Chapter 1011: Chapter 437: The Last Supper_2

Day 178 at noon, everyone was exhausted. Shana decisively ordered: "Lin Wu to the front door, Snow Egg to the back door, Little Knife to make bullets, everyone else eat and sleep."

Snow Egg worried: "Can we hold out?"

Shana said: "We have to take shifts, otherwise, we’ll be worn to death."

Three people on break used broth to blanch noodles, feeding those on duty. Lin Wu turned his head to slurp noodles, his gun accurately taking down each target, then snatching a moment to down a bowl of noodle soup, instantly revitalized.

After being fed, the rest group quickly ate and then laid down with earplugs, falling into deep sleep rapidly.

One shot, two shots, three shots, the pistol jammed. Lin Wu let go of it and pulled out a new pistol from his waist to take down two zombies. Then he placed the pistol on the sandbags and began pressing bullets into the magazine from the basket.

Snow Egg was using a rifle, and he was under a lot of pressure with not much rest; Little Knife was essentially serving Snow Egg. They even chatted while working, reminiscing about the happy times at North Town, talking about the glory of the Sawmill, and the Commercial Street Base that helped everyone through the bitter cold.

Lin Wu couldn’t hear their chat, not only because he was at the other end of the carriage but also because he was wearing earplugs. In Lin Wu’s world, there were only zombies, pistols, and bullets. When the basket of bullets was depleted, he tore open a cardboard box, tore, and tore again, to fill the whole basket. Killing zombies, he pressed bullets whenever he got a chance, like a machine that had lost its ability to think, tireless and executing each task with precision.

Unaware of how long he had killed, bullet casings piled up around him. A hand patted Lin Wu’s shoulder—it was Shana, who said: "Go rest."

It was only then that Lin Wu checked the time—8 o’clock in the evening. The relieving personnel had finished dinner and had the noodles ready. Lin Wu sat down to eat and watched the zombies at the back door: "How’s it going?"

Snow Egg glanced back: "Using the rifle is relatively easy. However, we have little over a thousand rounds left when you add both types of rifle bullets."

Lin Wu shouted: "How much pistol ammo do we have left?"

Shana answered: "Less than five thousand rounds."

Lin Wu cursed with a smirk: "What’s the point of sleeping, I guess I won’t get many hours in. It’s time to sharpen a couple of knives."

Listening to the sharpening sounds, Little Knife said: "Didn’t expect we’d come back to square one. Remember when just getting a small pistol felt like the happiest thing in the world."

Lin Wu asked: "Do you miss your signature head-stomping move?"

Little Knife laughed: "I can’t keep up with it now."

Snow Egg said: "The window glass is broken."

"What happened?"

Snow Egg said: "There’s an obstacle outside the window, but there’s a hole just big enough to get through."

Lin Wu said: "The Day After Tomorrow River is frozen solid, filled with zombies underneath."

Snow Egg said: "Could we play hide and seek with the zombies?"

Lin Wu said: "Are you talking about the bridge hole we used for cooling in summer? But there are two problems, one is that we’re quite far from the bridge hole. The other is that the bridge hole isn’t safe either, Frenzy could climb up along the bridge."

Little Knife said: "Third problem, a bridge hole can hold at most three people."

Snow Egg said: "But it seems like the bridge hole is the only way out."

As they spoke, a strange noise sounded, and everyone looked to see that a steel cable at the back door had snapped. Thankfully, it wasn’t a critical one, posing no immediate issue.

Lin Meng said: "This feeling of being cornered, unable to turn the tables, is super uncomfortable."

Lin Wu said: "Humans have lost from the beginning."

Blood Meng said: "If players knew Hardcore Mode had an apocalypse horn quest, they should have joined forces from the beginning to build a steel fortress."

Shana retorted: "Would you give up your own benefit for other players?"

Blood Meng said: "No." Unity is easily said, but hard to achieve.

Lin Wu took a deep breath: "My eyelids are fighting each other, let me sleep for a while. Remember to wake me before I die."

...

At midnight on day 179, Lin Wu was awakened by a slap from Snow Egg. Disoriented, he asked after a while: "Have we eaten?"

"No, get up and watch the fireworks."

All bullets had been spent, and Sharp Blade had dulled. As the zombies pressed in, the steel cables squeaked, and some of the perforated spots began to fray. Everyone sat on the ground, and Blood Meng poured six glasses of whiskey. Meanwhile, Shana was on the phone: "Yes, okay, the fiercer the better, thank you Xiao Jun, thank you."

After hanging up, Shana announced: "In 3 minutes, East Base will bombard the railway bridge."

Lin Meng asked: "Does that include us?"

"Let’s count it." Shana raised her glass.

Lin Wu, still groggy, picked up the glass as well, downing the whiskey with everyone else, and asked: "Three minutes?"

"What about it?"

Lin Wu: "Can it be done any sooner? I need to use the bathroom. Passing stool after sleep is good for health, it becomes a habit."

Shana couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation: "You really know how to kill the mood."

"Go ahead, go ahead."

Lin Meng advised: "Take a dump and cut it off quick, then come back to have the second glass, and we’ll go out gloriously together."

Everyone looked at Lin Meng, who chuckled and held out his glass: "This whiskey tastes awful, give me another."

The timing to use the bathroom was terribly awkward. Go, and he wouldn’t make it back within three minutes. But stay, and he was desperate to relieve himself. He intended to get it over with quickly, but a series of farts led to the loss of the urge to go. Having his pants down already, Lin Wu felt he should squeeze something out, but all that came out was gas. Left with no choice, he resigned to finish up, standing up and pulling his layers of pants back on.

Just as he had his pants on, the train shook violently, and Lin Wu’s head slammed against the wall, knocking him out.

...

When Lin Wu woke up again, it was dawn. He first regained his wits and pieced his memory back together, then puzzled over how he was still alive. Soon, he found out why.

After the railway bridge base was bombarded by heavy artillery, parts of the bridge had collapsed, one girder fell, and the 12-carriage train was in shambles. Four carriages remained on the railway bridge, one of which dangled upside down. Lin Wu found himself in that suspended carriage, hanging in the air.

Lin Wu’s back was against the 60-centimeter-thick carriage body, and beside him was a 2.5-meter-wide breach. Various debris and zombies, due to gravity, slid from the top and fell through the hole, finally crashing onto the solid ice on the river’s surface.

Lin Wu assessed his situation and propped himself up with his hands, his whole body ached as he checked for injuries. He still had all his limbs, but his body was pierced by various odd objects – shards of metal, screws, ceramics, and even a fragment of an antelope’s bone. There were superficial injuries all over his body. But the worst was on his lower back, creating unbearable pain with any movement, followed by his right leg, which had completely lost sensation. Finally, his left arm, which was a mangled mess, especially on the outer side, like the filling of a chopped dumpling.

A zombie leaped from above, stretching its hand during the fall and clawing at the outer side of Lin Wu’s left arm, ripping a chunk of flesh away. Only then did Lin Wu realize where the injury on his arm came from, so he squeezed to the right.

Another zombie fell down, narrowly missing his left arm.

What does this mean?

Another zombie, and yet another one. The zombies had thoroughly overrun the railway bridge base, climbing onto the three carriages and queuing up to leap towards the fourth.

Then came Frenzy. Frenzy jumped down, scraping its claws on the floor, slightly altering its fall trajectory, but ultimately only grazing Lin Wu’s left arm. The flesh was too rotten to provide any grip, and Frenzy, unsurprisingly, smashed onto the icy surface.

The zombies on the ice awaited the bodies falling from the sky, eating every one that landed, looking up eagerly. Some unlucky ones were directly killed by falling zombies breaking their necks.

Dawn! Good grief. Lin Wu admitted he had offended Dawn, but never imagined Dawn would resort to a method of revenge using a blunt knife to slice at the flesh.

Lin Wu’s right hand searched his body, finding a stick of beef jerky, a handgun, and two magazines.

Suppressing a pained grunt, Lin Wu shifted his body another 10 centimeters to the right. The shift revealed a worse situation; his back wasn’t leaning against a solid part, but instead, he was pierced by jagged edges at the break. The shift felt like being impaled in a new spot. Lin Wu dared not move any further, sensing a potential severe spinal fracture, which would certainly sever nearby nerves if pulled upon.

Let it be!
