Chapter 61: The Power Of Love
Chapter 61: The Power Of Love
(Casey’s POV)

Ethan followed us until we got to the highway, we drove for some distance before Jace pulled the car over to the side of the road. I looked around, the place was busy and we had stopped directly in front of a clean and properly kept street. A welcome sight from the ghetto looks of Ramon’s environment.
"Uhm..." Jace muttered as he too looked around. "Are you sure I can’t take you in? You don’t have to walk, you know?"
"Nah..." Ethan replied as he opened the door. "Believe me, I’m good. I don’t want them to see you, or the car. My old colleagues have never stopped teasing me for working for the richest man on earth, if they find out you drove me to the station, I would never hear the end of it."
Jace only scoffed, "I’m not the richest on earth. At least not yet."
"So, how long will this take you?" I asked him.
"I don’t know. It all depends on how easy it is to dig up on this guy. For now, we have two numbers to dig into, we need to see what we’d get from the number. And I’m not forgetting the footage from Eazy Bacon... it seems I’ve got my work cut out for me."
I shifted slightly in the seat, "it’ll all be over very soon."
He smiled wryly and then stepped out of the car, closing the door quietly behind him. He leaned Jace’s window and peered at him, "Promise me you’re not gonna do anything stupid."
"I promise," Jace said at once, causing Ethan to roll his eyes, "come on, I’m being serious here."
"Then why don’t I believe you?"
"That’s your problem, not mine."
"Where are you going after you take Casey to the hospital?"
"I don’t know yet, I’ll probably figure that out when we get there. I’m thinking of calling Thorne though, we’d need to go see..." Jace stopped talking for a few seconds as he glanced at me. It was a very brief move, one so smooth that I wouldn’t have noticed if I wasn’t looking directly at him. He cleared his throat and continued, "We need to see Leo and finalize everything."
I glanced at him, I had noted the way he hesitated before speaking and wondered the meaning. Was he doing something with Leo? Was it secretive enough that he couldn’t tell me? I shifted in my seat and looked out through the windshield, giving them time to continue the rest of their conversation.
However, Ethan decided then that he was done. With a wave at both of us, he stepped away from the car and walked into the street. He was headed to the police station in the area. Back when he was a cop, this was the precinct he had been assigned to. And he was hoping to utilize the friends he still had there to find answers to our problem that was currently eating us up.
With Ethan dropped off, Jace started the car once more and pulled back into the major road. He floored the pedal and began to weave through the traffic. He was pushing the car to its limit, taking it even faster than I did in the morning.
"You know that we’re not flying to the hospital, right?" I said after a while.
He only grinned as he shifted gears and increased the speed even more, "please let me have this. I don’t always get to drive. Ethan and the rest of my security team have that covered. So, just let me have this."
"Well, judging by your actions, they have a valid reason for not letting you drive, and it’s not for your safety."
He gave me a quick glance before he turned back to the road, "what do you mean?"
"Come on, do you know what it would mean if you hit someone? A billionaire like you slamming your car into someone else’s? Once they know that you’re a rich folk, their next idea would be to sue you for emotional and physical damages. Hoping to make quick bucks off you."
Jace only chuckled at that, "Come on, Casey, at least give me some credit. Do you seriously think I don’t know that?"
"Well, if you do why then are you driving like a maniac?"
Just then, with a squeal of tires, he switched through the lanes. Zipping past a sedan and going toe to toe before overtaking a jeep. However, he didn’t stop there, it was as if he was in a race, and the competition was every other car on the road.
"Jace!" I cried.
With an exasperated breath, he began to apply the brakes, "fine. Are you happy now? There’s a reason there are no speed limits on the highway, you know? You can go as fast as you want."
"I’m sorry," I told him. "I already had one near-death experience today, I’m not looking for another."
At that, he swallowed as he turned to me, "I’m so sorry Casey. That was so foolish of me."
"No... don’t be," I told him as I took his free hand. "You and I were in the situation. Just because he held the knife to my neck doesn’t mean your life wasn’t in danger."
Jace squeezed his face as he made a show of remembering the chaotic moment, "Nah... I don’t think I was ever at such great risk."
"What?" I laughed. "Is this your ego speaking? I clearly remember you getting tossed into the side of the car, the sound your body made first against the car and then when you hit the ground. My God... it was sick."
He only grinned, not taking his eyes off the road, "Yeah, but I got up, didn’t I?"
"After I woke you up! You were knocked out for some good seconds there..." I reminded him as I squeezed his hand.
He noticed my expression and smiled cheesily, "What is it?"
I smirked as I looked away, "it’s nothing."
"Come on, after everything we’ve been through, you can tell me anything."
"It’s just..." I let out a deep breath. "I love this. We both had such a harrowing experience, but we’re able to laugh about it hours later and move on. For Ethan, I can understand that due to his background as a police officer, he’s used to such kind of violence. But not for me... this is the first time someone actively tried to kill me. Yet, I’m here admiring how good you look while handling the wheel."
"Aww... that’s so sweet." Jace said, "But I get what you’re saying. I guess the reason it’s so easy for us is because we have each other. Casey, when you’re with the person you love, some things just don’t have as much power over you. Whatever trauma our fight with Ramon could have caused, our love is stronger than it. The joy and happiness of knowing that you’re good and safe makes it easier to ignore how close I came to losing you."
"I feel the same way, Jace." I told him, "With all my heart."
He licked his lip, "this feels like a moment that calls for a kiss. I’ll find a parking spot right now and kiss the shit out of you."
"What? No!" I laughed out loud, wrenching my hand from his. "Please, take me to the hospital."
As he continued driving, I spoke again, "uhm... I did see a new part of you today. I didn’t know you could fight like that. How come?"
"By training," he said simply. "I’m a blackbelt in multiple fighting techniques. I’ve been fighting since I was a kid."
"What? Why then do you need security when you can kick ass all by yourself?"
"If I can avoid it, I’d rather outsource. Besides, it’s not every problem that you can punch and kick your way out of. Sometimes, the security team is good for controlling the crowd, taking my place in the event of an accident like you mentioned, and other things."
"Wow... there sure are a lot of perks to being a billionaire."
"You have no idea." He replied as he began to slow the car further.
With a blast of horn, he turned the car into another street and drove for some minutes before pulling into the parking lot of the hospital. This was one of the most expensive hospitals in Silicon Valley and it was also the most exclusive. People paid so much money for their privacy here and it was taken seriously. I have a doctor here and he was the one I was going to see.
Jace drove as close to the hospital as possible before coming to a halt and killing the engine. He looked at the swinging doors and shook his head.
"Are you sure about this?" He demanded, "I can take you in, I don’t care."
"I do." I snapped. "I already told you to stop treating me like I’m made of glass."
He nodded subtly, "I’m sorry. But you have to make me a promise," he took my hand. "If anything happens, you’d call me at once."
I nodded, "I promise."
I was about to open the door and step out when he leaned over and kissed me deeply. I kissed him back for a few seconds before pulling away, "I have to go."
I stepped out of the car and began to limp towards the swinging doors. However, as I closed in on the doors, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I pulled it out and I frowned when I saw Kira’s name plastered on the screen. I remembered then that I had texted her for Maven’s number but she was yet to send it. If she had sent it when I asked, Ethan would have taken it and compared it with the number we had gotten from Ramon’s phone.
I felt angry at my best friend, especially because I knew that she was keeping a major secret from me about her boyfriend. I knew that I didn’t deserve to be mad at her, considering I was also keeping a major secret from her. Yet... she was my best friend.
With a sigh, I answered the call and placed the phone to my ear, "I just fucked up big time, Casey."
At once, I felt a big thud in my chest.
Kira, what have you done this time?
