Chapter 334: Chapter 189: Defending the City (Part 2)

At 2:50 a.m., the battle was about to reignite, and the NPCs had withdrawn all the food and items they brought. As the time came, countless zombies surged forward, and a supply drop appeared when half of the zombies had charged in. Group 1 and Group 2 players cut through the zombie horde in the opposite direction.

Powerful assault rifles forged a path, and under the protection of Group 2, Group 1 members took away all the airdrops. A Group 1 member who didn’t manage to get an airdrop shouted, "Who’s got some rifle rounds?"

Immediately, someone traded him several dozen bullets; he used a shotgun and had obtained a rifle from the airdrop. Seeing that the other person was carrying a shotgun, he traded roughly twenty shotgun shells from his backpack in return.

Everyone was selfless, united, and bursting with confidence. Outside of the five teams, there was a sixth group, and that was Lin Wu. Lin Wu was tasked with clearing zombies by the city wall, his blade rising and falling as swiftly as the shots fired from the assault rifles, which also illustrated that the zombie tide was denser than before, and the wall had sustained more damage.

A player who had brought machine gun ammunition went to a machine gun emplacement abandoned by Lin Wu and after a struggle called for help: "Who knows how to reload?" Right away, a player came down from the wall to assist him.

This round of attacks showcased the spirit of mutual aid among players. Even Lin Wu, upon hearing someone needed ammunition, would throw them a gun. Ammunition was a trivial matter; wasting his own precious time killing enemies to trade for it was a significant issue.

Unexpectedly, the original one-minute break had been canceled, meaning the players had no time to clear the zombies that had reached the wall. This was when the mobility team assumed such responsibility. As soon as the airdrop came, someone shouted loudly, "Group 2 Red Team grab the airdrop, Group 3 Blue Team cover!"

"Group 4 Black Team defend the wall."

"Group 5 White Team head out to clear the zombies."

"Group 1 Green Team deal with the Titan."

When someone shouted, those around would echo the call, which clarified the responsibilities among the five groups. With the help of those roaming the walls, Lin Wu’s rate of killing zombies fell, so he turned to focus on the Frenzy. The zombies that broke through the defense lines the most were the Frenzy. Lin Wu divided his skills into two groups; one set was Wind Stinger Stun followed by two headshots. The other set was Wind Stinger Stun and then a slashing execution, doing his best to keep his stamina constantly recovering.

Although he killed many Frenzies, the close combat took its toll, and it wasn’t long before he started bleeding and had to leave the field for treatment. After five minutes of treatment, Lin Wu mixed into the supply drop group and managed to snatch a supply box, which contained some bullets and two infrared-guided missiles.

After reading the instructions, Lin Wu hurried back to the wall and stood at the highest point, aiming the guidance device at the intersection between the tunnel and the subway entrance. A red beam shone continuously for five seconds after which the system broadcasted: "Cruise missile will arrive on the battlefield in two minutes. It will not harm players, so please rest assured."

Lin Wu ran to the sapper’s spot to hand over a building pack and repaired a section of the wall. Not long after he returned to the battlefield, the alarm at excavation site 7 blared continuously. Five cruise missiles landed amidst the zombie horde, instantly clearing the entire open area of zombies, even eradicating those at the wall. Players emerged unscathed from the shockwave, getting to the supply boxes and safely retreating after successfully securing the drops.

This air strike gave the players about twenty seconds of rest.

As time progressed, the pressure of defending the city gradually increased, the costs of grabbing airdrops rose, and in the last two hours, only a little more than 200 players were left while zombies continued to pour out ceaselessly from the two outlets, drowning everyone in despair.

"Wall 2 has been breached!"

A cry rang out, and one wall came crashing down. Fortunately, the mobility team had already taken notice of this wall and immediately filled the gap. Five gunmen formed a firing line to slay the zombies, and soon another ten players joined to stabilize the situation. But no matter how fast they fired, there would never be enough bullets.

After two more rounds, four walls had collapsed, the life of the remaining walls had plummeted, and the players were about to confront the zombies in a final battle without any geographical advantage.

"Titan!"

Lin Wu looked around at the sound; the player formation had broken, and the Titan had reached the wall, where it was pounding on it. Each strike caused the wall to lose 2% of its durability. Not many people were nearby, and most had already gone to fill the breach. Lin Wu went forth with his gun, staggering the Titan with three Lock Head shots up close, then set aside his rifle and lifted two submachine guns, blazing away 80 rounds times two in ten seconds. He seamlessly switched to a shotgun for seven consecutive shots, bringing the Titan to its knees, and then wielded his rifle to finish it off.

The next second, a zombie collided with the wall, bringing it down, and Lin Wu was unable to save it.

Players retreated as they fought, not because they wanted to, but because they had to pursue the zombies that had broken through the defenses. Shortly after the walls collapsed, battles were everywhere - players among zombies and zombies among players, each fighting their own fight. There was no longer a chance to grab airdrop supplies.

Then, the system gave the players a break. At 5:30 a.m., all the zombies retreated. The system broadcasted: "The zombies are gathering all their forces and will launch a final assault against the player defenses in the last hour. Please take this half hour to rest and prepare for the final battle."

At excavation site 7, there were only 130 players left, with Maya and Lin Wu the sole survivors of Shadow.

The two stood side by side, observing the scattered group of people, either sitting or standing, and Lin Wu said, "We can’t hold them back."
