Chapter 123: Chap 123

"A tether connected to the Ancestral Lands and to our own," Dora hummed as they reconvened in Helena’s office.

"It could be you," Kara suggested to Dora. "You’re mated to a wolf and your brother is in the Ancestral land. You’re the most powerful Witch here."

"Not the most powerful," Baron whispered as his gaze met Helena’s.

"My magic is untrained," Helena reminded Baron.

"And yet you just cast one of the most complicated spells and barely needed an hour to rest," Dora reminded her. "There is more power in you than you think."

"She can’t be the tether," Kara grumbled. "She’s not trained in our ways."

"She is to an extent," Dora declared. "I think my brother and nephew made sure she knew at least a little of our ways. If she hadn’t she wouldn’t be able to cast such powerful magic."

"You have to act as tether, Dora," Kara insisted.

"She can’t," Helena sighed as she leaned forward. "My grandfather said she can’t. It has to be someone more powerful. Grandfather said that only someone who rivaled my father in power could do it."

"Then it should be you," Dora declared. "I can already tell that you’d at least rival your father. You also are of the Moon Goddess’s children giving you an additional bond to this land aside from your mate and your son."

Helena felt overwhelmed by what her Grand-aunt was telling her.

Sure she was making sense and Helena would willingly

"How can you let this half-breed take all the glory, Theodora?" Kara questioned, catching Helena off guard.

Helena’s gaze slid to Baron, who looked just as shocked as she was.

"Mom?" Baron asked, his voice shaking.

"The glory of bringing the Grand Warlock and the rest of the coven should go to you, Theodora! Not some half-breed—"

"Enough," Dora hissed, drawing everyone’s attention to her.

The air vibrated with magic as Kara shrank away.

"I will not let you speak of my Grand-niece that way!" Dora said as slammed her hand on the desk. "She will be Grand Witch when my brother steps down and you will do well to show her respect."

Kara whimpered at Dora’s words.

"I think your mother needs some rest," Helena told Baron. "It’s been a long day, go tell Daniel to take you to the hotel we’ve provided."

Baron nodded as he urged his mother to go with him.

Helena could see the hesitation in his eyes, he’d been hurt by her words. She was his mother and yet the way she looked at hybrids such as them was horrible.

As much as Helena wanted to help Baron, it was up to him how to navigate his emotions toward his mother’s words.

Slowly, but reluctantly, Kara moved and got up with her son.

She didn’t even bother saying goodbye or apologizing for her actions. She simply left.

"I’m sorry, for my mother," Baron said as he stopped at the door, still holding his mother’s arm tightly. "I’m sorry for her behavior and I’d like to thank you both, Mistress Helena and Madam Theodora, for welcoming us."

"It was our pleasure," Helena said with a smile.

"I’d also just want to say, Mistress Helena, I’ve never seen power like yours," Baron told her.

Helena was at a loss for words, she simply acknowledged what he said with a nod.

Baron took it as his signal to go as he practically dragged his mother out of the office.

When the door was finally shut, Dora collapsed on the couch, worrying Helena.

"Are you alright, Grandmama Dora?" Helena said as she checked the old lady.

"I’m fine, don’t fuss," Dora sighed as she pushed Helena away. "You’re the one I should be worried about. You not only cast a difficult spell today but you also had to handle that vile woman’s insults. Damnit, I can’t use bitch or witch."

Helena laughed at Dora’s grumblings before finally sitting next to her.

"I’m used to insults," Helena shrugged. "Being a female in the Warrior Academy didn’t earn me any fans and my sexual history has always been a pain point for many Alpha males."

Dora sighed and shook her head.

"People can be vile," Dora grumbled.

"Grandmama Dora, were you serious about me potentially being the tether?" Helena asked as she looked down at her hands.

Dora closed her eyes and nodded.

"But my brother will probably kill me when he gets his hands on me for risking you like that," Dora admitted to Helena.

"It’s not like we have any other choice," Helena told Dora. "Can you think of anyone else?"

Dora shook her head.

"I was the most powerful member of the coven that was left here, and even with those that went across with your Grandfather, there are very few with more magic than I," Dora said with a sigh. "I know your magic is stronger than mine, Ronan’s probably is too and he’s just a baby."

Helena took Dora’s hands in hers and looked into her eyes.

"But you seem hesitant to this plan," Helena told Dora.

"I am, but not for the same reason as Kara’s," Dora explained to Helena. "You’ve cast spells that would kill a lesser witch. Hell that summoning spell you cast to bring Kara over would have been too much for most but you barely broke a sweat."

Helena couldn’t help the blossoming pride in her chest.

Dora’s praises assured her that her magic was enough.

"But Helena, a spell to bring your Grandfather back, to cast and anchor and be the tether that pulls him and our people back will take a lot from you," Dora explained. "It’s something we have to train for."

"Then we train for it," Helena said in a determined tone. "He should be back, plus he has to come back. He asked me to pass a message to you."

"What was it?" Dora asked, her eyes filling with worry. "Is my brother well?"

"He’s fine, Grandmama, but he said there were traitors left behind, and I think they’re the ones that are attacking my pack," Helena revealed.

"If you’re certain of being the tether, Helena, then we’ll work on getting you strong enough, together," Dora said with a fire burning in her eyes.

"Because of her mate?" Victor asked.

"He is one of her bonds to this world, yes," Dora said with a small nod as she surveyed the rooftop. "I think we’re all set."

"Really?" Helena asked, her voice shaking.

Over the past few days, Dora had recounted to her just how much power and energy it would take.

The hardest part would be latching on to her grandfather’s magic, after that things should go smoothly.

Helena felt Dora cup her face and brush a thumb over her cheek.

"You are stronger than you think," Dora told her. "You’re ready."

Helena closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"I can do this," she whispered to herself.

"The sooner we get this done the sooner you can deal with your mate," Victor reminded.

Romeo was getting on the other Alpha’s nerves. He’d been harassing Victor for access to Sunfire prior to the Blood Moon Ball. At Helena’s request, Victor had denied all of it.

"Your warriors ready to pick up any witches and warlocks that might appear in other parts of the city?" Helena asked.

"Gavin and Aaron are seeing to that," Caleb confirmed.

"And Jonathan?" Helena asked, glaring at Caleb.

The young Alpha had been given instructions to be careful should Rebecca be his mate, and with the Blood Moon so close, Helena understood the draw.

"With Rae, Rebecca, and Norris," Alyssa said, joining them. "They’re watching over Ronan."

Helena had feared that with everything going on someone would try to take her son.

With the threat of the coven traitors and the wolves that might just be after her and her mate, she wasn’t going to risk her son, even if his birth wasn’t public knowledge.

"Focus on the spell, Helena," Dora told her. "Your son is safe."

Helena nodded as she took a deep breath and entered the circle of candles that had been set up.

"Ready?" Dora asked.

"Ready," Helena said with a nod as she began chanting the spell.

She felt as the wind began to blow and thunder grumbled in the distance.

This spell was unlike anything she’d case in the past.

Unlike all the other spells where magic flowed out of her this one crept through her skin, making her want to curse at her magic.

As the wind got stronger, Helena opened her eyes. The candles around her came to life as flames appeared on their wicks.

’Helena?’ she heard a disembodied voice call.

"Grandpa!" she shouted.

’Helena, what are you doing?’ Theodore Sage demanded.

"I’m acting as the tether, Grandpa," she declared. "You have to take it and move our people."

’Dora!’ Theodore shouted as thunder rumbled and lightning struck.

"She’s the best option, Theo, the only option," Dora answered. "Now do as she damn asked and use the tether."

Theodore went silent, but not long after a portal appeared.
