Chapter 355: Chapter 197 Counter-Espionage
This discovery replenished Shadow Base with gasoline and medical packs. But this was merely the beginning, after all, the place is referred to as a ’warehouse’ on the map, and the truly valuable items should be on the first floor.
The main entrance to the warehouse was large enough for heavy trucks to enter, with a simple layout inside: a 10-meter-wide road ran through the center, flanked by goods warehouses. Several vehicles and mechanical equipment were placed on the 10-meter-wide road, mainly common trucks and forklifts. Each warehouse on the left and right had two large rolling shutter doors, through which one could enter the interior of the warehouses.
On the second-floor meeting room, Maya looked at the paper fire escape map on the table and information provided by Scout Lin Wu, gaining a rough understanding of the warehouse’s layout.
Shana stood to the side, pointing at the map, "At the end of the road there’s a car wash—there should be a small door there. We’ll check out the car wash by walking down the corridor on the second floor to see if it can be utilized."
After a day’s effort, the number of zombies in the second-floor corridors had significantly decreased. Shadow players worked in groups of two or three, coordinating to clear each room of zombies and resources. Seeing the second floor being thoroughly searched, the two Deputy Commanders shifted their attention to the first floor.
Maya said, "This is an open area. Since it’s indoors, our Sentries can’t provide fire support. I think there are a lot of zombies in the warehouse area. The best method to take it over would be to establish a sub-base. I agree with you, we can selectively occupy the car wash at the back and the sentry booth at the front."
While they talked, Lin Wu, who had gone to scout the first floor, returned to the meeting room and reported to the two commanders, "There’s a large number of zombies on the road inside the warehouse, but I didn’t find any Titans."
Maya nodded, "As we guessed, Titans normally don’t appear inside buildings."
Lin Wu said, "I disagree."
Maya said, "Under normal circumstances."
Lin Wu said, "The last time at the supermarket base, a Titan spawned."
Shana added from the side, "Where you are, it’s never ’normal’."
Lin Wu was speechless.
Maya said, "Continue."
Lin Wu said, "The road is ten meters wide with large warehouses on either side, each with two doors. All four doors are either damaged or destroyed but have openings that can be used to enter and exit."
Maya said, "You’ve reported this before."
Lin Wu, pointing to a location in the warehouse on the fire map, "There are Night Demons, definitely more than one."
"Oh?" the two women looked down at the fire map.
The main entrance of the first-floor warehouse was wide open. During the day, the first half of the 10-meter-wide road was very bright, while the latter half was much darker. Without the illumination of lights, the insides of the large warehouses on either side must be pitch dark.
Lin Wu added, "I walked around the exterior walls of the two large warehouses, and I found that there were only a few ventilating holes at the top. There are no windows, no small doors."
"A 15-meter-high warehouse covering tens of thousands of square meters is engulfed in darkness, day and night," Shana looked at Lin Wu, "Are you sure about the Night Demons?"
Lin Wu nodded.
Shana said, "With Night Demons, we can’t fight."
Maya said, "Every place with Night Demons hides unique secrets and abundant resources."
Lin Wu tried to persuade, "We can’t fight them." Lin Wu was well aware of the strength of the Night Demons. Currently, Shadow Base’s ammunition was scarce, and for the players to enter a dark place teeming with an unknown number of Night Demons was extremely dangerous."
Maya said, "Normally we definitely can’t fight, but we can lower the density of zombies by establishing a sub-base and taking advantage of the unlimited bullet rule to set up a safe zone."
Shana objected, "Sentries are typically 15 meters high, and the first floor of the warehouse is 15 meters high. Whether we occupy the car wash or the sentry booth, it’s impossible to establish a Sentry Card." The noise made by a Sentry firing is very slight, and killing zombies even reduces the Threat Value. Without a Sentry Card, there are no Sentries. Given the density of zombies on the first floor, without the powerful fire support of a Sentry, it’ll be difficult to rapidly decrease the zombie population.
Maya didn’t refute Shana’s opinion because she knew she was right. Under normal circumstances, Maya would have temporarily given up on the first floor of the warehouse, but the presence of Night Demons had piqued Maya’s interest in the warehouse. What to do? Of course, Maya wouldn’t forcefully attack the warehouse, as even in darkness, Lin Wu might not be able to defeat the Night Demons.
Lin Wu came up with a bad idea, "We could set bombs on the second floor to blow open the ceiling of the first-floor warehouse."
This was a good plan but required bombs. Creating bombs needed ammunition packs, and a lot of them to achieve the goal.
Shana recalled something, "Lin Wu and I went to the mountain Sentry Card once. We speculated that if it could be occupied as an Outpost Card, perhaps it could provide artillery support. There are two large-caliber howitzers at the Sentry Card."
"Really?"
Shana said, "Not sure. But it wouldn’t be meaningless to station two brand-new howitzers in the deep forest, would it? The Outpost Card also mentioned that seizing certain key facilities could enable them to provide fire support."
After weighing the options for a while, Maya said, "Lin Wu, go and take another look, see if there are any facilities we can use, or terrain, or something else."
minutes later, Lin Wu’s voice came through the headset, "Took down a Night Demon."
Before Maya could ask about the situation, Lin Wu’s voice was heard again, "Emerald Feather, the patient is about to die, hurry back to the base’s medical room."
Maya asked, "Are you injured?"
"Took a bite." Lin Wu added, "It caught me off guard, I’ll come back for revenge later." A single bite caused heavy bleeding; he could only bandage himself and take painkillers to tough it out back to the base. Luckily, the base was next door, or else survival would have been uncertain.
