Chapter 69: Meeting the Xu Clan Matriarch
Chapter 69: Meeting the Xu Clan Matriarch
Golden Stone City
A luxurious carriage entered the city, and all eyes were on it. The lifelike carvings on the carriage and the bold insignia in golden and red colors spoke volumes of the person inside the carriage.
"Who do you think is inside the carriage?"
"How would I know?"
"I guess it must be an important person."
"Fool. Of course, it is an important person. Do you think an ordinary person could afford that type of expensive carriage?"
On the street, the people gathered in twos and threes, discussing the luxurious carriage. Their faces were covered in envy and admiration.
As for the carriage, it went toward the eastern part of the city. The eastern part of the city was where the affluent clans were located.
Slowly, the carriage stopped before a massive estate. On the entrance was a plaque:
’The Xu Clan’
From beside the coach driver, a sturdy man jumped down and approached the unguarded gate. The man knocked twice and waited.
Creak!
The door was pushed open, and a middle-aged man appeared.
"Who are you, and what do you want with my Xu Clan?" His voice was filled with hostility.
The sturdy man ignored the man’s hostility and responded, "My young master wants to see your Clan Master. Please, announce our presence."
When the middle-aged man heard this, he creased his brow and looked behind the sturdy man. Looking at the luxurious carriage, he was shocked.
’Who would spend so much money on a mere carriage?’ he exclaimed in his heart.
"Please wait a moment. Let me ask the Clan Master."
With that, he left hastily to report the situation.
After a minute, the man returned.
"The Clan Master is willing to see your young master."
His eyes were filled with curiosity as he wanted to see who was inside such an extravagant carriage.
Slowly, the door to the carriage was opened, and a young man dressed in a golden robe, laced with red lining, came down.
Looking at the handsome young man, the middle-aged man was stunned, and his jaw dropped slightly.
In the whole city, there wasn’t any young man as good-looking as this young man walking toward him.
With the young man a couple of feet from him, he recovered from his daze and cleared his throat as he led the way inside the estate.
Seated inside the grand hall, Mo Jian did not touch the tea the servant served him. His expression was calm; no one could guess what was going on in his mind.
Suddenly, he heard light footsteps coming from the entrance. Without looking, he knew two people were coming.
"Young man, I heard you wanted to see me?" A cold, commanding voice echoed in the hall.
"Yes, Matriarch Xu," Mo Jian said, raising his head.
’Huh!’
The Matriarch stopped in her tracks when she saw Mo Jian’s face. Beside her was a young woman dressed in a black robe with two daggers hanging on her waist.
Both of them were stunned when they saw the visitor.
Who would have expected their visitor would be the young master of the Dust Valley Sect? Quickly, the Matriarch recovered and adjusted her composure.
"Ah. Sorry for keeping you waiting." Her cold, commanding voice had long vanished, replaced with a respectful tone.
"If the young master had told us of your visit, we would have made arrangements beforehand."
Looking at the untouched tea, the Matriarch felt a cold sweat run down her spine. ’We’re finished! How could we serve him such ordinary tea?’ she exclaimed in her heart.
Standing beside the Matriarch, the young woman was stunned. This was the first time she had seen her grandma act like this.
’What’s so fearsome about him? He’s just the Dust Valley Sect Master’s son. And so what?’
She couldn’t accept this but knew it was not her place to speak.
Unknown to the thoughts of the Matriarch and her granddaughter, Mo Jian responded calmly,
"Matriarch Xu, it is this young master that came unannounced. It’s not your fault."
"Young Master is magnanimous." She breathed a sigh of relief and turned to look at her granddaughter and commanded, "What are you doing? Greet the young master."
"I’ve seen the Young Master," Xu Lian greeted with a light bow.
"Haha. We don’t have to stand on ceremony with each other." Mo Jian laughed. "Matriarch Xu, I have something important to discuss with you."
He went straight to the point. This act of trying to please him was getting on his nerves.
"Oh? What would the young master want from this old woman?" she said and took a seat opposite him.
As for the main seat at the center of the hall, she did not dare sit on it.
"Xu Lian, go and practice your dagger technique," she said just as she took her seat.
"Yes, Grandma." Xu Lian looked at Mo Jian one last time before she left the hall.
Mo Jian did not see the hostility in her face as he concentrated on the Matriarch.
"So, Young Master..." Matriarch Xu started.
"I want your clan to work for me." He went straight to the point.
’Huh!’
Matriarch Xu gasped. She widened her eyes, not expecting such a direct response from him.
But as the leader of a clan, she recovered quickly. "Why would the young master want this old woman’s weak clan?"
She did not refuse the request immediately.
"Because you come from the lineage of an assassin."
The Matriarch was not shocked when she heard this. She knew it was simple for them to dig out the history of her clan.
Even though it was less than ten years since they moved to the Western Region, such a secret could not be hidden.
"With your power and wealth, I don’t believe you can’t kill anyone in this Western Region," she responded, staring straight into his eyes.
"You’re right," Mo Jian nodded, not denying it.
With his wealth, he just needed to mention the name and it would be done—as long as it was in the Western Region.
Alas...
He took a scroll from his storage pouch. "I believe Matriarch Xu understands this scroll."
"The Assembly Summit Scroll!" she said immediately.
How could she not know the scroll?
She had seen it many times in the past. There was a period when her clan was trying desperately to receive such an invitation.
Unfortunately, before they could grow strong enough, misfortune befell them.
"I knew the Matriarch would know the scroll. So, you understand what it means."
"Yes..." she nodded.
"If you work for me, I promise to select three of your clansmen to join the team. Apart from that, I’ll support your clan financially."
"Also, I feel Matriarch Xu was injured—but it works for me. I’ll cure your injury and help you to break through to the Golden Core realm."
’Huh!’
Matriarch Xu sucked in a cold breath. She could not control her racing heart. Indeed, she was injured and her cultivation had regressed from the peak of Core Refining to the early stage.
However, the cure for her injury was too expensive, and her clan could not afford it. Besides, they had to hide from their clan enemies.
Apart from curing her injury, Mo Jian’s financial backing was paramount to their clan’s survival.
Just thinking of the three rewards, she was ecstatic—but managed to control her expression.
She pretended to be thinking for a few minutes before she responded calmly,
"Before I accept, how long will my clan serve you?"
"50 years," Mo Jian responded without thinking.
Fifty years was nothing to a cultivator. A Golden Core cultivator had a lifespan of more than 300 years, and with many precious resources, they could extend their lifespan close to five hundred years.
"I agree." She said and stood up to give a deep bow to Mo Jian.
A sign her clan had surrendered to Mo Jian command.
