Chapter 180: Chapter 128: Waste City (Part 2)_2

Fifty meters away from them was a street intersection where three players ran out of a store, closely pursued by green zombies. The green zombies tumbled through the display window, immediately stood up, and howled as they chased after the trio. A dozen motionless green zombies by the roadside sprang into action at the sound, moving to encircle the players.

"There are zombies ahead," a man’s voice called out. They were surrounded on a road 15 meters from the cafe: "Get on top of the vehicle."

The man helped the two girls onto the roof of the bread van, then he fired at the zombies charging toward him. These zombies were fast runners. The man fired seven or eight shots under stress, failing to hit any of the zombies in the head. Seeing this, the man scrambled onto the van’s roof in a panic.

A zombie leaped onto the hood and began to climb toward the roof, where a female player shot it dead. Meanwhile, several zombies on the side of the van reached up to grab the players’ legs, missing by only a few dozen centimeters. Another zombie, without hesitation, climbed on the backs of its companions to reach the top, grabbing one of the girls’ feet and biting down.

Maya and Lin Wu saw the whole scene unfold. Maya said, "It’s hopeless." Zombies emerged from shops in all directions and ran toward the bread van, a never-ending stream. It was unclear whether they were drawn by the gunfire or had been hiding in the stores all along.

In just a short moment, more than a hundred zombies had gathered in the street. Although they had the advantage of numbers, more zombies kept coming. They went through doors and windows, ceaselessly advancing toward the van.

A bridge made of zombie bodies had been formed to the van, and zombies began to climb over each other, assaulting the three players on the roof, who fired their guns while jumping around. The trio had only one automatic rifle, and it was not enough to deal with such agile zombies. In an instant, they were overwhelmed by the horde, leaving behind only cries and screams.

From the moment the three players had fled to the roof, the entire ordeal lasted only 15 seconds.

Maya spoke softly, "Insufficient firepower, and they chose a spot with no strategic advantage for defense. It would be a miracle to survive."

Lin Wu exclaimed, "Look."

Following his gaze, Maya saw that after the zombies had dispersed, one of them had oddly climbed up the straight stairway by the shops. Previously, zombies could not climb straight stairs and even fell down when trying to use regular stairs.

Maya ordered, "Send the drone to see how many zombies were drawn by the gunfire."

After Lin Wu sent out the drone for reconnaissance, he reported, "Quite a few, at least a couple of hundred." They retrieved the drone and then looked back at the street where the traces of zombies were nearly invisible.

Maya looked at the quickly emptied street and felt as though the zombies were just like the residents. Normally, they might dwell inside buildings, and people could hardly detect their presence. But when food appeared, the neighboring zombies would swarm out. This place might indeed be the true World of Zombies.

"I’m a bit hungry," Lin Wu mused, a feeling that hadn’t arisen in a long time.

Maya said, "Let’s move on." This mission could not be treated like a game, so they could not just eat immediately upon feeling hungry.

Lin Wu sensed Maya’s grave expression, unsure of what she was contemplating, offered no objection, and crawled through a broken wall. They moved cautiously, steadily advancing toward their target. After spending some time, they reached the end of the street, below was a road. At that moment, Lin Wu looked at the road as if staring into a deep, calm sea, which could erupt into a tempest the second one stepped into it.

Maya stood by an empty window frame, saying, "Over there."

Lin Wu joined Maya, raised the Silencer, and looked through the scope. To the west was a square in front of a library or a museum, on which stood a statue. About ten meters from the statue, on the ground was a device emitting a green light.

This device seemed to be embedded deep into the ground, with only about a meter of it visible above the surface. The exposed part was made of a transparent cylindrical material with green light swirling inside, looking quite beautiful. Ten meters away from the device, a dozen zombies stood motionless, maintaining their standing or walking postures. When the wind blew, a cloud of dust would rise from their bodies.

Maya said, "This might be the actual image the Returner saw on Earth." The Returner was the first reconnaissance robot launched by Blue Star towards Earth, a hundred years after humanity’s emigration.

Lin Wu wondered, "Can zombies live for over a hundred years?"

Maya answered, "Maybe not, maybe so. In the homeland, the Blood Plague could absorb energy from soil, plants, animals, continuously supplying it to the zombies. Maybe the zombies here can keep absorbing energy from the green device to sustain their vitality? Look, the green light inside the device is very active."

Lin Wu said, "If we emigrate to Earth, we may still have to confront these creatures." Super cities were just the starting point of human development, not the end of what humans could discover.

Maya said, "With current technology, zombies are hardly a concern. Rest for five minutes, drink, and eat. I’ll observe the nearby terrain. Soon, we’ll have to cross this street to enter the building across from here."

"Over here."

Lin Wu called Maya over. Below them on the street were two motionless zombies; one of the zombies had five green grapes hanging from it, one of which was faintly glowing. It fell to the ground, bounced once, and rolled towards the device eighty meters away.

Both of them watched intently as the green grape, which might not be a blister, seemed to be pulled by an invisible force and quickly reached the front of the green device. It touched the device, then slowly shrank and eventually disappeared without a trace.
