Chapter 62: Kira’s Mess-Up

(Casey’s POV)

I stopped in the middle of the lobby, holding the phone to my ear as I listened intently, "what did you just say?"

"I think I messed up, Casey," Kira repeated.

"Okay, I want you to take a deep breath and talk to me," I said. "What happened? Did Maven contact you again?"

There was a pause as if she was thinking about what to say, then she replied, "No. Not yet."

I sucked in a deep breath, "Maven hasn’t reached out since yesterday?"

"I just said no, didn’t you hear me?"

"Okay, just calm down. You have to tell me what the problem is. What is going on, Kira?"

"It’s Jace..."

I switched the phone to my other hand, trying to get more comfortable, "Jace? What is it this time around?"

"Well... you know that he..."

Just then, I heard a loud commotion behind me. I turned just in time to see some nurses wheeling an injured patient into the hospital. I limped out of the way just in time as the nurses rattled off medical terms and called for a medical doctor.

"Casey, where are you?" Kira asked over the phone.

I looked around and made my way to the waiting room where I lowered myself into a chair. I sighed with relief, happy to have taken the weight off my injured leg.

"Casey, talk to me!"

"I’m sorry, I’m right here."

"Where is that?"

"I’m at a hospital right now," I told her.

"My God... are you okay?"

I nodded as I pinched the bridge of my nose, shutting my eyes so the headache in my head could subside a bit, "I’m fine."

"If you’re at the hospital, then you’re not fine."

"It’s not a big deal, okay? We have to talk about what is going on with you. You were about to tell–"

"Are you seriously going to keep things from me?" Kira asked, sounding hurt. "Come on, I thought we’re closer than that? So, you’re at the hospital and you won’t even tell me why?"

I stifled a curse, "I hurt myself okay? Just a flesh wound, nothing much."

"Jesus! Did this happen because you went in search of Maven? Did that bastard hurt you?"

"No, it wasn’t Maven. And the fact that I’m in a hospital should tell you that I’m fine."

"No," Kira disagreed. "The fact that you’re at the hospital tells me that the injury was bad enough to require a trip to there. What hospital are you in?"

"You don’t have to come! I already said that I’m fine!" I barked into the phone, feeling panic rise in my chest. The last thing I wanted was for her to come here and find Jace with me. Kira could be very perceptive and any little clue we gave her and she would figure out that Jace and I were lovers. Especially now that we were no longer fighting. "Please, just stay where you are."

There was silence on the phone for a while and this time, I cursed myself.

"Kira," I muttered weakly. "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to raise my voice."

"No... it’s okay. I understand what you’re going through."

"You do?"

"Yeah," Kira said. "Just uhm... take care of yourself, okay? And make sure the wound doesn’t get infected."

"Okay, thanks. Uhm... you were about to tell me something. You said it was about Jace."

"Oh... yeah. That’s correct."

There was a few moments of prolonged silence until I had to speak up, "Kira?"

"Yes?" Her response was jerked as if I had roused her from a daydream. She was beginning to act weird.

"What is going on? Talk to me."

"Oh... you’re right. Nothing is going on, I’m fine."

"Come on..." I said exasperatedly. "You and I know you’re only saying that because I told you not to come here. You already told me that you messed up, so what’s going on? How did you mess up?"

"No, it has nothing to do with you. I’m fine, I promise."

"I don’t believe you, but can you at least tell me what it was that you wanted to tell me earlier on? Before we got interrupted?"

This was followed by another bout of silence. Kira was acting really weird, in a way that I had never seen before. Was something else going on with her? Did this have to do with Maven? Did it have to do with her secret boyfriend? What exactly was making her so weird today?

"You’re right," she said eventually. "Something is wrong, I did mess up big time."

I gave a sigh of relief, "Talk to me girl, you know I’m here for you, right?"

"With everything that has been happening, I’ve been forgetting something that could be really important in the long run. I can’t believe that I’ve not thought about it in such a long time."

"Okay, so what is it?"

"Jace’s side chick," she said somberly.

I sat up in the chair, gripping my phone hard, "what did you say?"

"You heard me, the girl that Jace has been fucking."

"Kira, we don’t have time for this, we have bigger problems on our hands, have you forgotten?"

"I know, but we’re not gonna sweep this under the rug. I’ve allowed it to go on for so long and it’s going to come to an end."

"Oh, it is?" I asked heatedly, "How do you plan to do that?"

"I’ll make him leave her. There should be no secrets between Jace and I if we’re going to be wed, right?"

"Secrets? What about you, Kira?"

"Uhm... what do you mean?"

"What are your secrets? The reason Maven targeted you?"

"What the hell Casey, whose side are you on?" Kira blared.

"I can’t do this right now, okay?" I said exasperatedly. I was just sick and tired of it all.

She was in a secret relationship, yet she was still trying to stop Jace from having one of his own. What kind of person was she? Yeah, Jace was cheating on her, but then so was she. Why then was she coming hard after him? I always knew that Kira was controlling, but this seemed to be taking it all to a whole new level.

"Casey, what are you saying?"

"I uhm... have to go to my doctor. I’ll call you when I get home, okay?"

"Don’t cut the call! I’m not done talking to you-"

I cut the call!

As the phone went dead in my grip, I could see my fingers were trembling from anger. Was this going to be the first time I’d be fighting with Kira? Was I really going to fight her because of a man? Was I willing to risk my friendship with her all so I can be with Jace?
