Chapter 45: Calm after the storm

"Hey man are you alright?!" Harry shouted to a man that walked carefully across sand on terranix, his black curly hair flowing in the sandy breeze with soft green eyes that lit up at his arrival, his bike coming to a stop beside him.

"Yeah, I’m fine," He smiled, hopping on the back of his motorcycle behind Harry, the bike shifting under his weight "Glad you came when you did, seriously I thought I was gonna die out here!"

"No worries... say what happened to your bike anyway—" Before William even got to answer the sky started to darken around them.

They both looked up at the sudden shift, watching as each star made themselves known one after another, a giant purple light shining through the horizon filling the midnight sky in a breathtaking sight.

And for a brief moment, what seemed like a fraction of a second, the light grew brighter, before falling into absolute....

Darkness.

"Where am i..." A soft voice echoed in pitch black darkness, an amalgamation of what was once two people. His bare body floating in an empty space.

"Before you try to attack me, you should know," A voice warned, grasping their attention. His eyes landed on a man with brown hair, his grey eyes hollow and dead of intrigue, but bore bloodlust fierce enough to make their blood run cold. "I’m really strong..."

"So, you might want to surrender here," He muttered, watching their actions carefully.

"What’s this feeling..." They pondered, their hand reaching for their chest as they felt it rushing faster and faster, almost as if it was gonna burst from their chest. "Am I... am I going to die?"

They looked down to the man that stood before them, his grip on his blade tightened slightly as he awaited a response from the creature in front of him.

"I don’t want to die..." they muttered to themself, their heart beating faster and faster to the point it’s almost painful. Their fingers dug into their chest, as if wanting to tug out the disruptive organ. "It hurts, it really hurts!"

"Get out of the way!!" They roared, swiping their arm to the side, hoping to hit the brown haired man, gusts of wind flew past it, buildings crumbling at the sheer force of the attack.

"I want this feeling to stop!" They shouted. "I want it to stop, I want it to stop, I want it to stop!"

The man stares at his hand through his bangs that thrashed in the wind.

"Well, that’s the path you chose," He muttered to himself, he tilted his sword—a flick of the wrist, effortless as a sigh. The air itself seemed to fracture.

The amalgamation’s scream tore through the chaos, raw and guttural, as the winds around their arm turned inward.

Flesh unraveled like thread from a spindle, sinew snapping in wet, crimson ribbons. Bones—pale and glistening—emerged, stripped clean in the span of a heartbeat. The stench of iron flooded the air, thick enough to choke on.

Blood splattered against the walls, the amalgamation’s eyes snapping to the wound. "That hurt—" they muttered, tears pricking the corners of their eyes. "That– I...no–"

Words hung in their throat, eyes snapping back to the man who sheathed his blade in calm silence, his eyes closing shut as he awaited for the beast to move,

"Now!" they shouted, attacking as fast as they could with their remaining limbs, but even that remained futile. An invisible force tore at the creature’s flesh, and by the time the sword was already drawn, splashes of red painted their vision.

The wind around them howled, tearing into the beast over and over, sawing into its tough hide, even as it screamed, they begged for it to stop but it was all over in almost an instant.

The creature falls with a loud splat, piles and piles of loose flesh and blood staining the streets as the man walks closer. He dug his arm into the beast’s hide, grabbing the man by the throat and tugging him out of the creature’s protective outer shell.

"I’ll make it quick..." He promised softly, raising his sword to finish the job, he took a soft breath, striking down on them with a loud stab to the neck, watching as they choke on their own blood in their rest. Crimson leaking out of the wound like a fountain to the earth below.

"Threat neutralized..." He muttered, putting his blade away. His eyes turned to Takashi who just continued to watch in awe. "I suggest you head back, and wait for further instructions..."

"Are you alright..." Fiona muttered, wiping the tears from her eyes as she approached Takashi, his head hung low and his arms digging into the ground.

"Why didn’t you run..." He pondered, the individual strands from his messy hair hiding his face, she couldn’t tell what emotion he held, though even without his bangs, she doubted it’d make a difference.

"I didn’t want to see you dead—" She murmured, her eyes softened only to be interrupted.

"You should follow orders!" He snapped, his fingers dug into the dirt until clumps of mud and dust rested within his palms.

"Excuse you?! You’re not the boss here—"

"I don’t give a fuck!" His words bubbled over, his body shaking at each word as if just shouting wasn’t enough. Silence bleeding into the destroyed battleground, the sound of the wind blowing dust into the sky could be heard, until his softer, more broken voice gave light. "If something happened to Elliot...what then—"

"You left him for me, he could be seriously hurt and you wouldn’t even know–" The man slowly got up, Fiona’s gaze stuck on him, her eyes filled with shock and a bit of sorrow, tears teasing her eyelids ready to spill over.

"You know, you act all cool and collected, but you’re more narrow minded than me—" He sighed, walking past her without another word. She couldn’t find it in herself to talk back, or find the strength to even hold her head up.

The sound of his crunching footsteps echoing in her ears like a soft taunt.
