Chapter 281: Chapter 167: The Way Home_2

Spending effort wasn’t the problem; the biggest issue was that consoling a girl could trigger unexpected chemistry, which was precisely the scenario Lin Wu didn’t want to see. Or maybe that’s why Lin Wu always found a way to tease Shana when she was happy. Since ancient times, the amorous have dealt with heartache, and nowadays, devotion leads to marriage. Once you marry, there’s buying a house, followed by raising little devils, toiling away for half a lifetime, only to look back and see nothing but a grave.

Everything started because he decided to comfort a girl.

...

"We’re here," said Shana, looking up at the manhole cover with the purest gaze. The next second, she burst into tears, hugging Lin Wu’s shoulders.

Lin Wu quickly comforted her, "It’s okay, we’ve arrived. You did great, really great." The poor girl had put too much pressure on herself.

"It’s not that," Shana said, her hands pulling at her hair, "I just remembered, this exit is outdoors."

Oh, crap! Now outside was all deep snow coming up to the thighs. It felt like taking the stairs for 30 floors home only to realize you forgot your keys. Lin Wu was at a loss for what to say.

If Shana wasn’t upset, Lin Wu would definitely go mad. But since she was already down, all he could do was comfort her, "No worries, we can go back, we have plenty of time."

"I’m sorry."

"It’s okay," Lin Wu said, finding himself at a loss for words. After all, saying more would be making an effort, something he wanted to avoid. "Don’t rush, let me try first."

"Okay," Shana said, squatting down, head lowered.

Lin Wu could only squat down too, "Hey, look at me, it’s fine. You are smart, but you’re also very beautiful, so you have to allocate some brain cells to your appearance, otherwise, there’s no explaining to people why someone as smart as you can be so pretty."

It took Shana a while to process his words, but once she realized that, nonsense aside, at least he complimented her beauty, she managed to squeeze out a smile and said, "I’m fine now."

Lin Wu climbed up the ladder, with a push of his hands, it moved. He looked down excitedly and said, "It moves, the manhole cover moves!"

A light flickered in Shana’s eyes, "Oh? Really?"

Lin Wu immediately realized he’d been played, "Hey."

Shana flashed a toothy smile, "There was just too much pressure on the journey, I needed to act a little spoiled."

Lin Wu replied, "You can tell the truth."

Shana admitted, "I am telling the truth. At most you’d respond with: ’Didn’t see that coming, you’ve got some skills.’ After acting spoiled, you compliment me on being great and beautiful. How could I not make this little joke?"

Lin Wu was speechless, "If you like hearing it I’ll say it for an hour every day to you." After speaking, he pushed the manhole cover open, peeked outside, and looked down to say, "Smart and beautiful lady, it’s safe outside."

With a determined gesture, Shana declared, "Let’s set off." This man isn’t bad at comforting women; he just doesn’t want to. Shana felt a bit of self-reproach. Why did she play this act for no reason? It just made Lin Wu think less of her.

...

This was a neighborhood basketball court made up of 16 half-courts, or in other words, 8 complete courts. The courts were surrounded by fences, seemingly to prevent kids or the elderly from wandering in and getting injured. The interior was empty, not a single zombie in sight. Originally, there were no zombies in the court and since no zombies had been killed nearby, new ones wouldn’t spawn.

The bad news was that the area was surrounded by densely packed apartment buildings. According to Lin Wu’s drone reconnaissance, reaching Riverside Park required passing through two apartment complex blocks, a total distance of 350 meters, with 120 meters within the apartment area. The number of zombies in those apartments was considerable, something both Lin Wu and Shana were all too familiar with.

Since the buildings blocked part of the sun, to avoid frostbite, the two made quick note of their surroundings and slipped back into the sewer. Looking at the blueprint near the sewer entrance, Shana said, "There are no other exits nearby."

Lin Wu suggested, "We could go back to Hunter Hall, bypass the Titan and head to the county sign. Or we have no choice but to break through the apartment area."

Shana nodded.

Lin Wu continued, "We switch out the snowboards for shoes and use the old tactics — what about crossing the apartment area via the rooftop?"

Shana responded, "These apartments are seven stories high. One challenge is getting to the rooftop, another is getting down from it. If we encounter a Frenzy in the narrow stairwell while trying to get on the roof, it could be a very bad situation."

"If only we had Nightmare’s grappling claws," Lin Wu remarked. "I’ll go up first, and if I make it, I’ll lower the rope for you."

"No," Shana objected. "You won’t be watching your back if you’re alone."

"A direct assault then?"

Shana nodded, and Lin Wu had no objections. They made a quick count of their ammo. Considering the density of zombies in the apartment area, stealth wasn’t an option. If sneaking wasn’t on the table, they might as well go loud. Lin Wu set aside his Silencer, fitted a suppressor on his Beretta M9 pistol, and after checking their ammo, they set off.

Stealthily opening the fence gate, the targeted stairwell was 40 meters away; the courtyard was swarming with zombies. Lin Wu took his Silencer and fired two magazines in quick succession. Although he took down the zombies in the courtyard, because of the overall high density of zombies in the area, the cleared space was quickly filled up again.

"There are too many to kill, take the chance now, go," urged Shana.

Both stood up quickly and headed for the stairs, and the surrounding zombies instantly started running towards them. They each brandished a pistol, shooting as they moved, taking full advantage of the zombies’ habit of running in straight lines, continuously taking down those that converged on them. They played the part of the movie heroes breaking into a den of danger.

One covered while the other reloaded, continuously moving fast without stopping. More than once, zombies charged at them just as they finished reloading, allowing them to blow off the zombies’ heads with one shot. The only downside was that over the mere dozens of meters, they had to reload several times, which spoke volumes about their average marksmanship.
