Chapter 331: Chapter 188 Defend the City (Part 2)
Lin Wu let go of the shotgun, which automatically hung over his shoulder, drew the Beretta pistol from the holster with his right hand, and fired continuously, killing the zombies that attempted to attack the female player from behind. This rare act of heroism by Lin Wu might have been spurred by the atmosphere on-site or the nature of the mission; whatever the reason, tonight all the players were grasshoppers on the same skewer.
The life of Wall 4 dropped by 15%, with dozens of zombies pushing and pounding at its base. Lin Wu picked up the shotgun and with a single blast, a streak of blood splattered, and seven zombies fell instantly. As he walked and fired, Lin Wu cleaned out all the zombies that were a threat to Wall 4. But when he turned around, a large group of zombies charged up again.
At that moment, a player handed over a design he had found to the sapper, who activated a Summoning Skill, and an automated machine gun turret rose outside Wall 15, rotating and attacking any zombies that came close. It also became the zombies’ primary target, even those that were attacking Wall 15 turned back to assault the turret.
"Protect the turret."
"What turret?"
The scene was incredibly chaotic, and those players intent on protecting the turret couldn’t even make it downstairs; they could only watch as the zombies destroyed the turret – the whole process took just about 10 seconds.
"Airdrop."
Lin Wu had only used half of his shotgun ammunition when the second wave of 30 airdrops arrived on cue. With this wave came the Exploding Carnage, which, despite being mixed among the regular zombies, were not slow.
"Out of ammo."
"No ammo, go hand-to-hand."
"Go for the airdrops."
"Let’s go all out."
Shouts and cries echoed nonstop, and Lin Wu along with a group of players charged towards the airdrops 50 meters from the wall. You’d think Dawn had lost its mind, not dropping supplies in the safe zone but instead making all the drops so far from the safety zone.
In addition to the drops, two fighter jets joined the battle. They made low-altitude, strafing runs over the swarm of zombies. Because of this, the Exploding Carnage kept detonating, covering the combat zone in a toxic mist. It not only hindered the players’ advance but also obscured their vision.
No ordinary person could fathom the darkness of Dawn.
players surged forward, and only 20 returned, but they fought their way back. Once they had firearms and ammunition, they grouped in small teams, wielding their weapons to harvest a bloody toll from the zombies. For a moment, this not only stalled the zombies’ assault but also greatly relieved the pressure on the defenders.
However, the mission had only been going for 15 minutes.
A minute’s rest gave players time to clear out the zombies. When the break ended, the horde surged out from tunnels and subway entrances, and without a moment’s breath, the players were thrust back into battle. At the same time, the third airdrop arrived; the number of drops increased again, and players who had run out of bullets charged forward en masse, carving a path through the zombies with melee weapons.
A player inserted an Enhanced Directional Mine into the ground and retreated to press the remote, showering countless steel balls in a 15-meter arc that instantly turned the zombies within its radius into a Blood Mist, a sight quite spectacular to behold. Players who got Molotov Cocktails didn’t rush back either; they lit and threw them, and the resulting explosion from the ignited Exploding Carnage cleared a 10-meter radius in a small mushroom cloud.
There were more handguns than players could count; no need for aiming since there were no distant targets. Either blow a zombie’s head off or be overwhelmed by them. If you got pinned down by a zombie, there was no need to panic—you might have an ally nearby ready to lend a hand at a moment’s notice.
Bravely raiding for airdrops, banding together for the sake of Survival.
The morale of the players surged. Those without bullets, ignoring the timing of the airdrops, banded together to strike out. At one point, they even pushed the frontline to the airdrops’ drop zone. Over 50 marksmen followed to cover them, granting them time to collect just-arrived airdrops. Then both groups teamed up to establish a position on the airdrop line, retreating only after securing the next batch of airdrops.
An hour into the mission, 720 players remained alive, with over 200 injured and retreating for treatment by the medics. The good news was nearly all the players were armed with firearms and had at least 50 rounds of ammunition, with some fiercer players amassing hundreds of rounds for their assault rifles.
Broadcast: "Ten minutes rest, free drinks, and water provided near the lab."
Lin Wu went to get a cup of hot black tea; his weapons rack was loaded with weaponry—shotgun, assault rifle, and submachine gun all hanging from his chest. His backpack was filled with a total of 700 bullets. Indeed, each time there was an airdrop he was among those scrambling for it, almost always managing to secure one, sometimes even reaching a second crate in a more remote location.
Inside the crates, one significant resource was construction materials; one packet could repair 20% of a wall’s durability. During the ten minutes break, players submitted their materials—it wasn’t looking great, with at least four walls at 80% durability, and the rest hovering around 90%.
The players had let too many zombies slip through, dealing a heavy blow to the walls. It wasn’t entirely the players’ fault, though; there were simply too many zombies.
Another issue was the lack of overall strategy. As for players like Lin Wu, who literally had no place left to hang firearms, there were also those who could only fire their little handguns biubiu until they were spent. There was also a lack of coordination in staffing; with 50 crates and 200 people dashing out, for sure some came back empty-handed, and the walls lacking guards suffered greater damage.
Nevertheless, the players’ spirits were still high, their enthusiasm unflagging. It was no longer about winning or losing the mission; it was about having fun. Struggling through two slow quarters, they rarely had a chance to let loose and fight it out with zombies—a perfect release for their stress.
