him. It was just that her safe house was in Southward Town in Right County, so collaborating with Shadow wouldn’t greatly benefit her. Perhaps, after killing Lin Wu, she could betray Nightmare and Nightmare, letting the Shadow People take revenge for Lin Wu.
"Let’s go," Nightmare stood up.
Blood Meng set down her cup and after checking the magazine of Forest Wolf, she hung it back on the rifle rack. Although she had been killed multiple times by Lin Wu in the expedition instance, Blood Meng had still earned a fair amount of points, which she, along with Nightmare and Nightmare, had used to exchange for a .50 caliber sniper rifle.
Switching to the sniper rifle was not solely because of Lin Wu, as the rifles had a wide range of applications in their missions. The .50 caliber bullets were advantageous in eliminating heavy targets.
Encountering an isolated zombie on their way delayed Nightmare, who fell a step behind to deal with it. Blood Meng reached the signal tower first. Without much thought, she climbed alternately with her hands and Nightmare followed close behind. Nightmare, with her cup of red tea, stood in the safety zone, scanning the area with the corner of her eye but not spotting Lin Wu and his group. She didn’t see them during her night watch the previous evening either. However, based on her knowledge of Lin Wu, she believed he would definitely come, and he was likely already here.
Blood Meng climbed to a higher point and stopped to look around, taking in the breathtaking view with the breeze playing with her hair, refreshing her spirit.
"Keep going up before you look," Nightmare said.
Blood Meng, a bit annoyed at Nightmare for interrupting her good mood, didn’t say anything. She quickly climbed to the top and reached the maintenance area. As she straightened up, Blood Meng was shocked to see her life drop to almost nothing, and pain shot through her head. Before she could turn around, her vision darkened, and when it brightened again, she was at the resurrection checkpoint.
Lin Wu grabbed Blood Meng’s body and dragged it backwards, trying to move her aside to prevent Nightmare from discovering her. Nightmare, through the maintenance area’s metal grid, realized something was wrong and looked up to see Lin Wu. Lin Wu dropped the body, stood at the ladder entrance with the Silencer, and shattered the forehead guard of Nightmare, who was just 3 meters away. Nightmare immediately grasped both sides of the ladder and rapidly slid down with his feet hooked around its edges, embracing the ladder.
At that moment, Lin Wu made an epic mistake. The first bullet was a Quick Gunner’s Lock Head. By the time the second bullet locked on and he pulled the trigger, Nightmare had already moved beyond the 3-meter distance, making the shot go astray. The third shot missed as well, as Nightmare had slid down more than 10 meters. Lin Wu emptied his magazine, uncertain whether he hit his target, and immediately drew out the Silencer.
Nightmare had already landed. Lin Wu aimed and fired. Nightmare rolled to the left side to dodge a bullet, infuriating Lin Wu, who raised his hair upright, racked the bolt, propped the rifle on the railing and fired downwards, but Nightmare dodged again.
