Chapter 356: Chapter 197: Counter-espionage_2
Lin Wu: "I suggest you all evacuate quickly, the sun is about to set."
Maya walked to the window, glanced out, and estimated there were 10 minutes till sunset, then ordered, "Everyone stop working and gather in the conference room; prepare to evacuate."
Horse Soul: "The barbecue will be waiting for you to come back."
...
In the two days since the main base was established, nobody had really rested as everyone was trying to figure out ways to expand our means of resource gathering, and many attempts were made. Tonight, pouring good wine, everyone gathered around the barbecue grill and ate and drank to their heart’s content.
Horse Soul found a flat, long stone slab, started a fire underneath it, and placed marinated slices of meat on the slab, which sizzled enticingly, making one’s mouth water.
The oldest among them, Stone, wasn’t even thirty-eight, barely qualifying as young. Once the atmosphere was lively, Peanut started off with a stand-up comedy routine that earned applause from everyone. Su Shi performed magic tricks, and although Lin Wu spotted a flaw, he kept it to himself, also earning applause and whistles.
The group started playing drinking games, guessing dice, playing rock-paper-scissors, and even played the Zombie Kill game invented by Little Knife.
This was a Zombie Tribe where two humans were hiding among the tribe with zombie identities, winning by eliminating the two human zombies.
Players who got the Exploding Carnage identity could take out themselves and another player at any time. Those with the Screamer identity had no voting power, but they could revive one eliminated player during the night once during the entire game.
Titan was the most violent player; anyone who voted for him during the day would have to die at night.
There were two Frenzy cards, one real and one fake; the two cardholders could switch identities at night. If the one with the real card was voted out or killed, both would be eliminated. The one with the fake card could survive an attempt on their life.
There were also many identities for human players.
A Stone Card, once revealed, would protect the holder from death for two turns, but if only one human was left, they would die outright.
With a Lin Wu Card, the holder could kill two zombies every night.
Lucky holders of a Little Knife Card, upon being eliminated or dying, could take a zombie out with them.
An Emerald Feather Card, once revealed, meant the holder could not be voted out or killed, unless they were the last human standing.
A Horse Soul Card could deflect an exile once.
With a Maya Card, apart from killing zombies at night with humans, the holder could also verify one zombie’s identity.
Anyone with a Shana Card during the daytime exile vote would be banished with one vote; more than one vote meant they’d not be banished.
Players with a Su Shi Card could marry a zombie at night, forcing it to become human, and the zombie would get a human card.
Peanut Card was the only ordinary human card, because Little Knife had not yet thought of a special ability.
Gradually, everyone became somewhat fatigued, some looking up at the bright moon, some washing their stinky feet by the river, some feeding Wai with wine, or continuing to eat the barbecue.
The moon was like a jade plate, casting its light on the earth, illuminating the sky. Gazing at the moon, everyone couldn’t help but think of home. Lin Wu grabbed a plate of barbecue and lay on top of a large log in the western parking area, eating the barbecue, sipping red tea, and watching both the moon and the swath of white clouds near the moon.
Wai lay quietly beside Lin Wu on the log. Lin Wu looked at Wai, "What to do, huh? If you really stick with me for a year or so, and the game ends, you’ll be gone. It’s all right for you; you’ll be gone swiftly, but where can I find another dog like you that doesn’t shed, doesn’t need to eat, and listens so well to replace you?"
Lin Wu turned his head and continued to look at the sky, "Isn’t it the same between people? No matter how much we like each other, there comes a day when we have to part. We must cherish every day and live a happy life." With those words, he extended his fist, "Punch it."
Wai reached out his paw and touched fists with Lin Wu. Lin Wu smiled, knowing that he could never find a replacement for Wai. In the game, if Wai died, there would be Respectful Wai, and if Respectful Wai died, there would be Reverent Wai, and after Reverent Wai, there would be Venerable Wai. But what about after the game ended? Perhaps it was better to die once before the game ended and say farewell to Wai.
Strange? Why was he feeling a bit melancholic today and being so sentimental? It seemed he still missed home, missed Blue Star, missed friends, and even the milk tea shop he frequented. It was just that he didn’t want to admit it to himself.
Stone disrupted Lin Wu’s sentimentality, "Hey, someone’s looking for you."
Though the name wasn’t called and there were ten people in the base, strangely, Lin Wu knew he was being summoned. When one becomes familiar with another person after prolonged interaction, there’s no need to say the name; speaking directly lets the other person know they’re being addressed.
Lin Wu, full of questions, went to the command post and picked up the walkie-talkie, "Who’s this?"
"Nightmare."
"Oh?"
Nightmare: "Someone over here wants to kill you, and I want half."
Lin Wu: "I can’t even get out; I don’t believe anyone can get in."
Nightmare: "We already know you’re in the Sawmill, three hundred meters west of the Sawmill is a signal tower. There’s a bicycle rental store near the river by the signal tower, that’s our temporary base. From eight in the morning to eight at night, two armed guards work on the signal tower. You only get one chance every three days, and I’m not working tomorrow."
Lin Wu: "You’re not setting me up, are you?"
Nightmare: "Think about it yourself, I want half."
Lin Wu: "Why should I give you half?"
Nightmare: "That’s settled then, goodbye."
Lin Wu walked out of the factory area, leaned against the wall looking toward the signal tower, and strolled up to the lookout tower where Maya was on duty, replacing someone. Lin Wu sat down on a chair next to her and repeated what had been said. Maya took her eyes off the scope and sat down with her gun next to Lin Wu, thinking for a long time, "Eight in the morning is the chance for assassination. At eight at night it’ll be difficult to sneak up to the signal tower without being discovered."
