Chapter 148: Chapter 115: Visit_2

Maya took the 41 up to the watchtower, which faced the northern road and White Birch Forest Park. The Screamer was suspended above the center of the road. Lin Wu used Stealth and planted two torches in the muddy ground, then deactivated Stealth and strode into the Screamer’s field of vision. Following that, the Screamer let out a piercing roar, but Lin Wu had already covered his ears and took off running.

Over thirty zombies converged from the surroundings, including the scattered undead wandering inside the supermarket. Lin Wu, with the Silencer in hand, climbed the watchtower and saw the dense crowd of zombies under the Screamer’s feet through the scope.

"What are you waiting for?" Lin Wu said, "Start shooting." He fired a shot, killing a zombie.

Only then did Maya snap out of it, and raising her gun, she burst the heads of seven zombies in rapid succession.

"Slow down," Lin Wu commanded, irritated, "You’ll take over luring them soon."

"Got it," retorted Juvenile Ghost. In sync with Lin Wu’s rhythm, Maya shifted to single shots.

The pair wiped out the thirty-some zombies in no time, and Maya ran into the Screamer’s range again, prompting another scream and a dash back to the watchtower. This time around, only 20 zombies appeared, but the group included a Frenzy.

The third wave consisted of only 15 zombies, and the fourth wave, just 10. From the fifth wave on, even with the Screamer screaming itself hoarse, only five zombies gathered at its feet.

"Not satisfying enough."

Lin Wu deeply agreed. With just the Silencer, it would take over an hour to kill them all. Maya’s 41 was too brutal; even trying to control its speed, it quickly cleared the zombies.

Lin Wu suggested a rotten idea, "How about we pull the zombie tide from Left County over?"

Maya still had some sense, "No, the tide has all sorts of zombies, the regular ones can’t keep up with a Frenzy."

Lin Wu frowned in thought.

Maya, trying to come up with another rotten idea, suggested, "We could hang a Screamer in each of the east, west, and south directions."

Lin Wu replied, "The east side is fine, but the west and south directions aren’t within the watchtower’s shooting range."

Maya countered, "But they are within the Rooftop Safe Zone’s shooting range."

Such a dirty trick was something Lin Wu would typically propose. Seeing Maya’s excited expression, he didn’t say anything more, packed up his gun, and said, "Let’s go find the Screamers."

Maya said, "I’ll get the rope. Wait, if we do this, our base’s Threat Value will shoot up."

Lin Wu replied, "I have a plan."

Maya asked, "What plan?"

Lin Wu said, "Once the system announces a siege, we’ll pack the materials in bags, put them in the pickup, pile the junk in the back of the pickup, and drive the pickup far away to hide."

That made sense. Maya added, "We could also take the base apart in advance, provided we find several more vehicles."

Lin Wu said, "Didn’t Nightmare mention an ambulance? With 9 storage slots, plus the pickup, we can carry 15 resource bags. If we bring the survey vehicle over, and each of us carries a resource bag, we can take at least 20 resource bags with us. Besides, we might not lose. Zombies can’t reach the rooftop."

Maya deeply agreed, "It’d be best to get another automatic rifle as well. Plus, a 10-minute warning is enough time to call for help from the main base." Because of the Sentry Card, it takes more than 10 minutes to reach the supermarket base during the day, but Bai Ban is working on the farm; a quick shout should do the trick. At night, as long as they’re fast enough, they can make it to the supermarket base. With Bai Ban and a few others and their cars, they could transport another wave of resource packs. Ready to fight or retreat, what’s there to fear from a siege? The only thing they hadn’t considered: what if they’re not at the base during a siege?

Having struck a deal, they immediately grabbed ropes, took adhesive tape, and spent the night searching for Screamers everywhere.

...

At 5 a.m., the last Screamer was hoisted up, and with a stepladder, Maya removed the tape from its mouth. Just as the Screamer was about to scream, Lin Wu jabbed it with a stick, interrupting the casting. Lin Wu kept jabbing the Screamer while Maya retreated with the stepladder, before finally escaping himself.

This Screamer from the south gate brought them a pleasant surprise, its roar followed by the rattling sound of zombies tumbling down from the trees. Maya, with her 41, killed with great delight while Lin Wu cursed his slow bolt action. The training was highly effective; Lin Wu’s aiming became faster, and pulling the trigger became one smooth motion, a far cry from his rookie days where it took him a while to locate a zombie in the scope.

Maya explained to Lin Wu, that’s gun sense, being able to point the gun barrel at the target quickly without aiming. The higher the magnification in the scope, the greater the demands on the sniper. A slight tremble of the hand, and the person in the scope could be missed.

After wiping out the first wave at the south gate, Maya went downstairs to call Stone on the radio.

Stone: "Good morning, Maya."

Maya: "Um..."

Stone: "Didn’t get enough sleep again?"

Maya: "Sorry, I’d like to take another day off."

Stone: "No problem, get some good rest."

At 7 a.m., except for Su Shi and Snow Egg who stayed behind at Shadow Base, Stone brought Bai Ban members in two cars to visit the supermarket base. What the hell? What was Maya thinking, being so irresponsible?

The vehicle entered from the north gate, and about a dozen zombies were gathered in the middle of the road, everyone got out of the car to see one hanging upside down and screaming. Before they could react, the zombies below the screamer had their heads burst one by one. Stone looked up to see two people on the watchtower, "What’s going on?"

"Hey, Stone." Lin Wu yelled, "See the stick on the ground?"

Stone picked up the stick, "I see it."

Lin Wu said, "Poke it."

Maya asked, "Shouldn’t you be asking, how did you get here?"

Lin Wu, "Rather than asking questions, I’d prefer not to take a lap."

With another scream, 10 more zombies came from a distance, and Lin Wu and Maya immediately went into action; they were competing to shoot moving targets. Stationary targets no longer satisfied them.

"Hit the tree." Lin Wu was annoyed.

It was Maya’s turn, her shot barely missed a zombie, and she couldn’t help but jump, "Ah!" She started the countdown, "5, 4..."

"It’s a hit."

Maya jumped again in frustration. If Lin Wu hit the target, he could shoot again. Lin Wu’s next shot missed, and he grabbed his hair with both hands in vexation, then immediately started counting down, "5, 4..."

Maya stepped on the watchtower’s railing, took aim, and fired, "Hit, hit, hit again, yay, I win."

A cough was heard, and both turned to see several people from Bai Ban standing quietly at the entrance of the sentry tower’s staircase. Maya hurriedly composed herself, changing from an excited tone to a serious one, "You’re here, let’s go downstairs for some tea."

It hurt Stone to see them playing away when there were serious matters to attend to. A deputy commander should behave properly, not scream and jump around with Lin Wu. What kind of image was that?

...

There weren’t enough chairs, so everyone just stood and drank tea. Stone was about to give a lecture, but Lin Wu said, "Your timing is perfect, we collected a pile of junk yesterday."

Stone, "Junk? I don’t believe you two would collect junk."

Maya explained, "Yesterday, we gathered six resource packs, along with a bunch of facility plug-ins."

Lin Wu took various plug-ins out of storage, "For speeding up recovery, sleeping bags, barbecue grills, take your pick—whatever you need, help yourselves." They had found seventeen plug-ins in Forest Park that day. The plug-ins weren’t life-saving but rather a nice little boost, like the icing on the cake, which was always better than no icing, as they slightly enhanced the facilities’ functions.

Shana tugged at Lin Wu’s clothes, and as he put the plug-ins on the table for them to choose from, he stepped back to Shana and asked, "Having fun?"

"Yeah." Lin Wu looked at Shana, "You should have let us know first, we would have toned it down."

"Forget it." Shana said, "I was planning to scavenge materials around your base today."

"I’ll take you to the car graveyard." Lin Wu turned back, "Everybody, feel free. Shana and I are going to strip cars."

Little Knife watched with a cold eye, "Hmph."

Lin Wu said, "Little Knife, have Sister Maya take you to the Blood Plague cement factory for a look."

Little Knife immediately perked up, "Is there Blood Plague nearby?"

"Of course."

Stone said urgently, "What the hell, you aren’t satisfied unless you kill a few, are you?"

Lin Wu turned back, "Old Man, watch your mouth or I’ll take you down myself."

Stone rolled up his sleeves, "Come on, I’m not afraid." In a low voice, "Hold me back."

"Hold me back." Lin Wu, "Come on, I’ll tell you, if Shana weren’t holding me back, I would beat the crap out of you."

Stone, "Let me go, I’ll beat him senseless today."

"Let me go, I’m gonna kill him."

"You’re lucky today."

The extras were tired out!
