Chapter 335: Chapter 189 Defending the City (Part 2)_2
Maya, wearied and resigned, said, "I really can’t accept this."
Lin Wu replied, "With so few people, we can’t loot the airdrop. Even if the walls stood, our bullets wouldn’t last an hour."
Maya looked at Lin Wu who was puzzled, then turned back to Maya, who said, "Your words just reminded me."
Having said that, Maya shouted, "Hello, everyone, I’m Maya, and we still have a chance to win."
Lin Wu glanced at Maya skeptically, "Really?"
Maya: "Yes."
Lin Wu looked at Maya.
Maya added the second half of her statement: "Let’s try it."
...
Maya’s tactic was to give up on the airdrop and put all 130 people into the laboratory.
First step: Dig a pit, throw the chief engineer into it, and cover it with an iron plate.
Second step: Still digging pits, create an earthen rampart position.
Third step: Assign tiers, with the first tier directly facing the zombies, the second tier arranged layer by layer around the center of the earthen rampart, followed by the third and fourth tiers.
Fourth step: Distribute weapons, giving most of the bullets to the rear tiers.
Fifth step: The last tier should conserve bullets, saving them for Titans and Exploding Carnages.
The overall idea: to create a circular formation, where no one must retreat, and everyone must die at their post. The principle of tier assignment was based on height. Maya volunteered to be in the first tier and only kept 50 assault rifle bullets for herself, donating the rest.
Due to the trust in Maya and the atmosphere of unity from battling all night, everyone rushed into the laboratory and started digging. They used shovels if they had them, weapons if not, and bare hands when they had no other options. With only five minutes left, the chief engineer was thrown into the pit, the iron plate was placed over it, and a tube was left so he wouldn’t suffocate. The players raced against time, desperately heaping the excavated dirt on top.
The earthen rampart had just taken shape when the alarm sounded, and a flood of zombies poured out from two exits. The players, short on time to harden the ground, scrambled onto the rampart, trampling the mud. Due to time constraints, Maya didn’t divide the tiers in detail, but the crowd that squeezed onto the rampart naturally formed tiers.
The zombies quickly surrounded the laboratory and started banging on it. In less than 20 seconds, the walls of the laboratory collapsed, and countless zombies rushed toward the rampart like a hurricane.
"Fire."
Instantly, a barrage of gunfire erupted, and the zombies at the front were shredded to pieces, while those behind them continued their fearless assault. A player tossed his handgun backward and drew a machete to engage in close combat with the zombies.
Soon, the tide of zombies turned into a wall of corpses. As the corpses piled up and were about to overrun the first tier, one minute passed, and the corpses at the bottom began to refresh. At this point, the players in the first tier were faced with a wall of bodies and couldn’t fire their guns; they raised their melee weapons high and swung blindly at the foes before them.
The pressure now fell on the second tier as the zombies trampled the wall of corpses and assaulted them. The second tier switched to melee weapons and the first tier stabbed upward with their weapons, causing the bodies to fall among them, stuffing every gap. The horde trampled the first tier, surpassed the wall of the second tier, and charged at the third tier. However, due to the one-minute refresh mechanism, the zombies weren’t as forceful against the third tier.
Without new corpses, there was no wall of corpses. The bodies outside the first tier refreshed, and the tide of zombies again faced off against the first tier. Maya’s congestion tactic was highly effective.
The so-called congestion tactic is when one man holds the pass against ten thousand enemies. Even if you had ten million people, only a few could attack at a time due to the restrictive terrain. Against a small number of zombies, the armed players, with the enhancement of skills and attributes, had a significant advantage. The downside was that they couldn’t heal wounds. Those with medicine would find a moment to administer it to themselves; those without could only watch their life force ebb away.
Even so, not a soul retreated. Everyone struggled to thrust another knife, swing another stick. The only thing capable of breaking the players’ formation was a titan. Mostly, the last tier of ten people waited quietly, but as soon as a Titan appeared, they would all fire together. Since they were the last tier standing at the highest point of the rampart, they could handle Titans approaching from any direction, often killing them before they even entered the laboratory.
As the wave of zombies relentlessly charged, the number of people in the first echelon began to dwindle until only Maya remained. With her back to the second echelon of players, Maya’s machete danced up and down. Thanks to the efforts of the second echelon, corpses piled up around her, and together with the bodies, they formed a wall of corpses, shielding her from being flanked.
Maya multitasked, biting a bandage to treat and stem the blood from her left hand while her right hand brandished the knife to kill zombies. The endless supply of medicine combined with her powerful swordsmanship made the players behind her admire her to the point of prostration. Her actions also deeply inspired morale; the players defended their ground stubbornly, refusing to retreat even in the face of death. The wave-like zombie siege kept hitting the players, bringing losses every time, but each time they managed to push the zombies back.
The zombies outside were completely stuck in a jam, all the way back to the tunnel, and even the Titan, as dominating as it was, could hardly move an inch due to the squeeze. The final echelon, consisting of Lin Wu and others, targeted the Titan from near to far, without forgetting about the Exploding Carnage.
Lin Wu rummaged through his backpack and took out an infrared guidance device, which he had only used once before. Now, feeling sorry for the zombies that were stuck in place unable to move, he pulled it out.
Two minutes later, five cruise missiles fell, creating an impressive scene. But, as Lin Wu expected, the gap created by the cruise missiles was quickly filled. Some of the zombies caught fire and, after the fire spread for a while, the flames were quickly extinguished. However, the shockwave from the cruise missiles blew away the zombies attacking the echelon, buying time for the players to take medicine. A girl casually pulled Maya by her collar to her side. By this time, half of the second echelon had fallen.
No one knew how long they had been fighting, but as the second echelon fell, Maya moved up to the third echelon. Behind the third echelon was the fourth echelon, which was also the last echelon. When the last echelon ran out of bullets, they each pulled out melee weapons.
At that moment, the sunlight shone upon the earth, causing the zombie wave to pause for half a second, then they all turned and fled towards the tunnel and subway station entrances. In less than two minutes, they had vanished without a trace, leaving behind 30 players at the scene in disbelief.
Screams and shouts filled the sky, and the players embraced each other, jumping in place with their arms around each other’s shoulders.
The system cooperated by giving everyone five minutes to celebrate. After the five minutes, the system broadcasted, "Congratulations to all the Guardians of No. 7 Excavation Site in Future City, you are the only team to have defeated the zombies. Each and every one of you will receive a Warrior Medal."
Entry, Waste City Warrior: Home points increase by 1%.
In addition, there were rewards for instance scores. Surviving players received a 200% bonus to their points, turning 1000 into 3000 after the reward. Players who died received a 150% extra points reward. This score included the points for killing zombies in the final task. Although a Titan was worth only 5 points, it was better than nothing.
The deceased players were all sent back to Waste City, randomly teleported to any location. The next step was time to exchange points for rewards. After the rewards were redeemed, the second expedition closing ceremony would be held.
Not surprisingly, Lin Wu was number one again. No matter how fiercely Maya chopped, she couldn’t outpace the cruise missiles. As the first place, Lin Wu again received a special reward selection.
Lin Wu objected, "Why do I only have 5 options?"
Little White Rabbit suggested, "I recommend that you learn about the specific reward details first. If you’re still not satisfied with choosing one out of five, you can forgo the special reward and use your points to exchange for prizes instead."
One: Immortal Card, retain attributes after death, permanent effect.
Two: Indestructible Card, retain skills after death, permanent effect.
Three: Undying Card, do not lose points after death, permanent effect.
Four: Non-old Card, the longer the survival time, the higher the attribute experience gain rate, up to 50%, reset after death and revival, permanent effect.
Five: No Return Card, can choose a specific location to revive after death, permanent effect.
After reading, Lin Wu looked at Little White Rabbit with disdain, "What kind of trash is this? Am I destined to die? Could you please show some sincerity? Your attitude towards the number one player is very unsatisfactory to me, your champion."
Little White Rabbit asked, "Aren’t you worried about dying?"
Lin Wu replied, "Worried, but do you see any card that makes sense? The Immortal Card that retains attributes? What’s the point of keeping attributes if I lose my skills?"
Lin Wu continued, "The Indestructible Card that retains skills? The Beast Trap counts as a blueprint, not a skill. The drone skill is useful, but where do I find a drone after I revive? Even if I keep the Hunter’s skill, I’d have to start over catching rats. Without the support of attributes, my Wind Stinger is practically handicapped."
Lin Wu scoffed, "What’s the point of the Undying Card that doesn’t deduct points? I’ve never cared about points. And the No Return Card that lets you choose where to revive. Should a newcomer like me have the audacity to go back and be a burden to everyone? You’re a really bad AI, presenting me with a bunch of useless abilities to fool me."
