Chapter 282: Chapter 167: The Way Home_3

Indeed, that was the case. Accustomed to using scopes, both of them had a very low hit rate with their unscoped pistols, and since the zombies were moving, they usually needed to be within 3 meters to reliably score headshots. But it was this ability to reliably score headshots within 3 meters that kept them alive in this fight, and they thought the process looked pretty good—at least they found it visually appealing.

The two entered the apartment building, leaning against the wall to change magazines. Lin Wu asked, "Look cool?"

"Feels great," Shana, also feeling refreshed, asked, "How much ammo left?"

"73 rounds."

"68 rounds." Shana finished changing her magazine and raised her hand to blow the head off a zombie less than a meter away from her.

Lin Wu moved forward, going up the stairs, while Shana covered their rear and the possible appearance of zombies at the entrance of the stairwell. Contrary to what they had expected, they were not swarmed by countless zombies. All this was thanks to their use of silencer-equipped pistols. Many zombies heard the sounds, not just the sound of gunfire, but also the sound of falling zombies and muffled moans. However, the apartment’s complex layout meant that even humans, let alone zombies, would find it hard to pinpoint the exact location of sounds.

Lin Sha always kept moving, luring the zombies into a passive chase after the noise source, another reason they managed to get away. The most important reason, though, was the zombies’ low intelligence. Previously, when Shadow had gone scavenging for food, Lin Wu jumped between two buildings, and because of the Blood Mist’s effect, the zombies in that area, which were smarter, didn’t imitate Lin Wu’s jumping but instead used the stairs to chase after him.

The zombies in the apartment complex were different. The zombies in the high-rise buildings, upon hearing noises, did not head downstairs through the stairwell. Instead, they would peek out of the railing and, upon sighting a target, they would jump down from high up. Even though they wouldn’t die from the fall, they could still break bones, which ended up making Lin Wu’s task of clearing the way remarkably easy. The crippled zombies blocked the pursuit of the others, significantly reducing the workload on Shana, who was covering their retreat.

There were quite a few zombies on the rooftop. Shana closed the metal door, took a spare stick to jam the door, and together with Lin Wu, they took care of the zombies. Then the zombies at the stairwell broke through the door and entered the rooftop. However, they had lost Lin Sha’s position and were looking around blankly in place. Crouched to one side, Lin Wu said, "That’s the way to fight zombies." Elation soared through him.

Shana said, "I’ve used up 110 rounds."

Lin Wu said, "Didn’t they say the things that make you happy are not necessarily good for you?" Candy tastes good, but it makes you fat. Games are fun, but they waste work and study time.

Shana replied, "I’ve been very happy for over 20 years."

Lin Wu said, "Soon you’ll meet a scumbag."

Shana kicked Lin Wu, sending him tumbling into the snow.

The two played around in a corner waiting for the zombies to disperse. With only a few zombies left on the rooftop, they dealt with them and then faced a new problem. The gap between the buildings was about two meters—a distance normally easy to jump over. But it was winter now, and the rooftop was covered with a layer of snow 70 to 80 centimeters deep.

They couldn’t run or jump properly, and one careless move could send them plunging through the two-meter-wide gap into a close encounter with a horde of zombies. With some luck, they might even crush a couple of them.

Would it be possible to clear all the snow to the left? After clearing it, the left side would be 80 centimeters lower than the right, with a distance of two meters, could they make the jump to the right side? They didn’t know; neither Lin Wu nor Shana had ever attempted such a jump before, as from the Olympics to the Shrimp World Cup, the long jump was always performed on flat ground.
