Chapter 362: Then, the person in the ambulance...
Geumtae was at home when all this was going on. He came down with a fever that morning so he didn’t really pick up his phone.
As a doctor, even for pets, he should’ve been able to know if he was getting sick or not. Yet, he dismissed his own condition and worked hard at the vet since orders were coming in more hastily than before.
It looked like someone had spread the word. Now, who could that famous somebody be?
Well, thanks to that, he hired a few helping hands and inevitably got worn out.
’I don’t want to bother my sweetie or my honey, so I’ll just rest up a bit.’ he said to himself, concocting a little brew that would help reduce the fever.
And then he has porridge. He had everything under control.
Unlike Dongwoo and the rest who had things hard for them, his fever was only light.
He did not check the television and even didn’t check his phone. He decided to spend the whole day incognito, and the next day, he would come out in tip-top shape.
"Meow!" Lily meowed.
Compared to how bloated she looked a few months back, he actually put her on a diet, and though her fur was still so fluffy, she had lost weight and could even run around.
Fast enough to not get caught and put in the bathtub during bath time.
"Of course, I have Lily to take care of as well." He said and then sneezed. Following his sneeze, he coughed quite hard. And when he had stopped, he looked at his hand. There was blood.
"Ugh, is it worse than a fever?" He wondered and decided to just go to the hospital and run some tests. There was nothing to lose in knowing what was actually wrong with him.
He would try not to run into Dongwoo or anyone related to Minwoo so that his sickness would remain a secret.
"Come on, Lily. We’ll only be for a moment." He said.
Luckily, he wasn’t as dizzy as he was that morning and his temperature had gone down a lot. But he still had a bad cough.
"Alright, in we go." He placed Lily in the passenger’s seat and then got in. He put on his seatbelt, put on hers, and started driving.
The commotion he witnessed on the road was... Not something he expected to see.
Meanwhile, Seojun’s guys had surrounded the hospital conspicuously to avoid being suspicious but they couldn’t afford to not become suspicious when they were apprehending anyone with a mask on.
"Boss, we’ve looked around but there’s no sign of them." One of the men said to Seojun through the phone. "They might’ve escaped."
"No, they couldn’t have been that fast." Seojun said.
He was rushing to the hospital in his car. Seojin had already gone ahead and was the closest to the hospital.
’If they want to escape, they will likely use a means that’s highly unsuspicious.’ Seojun thought. ’In a hospital, how does one get out without even needing verification?’ he wondered, and then his eyes widened. "Keep your eyes out for any ambulance leaving the building."
As soon as he said that, an ambulance sped past the man on the phone, giving him a heart attack.
The back door of the ambulance truck opened during its attempt to flee and the man caught a glimpse of who they were looking for, laid flat on the ambulance’s stretcher.
The kidnappers were all dressed as nurses and doctors with their mouths covered with nose masks, so their identities were hard to figure out.
"Dammit! Go after that ambulance." The man yelled. "Boss," he returned to the call but Seojun had cut off once he realized he had been right.
He called Seojin to inform him since he was the closest to the hospital.
But he wasn’t the only one close to the scene. In fact, Geumtae, who had just parked his car saw this ambulance escape in a frenzy. And just as they were about to shut the backdoor, he discovered Dongwoo was in that ambulance as well, lying unconscious on the stretcher.
"Wait, what’s going on?" He wondered. "Was that him or Minwoo?"
He didn’t have too much time to think about it when he heard men yelling,
"Don’t let them get away or you’re dead. Bring back the boss’s lover by all means."
Geumtae’s eyes widened. Those men were speaking Italian and if they were working for an Italian guy, was it Alejandro?
No, that matter had been settled.
Then, the person in the ambulance...
He gritted his teeth and punched the wheels.
That was Dongwoo alright.
He followed the van, and judging by the direction they were heading towards, he knew a shortcut.
But once he apprehended them, what would he do? If they had guns, how would he tackle the situation?
But he couldn’t stop. He couldn’t stop, knowing he might’ve been able to save Dongwoo.
"Lily, this is going to be dangerous so hide." He said, hoping Lily would understand.
And she did. She meowed and went under the passenger’s seat to hide.
"Good girl. Now stay there, I’ll let you know when to come out."
He hit the geet and chased after the van with all he had. He took out his phone at that moment and called Seojun while keeping his eyes on the road.
"Hey, you bastards, you better explain to me, why in the world is Dogwood being captured?" He yelled.
"We don’t know but we’re on their tail."
"Yeah, right. I saw your men. I’m going to apprehend them with a shortcut. I’m sending you my GPS location now." He said, "I don’t know what’s going on, and I don’t know how dangerous this is, but if Dongwoo is being caught up in one of your dramas again, I swear to God that I won’t forgive you on his behalf."
"I won’t forgive myself either." Seojun said with disappointment in his tone.
Geumtae frowned and then he coughed. He coughed so badly that he knew if he took his eyes off the road for a second, he would get into an accident, given how fast he was going, so he never peeled his eyes off the road.
He sent his location to Seojun and Seojun sent it to Seojin.
Geumtae finally intercepted the van, stopping his car right in front of their path, and praying that they did not ram his car over in a desperate attempt to flee.
Luckily, they didn’t, and they stopped. Their stop was so abrupt that the car spun around a bit and crashed into a wall.
"Dongwoo!" Geumtae yelled and got down from his car. He rushed to the back of the van and when he did not hear any movements coming from inside, he opened the van.
It was a mess at the back but luckily, Dongwoo was still strapped to the stretcher.
"Oh, God!" He exclaimed but just as he was about to make a move to rescue him, one of them pulled out a gun and pointed at him.
"You sick bastard, is this your doing?" They asked, their head bleeding from the sudden crash.
Geumtae stayed silent, stayed in one place, and kept his eyes on Dongwoo.
If he made one slight mistake, they would pull the trigger.
The sound of approaching vehicles from the distance reminded the kidnapper that he didn’t have all day.
"Dammit, give me the keys to your car." He ordered and Geumtae obediently handed him his car remote.
And with that, he felt a sharp pain in his head, and the kidnapper knocked him unconscious.
Slowly, his consciousness faded, viewing with a blurry vision as the kidnapper woke the others up, and they carried Dongwoo to Geumtae’s car.
’Ah, Lily is still in there.’ he thought, watching the car zoom off. ’Save your daddy, Lily.’ his eyes finally shut.
The kidnappers were wise enough to disable the GPS on Geumtae’s car and even throw his phone out, but Seojin was still hot on their tails.
With gritted teeth, he raced towards their direction. He wasn’t going to let them take Dongwoo, no matter what.
But luck wasn’t on his side. As it was, they had left the depth of the city and were still going, heading towards a train track and there was an approaching train.
The lights and bells were ringing, wanting any approaching vehicle about the upcoming train but the kidnappers were not planning on stopping anytime soon.
They could beat the train but unless Seojin reached the max of his car with the little fuel he had, he was never going to make it.
He gritted his teeth, his hands clenching tightly on the steering wheel.
’I have to make it. I have to.’ he told himself, his face squeezed in desperation and his feet pressing down the accelerator.
The car in front had already passed the train track and the train was already very near. A slip-up would cost his life.
But if he didn’t take the risk, they would never get Dongwoo. They would lose him.
"I have to..." The fuel in the car ran dry just as he was about to make his big move, and the car stopped just before the train that passed right in front of him.
In horror, he stared at the moving train. His widened eyes grew teary and he covered his face, disappointed in himself and his incompetence.
"I’m a failure. Hyung, what do I do?" He cried. "Hyung! Hyung! I should’ve gone after you back then. I should’ve... Oh, Hyung." He dropped his head on the steering wheel in deep regret.
Seojun had also sensed that Seojin wasn’t able to get to Dongwoo before the train blocked his path and he, too, felt deep regret.
In the end, they should’ve listened to Haejoo’s words and spared themselves of this deep feeling of self-hatred and regret.
Now, what were they going to do?
