Chapter 1010: Chapter 437: The Last Supper
The water buckets, coal stoves, kitchens, surplus coal, water pipes, and other supplies were all carried to the left and right sides of Carriage No. 1, completely blocking the corridor.
Sealing the front and back doors is an art. Drilling holes on both sides of the carriage, steel cables as thick as a pinky finger are threaded through and then tightly wrapped around the protruding parts of the locomotive’s front. Ten cables as a group, some secured onto the wheels of the locomotive. Once finished, the already narrow passage at the front door was sealed off by these taut steel cables.
There are relatively large gaps between the cables, but only a head could pass, not the body. This arrangement has many advantages as the zombies must deal with the bodies of their counterparts in a tight space. Whether they eat on the spot or drag them away to eat behind, it would cause blockages.
In addition to food, weapons, and water, the generators were also dismantled and moved here, transforming Carriage No. 1 into an independent space, and installed spotlights at the front and rear of the carriage. Simple chimneys were also set up for the three coal stoves.
Using the toilet would not be a problem, as there are two inside the carriage, but they discharge directly onto the rails, so they couldn’t be used previously.
With meals and toileting arrangements fully prepared, it was fully dark, and the chef Lin Meng’s sauced venison soup was ready. Shana called back Sentry Blood Meng from the traction car area and Scout Lin Wu from near the water source.
The two entered Carriage No. 1 from Carriage No. 2. After Shana confirmed that no more extra supplies needed to be moved, Snow Egg, with Little Knife’s help, sealed the rear of Carriage No. 1 with steel cables. From this point forward, the Shadow People were cocooned in their own web, unable to leave.
The kitchen is in the middle of the carriage, where Lin Meng was filling everyone’s bowls with meat and soup. Beside the kitchen is a pile of coal for burning, and next to it are several barrels of diesel, used for lighting and power generation. Ammunition, firearms, and sleeping berths are neatly arranged.
Everyone accepted the hot soup with thanks, sitting on a carpeted floor, and Lin Wu raised his bowl: "Thanks to Xiao Rou for bestowing upon us this last supper."
"Thank you."
After dinner, Lin Meng simmered the deer bones for stock. The others either lay or leaned to rest. Lin Meng opened her laptop to watch two surveillance screens.
The bridge, being without a Sentry, saw zombies successfully stacking on top of each other, climbing onto it. They started to gather in the several hundred meters between the broken bridge and the train. The locomotive’s camera has already captured scattered zombies; those approaching within a hundred meters of the train’s head stopped, seemingly waiting for the rest of the zombies to gather.
Lin Meng also checked the sandbags on both sides. The sandbags were not meant to block zombies but served as makeshift tables and chairs, providing the Shadow People with a relatively comfortable shooting position.
...
At 4 a.m. on day 178, the final battle commenced. The first horde of zombies rushing into the locomotive were stopped by the steel cables, the following zombies compressed behind, but due to the narrowness of the locomotive, their impact was insufficient to cause structural damage. Seated on sandbags, Lin Wu used a handgun to single out zombies just two meters away.
The situation at the rear was more dire; the pressure of the zombies could be heard straining the steel cables, with some zombies even being sliced into by the cables. The primary firepower was concentrated here. As the bodies accumulated, the zombies’ offensive slowed and even stalled as they dragged zombie corpses behind, throwing them to the feasting hordes, and continued to press forward themselves.
Everyone generally understood the situation; the front door was unlikely to be breached. Whether the rear door would be breached depended on the overall rigidity and strength of the carriage.
The roof was a major vulnerability, with Titans already jumping on top of it. Moreover, Frenzy was trying to find a breakthrough from the side corridors amidst the piles of debris.
"Exploding Carnage," Lin Wu said, reaching for his gas mask beside him and putting it on. Everyone followed suit, putting on their gas masks. Following the explosion of two Exploding Carnages, the carriage filled with green gas.
Little Knife: "I can’t breathe."
Snow Egg: "Don’t take it off, keep your emotions steady."
Little Knife: "No, I just can’t breathe."
Snow Egg busily rummaged for and handed a new gas mask to Little Knife, who switched to it and continued to fight: "It’s okay now."
But after just five seconds, Little Knife said, "My eyes hurt."
It was over; she hadn’t closed her eyes when changing gas masks. Shana said, "Lin Meng, take Little Knife for treatment, wash her eyes with alcohol."
Blood Meng was shocked: "Are you joking? Can you wash your eyes with alcohol?"
Shana: "I don’t know, can you?"
Blood Meng was stumped, and after a while, responded: "Just wash around the eyes, hold your breath."
"Brothers, I’ve found this is faster." Lin Wu held a Lee-Enfield rifle with a bayonet fitted, poking through the net with each stab going through. This realization came because Lin Wu had run out of ammunition. It’s said that society progresses thanks to the lazy. If everyone liked carrying water, the water wheel wouldn’t have been invented.
At the rear door, Snow Egg and the others learned the method, using daggers and sticks or other objects to make long spears, standing at the door and stabbing outward. The zombies were at a disadvantage because they didn’t know how to seize weapons. A batch of zombies got stabbed to death, the attack stalled, and a new batch got stabbed to death, stalling the attack again. Under compression, zombies could not dodge the incoming sharp weapons.
By morning, nobody knew how many zombies had been killed. After three hours of combat, Shana reviewed the potential causes of death for the Shadow People.
The first cause of death: the roof of the carriage being breached.
The second cause of death: the rear door steel cables snapping or the overall structure deforming.
The third cause of death: running out of ammunition and supplies.
The fourth cause of death: dying from exhaustion.
Little Knife was in bad shape; apart from her eyes, there were no other anomalies on her body, but she had completely lost her sight. Sitting aside, she fumbled with empty magazines being handed to her, loading them with bullets. Although the bayonet had become the primary weapon, in the face of immense pressure, there was still a need to switch to firearms and rapidly shoot down a swarm of zombies, forcing the zombies to halt their attack.
