Chapter 147: But let’s look a little bit further
When Minwoo had entered Dongwoo’s office earlier, while Dongwoo was sleeping, with his head on the desk, he heard a sniffle.
’Is he crying?’ he thought and went to check, only to find Dongwoo’s face flooded with tears.
The sight was a real heartbreaker and Minwoo felt he might be the reason behind it because he kept hearing him mutter,
"No family. No family. No one."
If his presence was the reason his brother was in pain, was there any reason for him to stick around?
But he didn’t want to leave. He couldn’t leave.
This was his opportunity to make right the wrong of the past. The past...
The past that he could never forget. The past he wished he could erase or rather, change.
If he could go back to that time, he would’ve never acted so immature, even if he was young. He would’ve been more like his brother. Mature.
He was four years old then, but the memory was very vivid because it haunted him, reminding him that he was the very reason his brother was out in the world, somewhere, living without the parents who loved him so much and without his birthright.
What happened was that, on the first night of their family’s vacation, Minwoo woke his brother up and with a mischievous smile, said,
"Hyung, I found a dog hole that leads directly into the woods. Let’s go see the fireflies." He said but Dongwoo refused.
"It’s late." He said, rubbing his sleepy eyes. "And it’ll be dangerous out there so let’s not go."
"But I want to see the fireflies." Minwoo cried. "It’ll be beautiful."
"It’s dangerous, Minwoo. Let’s stay here."
But Minwoo did not stay still. He pouted his lips and mumbled,
"If Hyung doesn’t want to see the fireflies with me, I’ll go on my own."
Dongwoo thought he might’ve been joking, and even if he was telling the truth, guards were patrolling, so they would catch him, but as time went by, he got worried.
"Minwoo, where are you?" He went to the kitchen but he wasn’t there.
He was nowhere he could check and scared that he would get in trouble with their parents, he went with the butler, Owens.
It was responsible to go out with an adult when things like that happened.
They searched around the dog hole but it looked like Minwoo had gone deep into the woods.
"Oh no, Minwoo, where are you?" Dongwoo worried called out.
"Young master, where are you?" Owens called out and sighed. "It would seem alerting your parents is inevitable, young master. A search party needs to be released immediately so we can find the young master on time."
Dongwoo had no choice but to nod.
"But let’s look a little bit further." He said and then they heard Minwoo’s cries coming from the cliff. "Minwoo." He called and dashed in that direction with his little legs.
"Young master, wait, slow down or you might fall." Owen warned as he followed from behind but Dongwoo did not slow down.
Their villa was located on a hill so underneath the cliff was the sea. And if Minwoo was by the cliff then...
"Hyung, help me." Minwoo cried as he stood at the edge of the cliff, shivering in fear as three vipers faced him, threatening to bite him.
Dongwoo saw the snakes and shivered. He hated snakes but what he hated more than anything was his brother being in danger.
He picked up a little branch and threw it at the snakes, getting their attention.
"Stay away from my brother, you disgusting creatures."
And just as he wanted, the snakes turned to him.
"Now’s your chance, run, Minwoo." Dongwoo yelled while keeping an eye on the snakes that were slithering towards him, hissing as they slowly approached him.
"But Hyung, the snakes..."
"Worry about yourself first, dummy. You’re going to get it from me once we get back." He said and Minwoo tried to get away from the cliff.
But then, he slipped.
"No!" Dongwoo overcame his fear right away and ran past the snakes to save his brother. Luckily, he caught him and thought he had avoided a tragedy from happening.
They both stood together and sighed, feeling safe, but then, the rock under Dongwoo’s feet broke, and he pushed Minwoo so he wouldn’t fall with him. And in the process, Minwoo hit his head and went unconscious.
Dongwoo’s eyes went lifeless as he found himself falling down the cliff but then, Owen caught him by the arm.
"I got you, young master. Are you okay?" Owen asked.
He was lying down and had almost half his body off the cliff while holding onto Dongwoo’s arm.
Dongwoo stared at the water underneath the cliff and he struggled, trying to get up Owen’s arm. But when he looked up, he found a snake crawling towards Owen and his eyes widened.
"Owen, look out."
But it was too late; the snake had already dug its poisonous fangs into Owen’s shoulder.
"Ahh!" Owen screamed, but even in pain, he strengthened his grip on Dongwoo’s arm.
"Owen, Owen." Dongwoo called. "Are you okay?"
Even in the situation he was in, he was worrying about someone else.
"I’m fine, Young master." Owen said, but the snake’s fang was still deep in his skin. "Let me help you up, young master." He said but then, another snake bit him.
It was almost as if they were all targeted at him.
"Ah, you need to treat yourself, Owen. The vipers are deadly." Dongwoo said, his eyes becoming teary. "It hurts, doesn’t it?"
"I’m okay, Young master." Owen said.
His body felt heavy, and he could not pull Dongwoo up, but he wasn’t ready to give up.
Even with the snakes biting him, he wouldn’t let go. And if he tried to take the snakes off him, there were chances that they would bite the unconscious Minwoo, so he agreed to suffer it all.
"Owen, Owen." Dongwoo suddenly called. "Did you like my drawing earlier? Mum and Dad said it was pretty and that I was a genius."
"Yes, Young master. It was a masterpiece." Owen said and Dongwoo smiled, the tears in his eyes finally rolling down.
"Thank goodness. I sure wish I had a camera to take a picture of it. Uoh know, pictures always last."
"Yes, they do, Young master. Just hang on a little longer."
Dongwoo felt Owen’s warm blood drop on his face. The snakes were still biting and Owen was doing his best to hang on, bearing with their venom.
Not only that, Owen must’ve already noticed that the edge of the cliff was breaking, and if he even attempted to list Dongwoo up, it would break, and they would both fall.
It couldn’t carry both weights.
They just needed to reduce their weight by a little.
"Ah, Owen, don’t be mad at Minwoo, okay? He’s a trouble maker but he’s a good boy with a good heart." He said and bit his lip. "He has a very big heart, you see. I wish I had his carefree attitude."
"It’s all going to be alright, Young master." Owen said.
He was sweating profusely and he was also losing the senses of his hand. Meaning, he couldn’t hold on to Dongwoo’s for much longer.
