Chapter 332: Chapter 188 Defense of the City (Part 2)_2
The last act of the second expedition to Waste City was the best reward for the surviving players.
...
In the second hour, the zombies’ assault force diminished significantly, and players orderly looted the airdrops. In this hour, only seven players died, with virtually every hand wielding either an assault rifle or a shotgun, and the city walls were completely repaired. Additionally, the average number of bullets per player had reached 400 rounds.
Everyone knew this was a welfare system ahead of more difficult tasks to come.
Sure enough, in the third hour, the number of zombies returned to the levels of the first hour. Unlike before, Frenzies appeared, and although green Frenzies had no difference in combat strength compared to White Crazy Savages, they were numerous, with one Frenzy for every twenty green zombies.
Three players with flame throwers cleared the way, and a hundred players followed behind them, successfully securing all 70 airdrop crates. On their way back, the flame throwers ran out, and the hundred-strong team fought their way back in retreat. Thanks to their fierce firepower, no zombies could get within 5 meters of them, not even the Frenzies.
Lin Wu didn’t compete for the airdrops this time because he would be overloaded if he did. He held a dagger in his left hand and a submachine gun in his right, setting his left hand as the main. He followed along outside the city walls. A large number of zombies were pounding on the walls, and Lin Wu sneakily stabbed them in the back one by one. The submachine gun in his right hand had a high rate of fire, turning all zombies charging at him head-on into sieves. When the submachine gun jammed, he simply put it down and picked up the shotgun hanging on his chest.
After the shotgun ammo was depleted, he switched to an assault rifle. When the assault rifle ran out of bullets, he would take another assault rifle, a pistol, and a submachine gun from the weapon rack.
In an instant, Lin Wu turned into a storm of blue steel, becoming the most dazzling figure on the scene. As he passed, a swath of zombies fell. Lin Wu didn’t know how many zombies he had killed; he had emptied all the magazines from his firearms and had broken a dagger by the time he retreated back inside the city walls. Another round of airdrops arrived, but Lin Wu had no time to fight for them; he needed to repair his weapons and reload nine guns.
One player brought back a heavy machine gun, hanging ten belts of ammo while installing the heavy machine gun on the city wall. Loading the ammo, he squeezed the trigger, and bullets swept through like a storm, causing a gory mess, impressing everyone with its might, though lacking in accuracy.
"Bro, go down below," a player immediately advised. Machine guns on the wall required precision, but not so much below it. Given the dense zombie population, one could hardly miss as long as they didn’t shoot up into the sky or ground.
Feeling it made sense, the player carried the machine gun eagerly down the wall and began to set it up outside, but was tackled by a Frenzy before he could finish. As he was under the wall, players above had a blind spot and couldn’t support him in time. By the time Lin Wu arrived, he was already dead. However, he had left the heavy machine gun and ammunition belt where he had set it down before trying to install the gun.
"How am I supposed to work this?" Lin Wu fumbled, wondering how to load it.
Regardless, Lin Wu stood before the machine gun, defending himself with his weapons while shouting, "Maya, Maya."
"I’m here." Maya arrived and, without a word, helped Lin Wu set up the machine gun and load it. As they finished, Titans appeared amidst the wave of zombies. Even if there weren’t many Titans, players had an innate fear of them, and cries of alarm rose all around.
The heavy machine gun roared into action, mowing down the fodder in front of the Titans. The Titan charged directly at the heavy machine gun. With .50 caliber bullets and a rate of fire of up to 450 rounds per minute, the machine gun turned the Titan into a lesser being, unable to even complete a roar or motion before being repeatedly staggered by gunfire, eventually crashing down within 10 seconds.
At this point, the players’ arsenal had become more diversified, with grenades and hand grenades making their appearances. During the latter half of this hour, Lin Wu depleted all the heavy machine gun ammo, killing six Titans and countless zombies. Twenty-five players perished in this battle.
In the fourth hour, the system didn’t schedule a rest but continued with high-intensity combat. Players’ ammo was running low, and they had to fight for the airdrops without overwhelming weaponry support like in the first hour, resulting in over a hundred player casualties.
After four hours, 560 players survived, over half of them lost. Seven hours remained until 7 a.m. At this point, most of the players were feeling somewhat exhausted after the excitement.
The system broadcasted considerately: "A three-hour mid-game break. Food and drinks provided for free."
As soon as the announcement ended, NPC staff swarmed in from outside the venue, some carrying tables, others holding food trays, and there were even those carrying a piano. A buffet restaurant was soon set up in the open space outside the laboratory. There was also karaoke, and interested players could take the stage to sing a song.
Unexpectedly, the first to go up was Maya, who introduced herself, "I’m the Deputy Commander of Shadow Base, my name is Maya. I think that the last four hours of combat will be extremely difficult, and I suggest we centralize distribution of personnel and resources."
Everyone looked at each other, remaining silent. Lin Wu stood up to throw shade, "The mission and all come second, as long as everyone’s happy. Or did you think we’d all listen to you?" He looked around, and nobody uttered a word.
Someone said, "That’s a pro."
Someone said, "So arrogant, I don’t like it."
Someone said, "They seem to be in cahoots."
Someone said, "I doubt it, I’ve never seen that guy at Shadow."
Maya said, "I only hope everyone can be happy and successfully complete the mission."
