Chapter 352: Chapter 196: The Secret Room
The open-plan office had two doors connecting to the corridor, with over a dozen zombies entering from the front and rear entrances and gathering near the fish tank. The fish tank was merely 5 meters away from the office’s main door.
Sentry Shana reported, "Quite a few zombies have gone up to the second floor by the stairs next to the main entrance." There was an outdoor staircase beside the storage area that led directly to the second-floor hallway.
In a low voice, Maya asked, "How many?"
"What?" It was too quiet, and she didn’t hear clearly. But Shana guessed what Maya was asking, "More than 20, with at least 1 Frenzy and 2 Screamers."
Lin Wu, who was observing through the gap in the door, wore a headset and heard Shana’s message, so he gestured with his hands. From the balcony, Maya had a clear view, "Not that many."
Shana: "There are."
Maya gestured toward the hallway to indicate that the number of zombies in the corridor had increased, they simply hadn’t entered the office yet. She warned Lin Wu to be careful.
At this moment, the zombies that had entered the open-plan office had lost their target, but they didn’t leave. Instead, they scattered and went about their own business. Some roamed around the open-plan office, and a few made their way to the hallway. Others approached the windows, turning their heads to look outside, while some of the lazier zombies stayed near the fish tank. Some even went so far as to lie down, crawling under the desks, seemingly intending to take a nap.
Ha! So that’s how the terrifying zombies came to be. Having witnessed the whole process, Lin Wu was even more certain that the zombies, lacking leadership, did not act uniformly, and there was no regularity in their behavior. What are zombies with leadership? For example, during a zombie tide, some would get separated from the group because they fell behind, and those loitering on the sidewalks could be swept into the group. Once they joined the group, they would enter the zombie tide’s patrol mode.
The behavior logic of zombies was to some extent similar to humans. Some people would lie down rather than stand if they could. Some couldn’t sit still and wandered everywhere. Some, despite the hardship, would maintain their posture just to keep up appearances.
With Maya giving hand signals for direction, Lin Wu headed left, towards the corridor. Utilizing his Wind Stinger and backstabbing moves, he executed zombies stealthily, supporting each dying zombie to prevent noise. On the other side, Peanut, in coordination with Maya’s Repeating Crossbow, approached the zombies stealthily. When the zombies turned their heads, or if another zombie spotted him from the side, Maya would snipe them. Peanut opened his arms to embrace the zombies and laid them gently on the ground.
With such cooperation, the zombies inside the open-plan office were quickly eliminated. Lin Wu leaned against the door, peeking out into the corridor. This was a 50 meters long and roughly 3 meters wide hallway. There were numerous rooms on both sides of the corridor, some with doors ajar, some wide open, and some shut.
From what he could see, both resources and zombies were abundant, and Lin Wu thought it near impossible to clear all the zombies in the corridor. But with the zombies shifting positions, he believed there was a chance to cross the hallway through the two doors of the open-plan office and enter the two rooms across.
After reporting the situation, Maya arranged for Lin Wu to scout freely while she and Peanut gathered resources in the open-plan office. After checking the zombies’ positions again, Lin Wu rolled across the corridor and entered the room opposite. Why roll? It was something he saw in movies, and with such perfect terrain, not rolling just didn’t seem cinematic enough.
This was a conference room with an oval table in the middle, where a decorative artificial mountain was placed—clearly, the company that owned the second floor of the storage facility had some clout. There were only two zombies in the conference room, and it didn’t seem like there were any resources worth scavenging. Three walls surrounded the conference room, and one side had a closed door.
Or was it two? Who knows. Whether sliding doors to the left and right counted as one door or two was anyone’s guess.
These were two doors that looked very upscale, covered in leather with marks of zombie bites and tears. Lin Wu poked his finger through a hole and found hard steel material inside. He then pressed the handle and discovered the door was locked. Lin Wu rolled into the corner, "Calling base."
Shana: "Here."
Lin Wu said, "There should be a key to warehouse 88 inside the base, it’s one I got while scavenging the clothing store. No, it’s just a key, and there was a business card with it that said the bag’s owner was the executive administrator of warehouse 88’s office."
"Hold on," Shana went to rummage through the storage for a while, "There are three keys here in storage. Which one are you referring to?"
Stone grumbled, "I told you to categorize them. Don’t just count items as ’in stock’ when you come back to base, you have to sort them. Tag mission information and items, stating where the items were obtained..."
Lin Wu asked, "How do I block him?"
Shana laughed, "I don’t know either."
Lin Wu said, "Little Knife, knock Stone out and throw him to the farm for compost."
Stone was about to complain more, but Shana gestured for him to endure, "What’s distinctive about the key you’re mentioning?"
"Um..." Lin Wu fell into reminiscence, and after a while, he said, "It looks like a key."
Shana, at a loss for words, asked, "What about the lock you’re facing; does it have any distinguishing features?"
Lin Wu studied the keyhole for a good while, "It needs a key."
Unable to stand it any longer, Maya interjected, "Just bring all three keys over here."
"Oh, right." Shana was terribly embarrassed, "Right away, right away." Why had she suddenly become so airheaded?
Shana headed straight to the western parking lot and, protected by two guards, took the highway and quickly arrived near the warehouse. She went around the main entrance to reach the side door, where Maya was already waiting on the office balcony. Seeing Shana, Maya threw a coil of line, holding onto one end. Shana tied the key package to the line and tossed the coil back to Maya.
