Chapter 52: Challenge Goes The Wrong Way!
Mo Jian stepped out of the Refining Hall and looked at the crowd with a calm expression.
His silver hair swayed gently in the wind, and his blue eyes pierced through the crowd like a vulture’s gaze before he turned to Deng Jie.
"Why are you shouting?"
Deng Jie sneered and wanted to respond, but Mo Jian spoke again before he could.
"Who are you? Don’t you know this is the Refining Hall? Such noise could disrupt the disciples inside."
His tone was calm, almost indifferent.
His demeanor and confidence shocked most of the core disciples.
They had heard countless negative rumors about the sect master’s son and had never expected him to be this composed and charismatic.
Under the pressure of so many core disciples and the gathered crowd, most disciples would have been nervous and overwhelmed. But that wasn’t the case for him.
Sensing that he was losing his momentum, Deng Jie’s sneer deepened.
"You might not know, since you’re the trash of the sect, but I am the chief disciple of the inner court—"
"So what?" Mo Jian interrupted once again. "I am the sect master’s son. How dare you throw your chief title before me? Do you want to lose it?"
"Huh?"
The crowd was stunned by Mo Jian’s domineering response.
This wasn’t the Mo Jian they thought they knew.
Although they heard rumors that he was the mastermind behind the Thousand Wealth Chamber and the Blood Fury Arena, they looked down on him, assuming he was the weakest disciple in the sect.
But now, they realized how wrong they had been.
However, Deng Jie wasn’t ready to back down.
"Just because you’re the sect master’s son, do you think you have the authority to strip me of my title? You must be delusional."
A smile that was not a smile appeared on Mo Jian’s face. "I suppose you still think this is the same old Dust Valley Sect."
He turned to Elder Luo Zhen and Elder Bai Delan. "Elders, do I have the authority to revoke his title as the inner court’s chief disciple?"
Both Elder Luo Zhen and Elder Bai Delan nodded.
"Of course, you can. After all, you are the sect master’s son."
"What?!"
Deng Jie felt a wave of disbelief wash over him, as if the ground beneath his feet had suddenly shifted.
The core and inner disciples exchanged bewildered glances, their expressions a mix of shock and disbelief.
How could this be possible?
Zou Mei’s mouth was slightly ajar. She had come to watch Mo Jian make a fool of himself, but the scene before her was beyond her imagination.
Mo Jian observed the stunned expressions around him and sneered inwardly. Tsk! You’re all so naive, thinking you could intimidate me into a useless brawl.
"I’ll let you go this time. But next time, if you dare act insolently in my presence, you can forget about your title as the chief disciple."
Deng Jie was too shocked to react. His plan to humiliate Mo Jian had shattered before it even began.
Now, who was the joke?
Mo Jian ignored him and turned to the core disciples.
"Are you here to challenge me as well?" he asked with a smile, his gaze sweeping across them.
At the forefront stood Peng Zhao, who had been silently observing the exchange. Though his expression remained neutral, inwardly, he was quite shocked.
Seeing the two elders supporting Mo Jian, he realized things were far more complicated than they had assumed.
He looked at Mo Jian and was startled to find that he couldn’t see through him at all.
How is this possible?! he exclaimed in his heart.
Despite his shock, he kept his voice steady. "I have no problem with you becoming the captain, but you must prove that you have what it takes to lead us."
Hearing this, the other core disciples nodded in agreement.
Mo Jian clicked his tongue. "Who was the captain last year?"
"Jing Wang," Peng Zhao replied calmly.
"And before that?"
"Me," Peng Zhao said, his voice brimming with confidence.
Mo Jian sneered. "And how did you perform? You lost so miserably that the sect disciples were too ashamed to leave the sect for days."
Peng Zhao and the core disciples froze, their expressions turning ugly.
But Mo Jian wasn’t finished.
"With many strong captains before me, you all lost so disgracefully that the sect’s reputation suffered. And now, you dare to rush here, questioning the sect’s decision just because I look weak?"
"Are you looking down on me, or on the sect elders? I want to know what gives you the audacity to question their decision."
Hearing this, the core disciples realized that Mo Jian was pushing them into a corner. Things were escalating beyond their control.
But they weren’t as easily manipulated by words as Deng Jie had been.
"Mo Jian—"
"Call me Senior Brother," Mo Jian interrupted.
"What?!" The female core disciple widened her eyes in disbelief.
Not just her—every core disciple was stunned, including Peng Zhao.
Peng Zhao’s expression turned solemn.
"Mo Jian—"
"Call me Senior Brother," Mo Jian repeated.
"You’re taking this too far!" Peng Zhao shouted angrily.
How dare he look down on them?
"What? I became a disciple before most of you. So what’s wrong with asking you to call me Senior Brother?" Mo Jian said calmly.
Elder Luo Zhen and Elder Bai Delan were momentarily surprised, but then they shook their heads.
Against Mo Jian’s sharp tongue, these disciples stood no chance at all.
They had long heard about his venomous wit, but now, witnessing it firsthand, they realized just how dangerous it was.
With just a few words, he had led the disciples by the nose.
A male disciple, furious, roared, "You’re just a mortal-rank disciple! How dare you ask us to call you Senior Brother?"
"Who are you?" Mo Jian asked coldly. "When speaking to me, you don’t shout. Also, remember to call me Senior Brother. Otherwise, I won’t let it slide."
He turned back to Peng Zhao. "So, Junior Brother Peng, is there anything else you want to ask? As you can see, I’m quite busy with the elders."
The core disciples were speechless. They realized they couldn’t keep up with Mo Jian. Against such a sharp tongue, how could they possibly win?
Peng Zhao glared at Mo Jian for a moment before speaking in an icy tone.
"This isn’t over."
With that, he turned to leave, only to hear Mo Jian’s voice behind him.
"You’re right. This isn’t over. You’ll hear from me soon."
Mo Jian cast a glance at the stunned crowd before sauntering back into the Refining Hall.
