Chapter 311: Chapter 180 Excavation Site

Having nothing better to do, Maya went to work. And Lin Wu, the wealthy man that he was, naturally disdained manual labor. He found a high point near the library to enter Stealth mode and used a telescope to search for any potential Hunters.

By five in the afternoon, with an hour and a half left before sunset, Maya had already completed a job. She returned and gave a glance at the flagpole, then continued out to work again. Maya really hoped that Shana would lead the team to the supply point in Zone 4—not because she wanted to prove who between herself and Lin Wu was right, but because it would reinforce the collective’s recognition of trust, which was extremely beneficial to their collective living and working.

Lin Wu, on the other hand, didn’t see it as an issue of principle, since he was not the promise maker.

At seven in the evening, Lin Wu left his lookout and returned to the library. The screen in the library displayed that there were 75,000 players remaining; another 4,000 had died in the span of a few hours. Lin Wu and Maya were somewhat perplexed—it seemed a tall order for 30 Fortress Hunters to kill 4,000 people in such a short amount of time.

Then why had 21,000 died in the first few hours? Firstly, it was unknown how many people had not participated in this instance event, such as Stone and Su Shi, who had not shown up, given the severe death penalty. Secondly, it wasn’t certain how many people were in Future City; on average, each major city was allocated 100,000 people, but that was just an average. Lastly, when leaving the starting point, everyone was together, making it easy to be harmed by large-scale destructive traps.

But these 4,000 had indeed died between three and seven o’clock in the afternoon. Lin Wu remembered the images of Mutant Spiders shown by the NPC officer before departure, and also considered the 20% of zombies. Lin Wu guessed that the deaths of the 4,000 were related to the mutant animals and zombies.

Speaking of mutant animals, Maya brought up cockroaches. Cockroaches are champions at resisting radiation in the animal kingdom. Since spiders had mutations, Maya believed mutated cockroaches could appear. Thinking of cockroaches led to thoughts of sewers, and Maya recalled a piece of information from their first expedition: some NPC survivors were hiding in an underground shelter somewhere in the city.

Maya said, "The digging site might be very dangerous."

Lin Wu said, "They don’t dig near the green device by the supply point, and insist on going across zones to dig. Do they still believe that Waste City truly exists?"

Maya said, "It exists with certain artistic processing, but there should be facts like the digging of green devices."

Lin Wu asked, "And the Mutant Spiders?"

Maya said, "Artistic processing."

Lin Wu asked, "What about spending points to buy bullets?"

Maya said, "Game processing."

"Why are you glowering at me?"

"I just have bigger eyes."

"The fog, the fog is coming." Someone inside the library shouted loudly. The people in the library were coming and going, numbering around a thousand, with some having accepted tasks without combat ability but no risk to their lives. However, it seemed that not many had bullets.

Lin Wu and Maya left through the side door and walked to the flagpole to look out. There were no lights, no moon, only a vague expanse a hundred meters away; it was uncertain whether it was fog or not.

"As long as we don’t leave the library, we should be okay, right?" He wasn’t sure if that was correct.

Maya said, "The direction of the fog seems not to be aimed at the supply point, but at the players active outside. Let’s go back to the library to rest, eat dinner, and sleep."

The free food provided by the library wasn’t too bad, but the options were meager. Of course, if one was willing to spend points, they could buy a lobster meal in the restaurant. The dormitory was the same; Lin Wu generously spent 30 points to open a 20-square-meter double room. Those unwilling to pay could only sleep on spring beds laid out in the basement. There was no use complaining since it was free.

Upon entering the room, Lin Wu took off his protective suit. There was no radiation at the library supply point, so he had worn the protective suit for fear of encountering someone he knew.

The double room came with two complimentary packs of instant noodles and two bottles of water. Maya rejected Lin Wu’s suggestion to eat them on the spot, instead putting the noodles and water into her backpack.

The night passed without conversation.

...

The next morning at seven o’clock, Lin Wu and Maya went downstairs and saw that there were 70,000 surviving players—another 5,000 had died last night. The library was still bustling with people who did not stay long. Lin Wu and Maya made a round and didn’t hear anyone discussing the situation outside.

Maya went to the flagpole and saw that the ribbon was still there, with no new ones added; she knew that Shana and the others had not yet arrived. She then found a spot nearby, laid a blue ribbon on the ground, and pressed it down with a stone as a message for Shana and the others that she would leave the supply point first.

There were four routes from the supply point in Zone 4 to the digging site in Zone 7. The straight route was the main artery, a 10-kilometer journey. This road was wide and straight, with the only obstruction being the building debris on the road. The other three routes each had their characteristics, whether a dried riverbed, passing through a former Forest Park, or weaving through a residential area.

"The main artery."

Lin Wu had no objections, and the two humans and a dog set off.

Two kilometers into their journey, Lin Ma found that the main road was not easy to traverse; high-rises surrounded them on both sides. Some of these high-rises had become hill-like ruins, some were only half-standing, and others were entirely unfinished. Players walking on the main road were like targets, with no one knowing which building might harbor a hidden sniper.

Previously, Lin Ma had ambushed and exterminated several Hunters, but those buildings were only a few stories tall; these skyscrapers, however, soared to a hundred floors. Not to mention that Wai couldn’t sniff them out; even if they gave chase, they weren’t guaranteed to find the shooter. Moreover, the rules specifically warned to be extra careful of traps when entering buildings.
