Chapter 60: "I Don’t Trust The Rich Folk!"
Chapter 60: "I Don’t Trust The Rich Folk!"
(Casey’s POV)
________
"You get it now, don’t you?" Ramon said after a while.
I could see now why Joan had reached out to me and told me about the break-in at the hall and why she also showed me all the evidence. It was just a modus operandi for her. By pretending to work with us, it would never cross our minds that she was working with Maven.
It would have been a perfect plan, but with Ramon, things were different. Something didn’t add up.
"Why then did she fire you?" I asked.
"Because for the first time, I decided to do it on my own. I didn’t tell her about the guy, or the money. I simply acted on my own. And she didn’t like that."
"Okay, if you were to tell her, how would it work?"
"Usually, when we’re approached by the reporters, we refer them to Joan and she discusses with them. She makes them pay a huge amount of money for their job. Anyone who tries to do this without her knowledge would get serious docks in their pay."
"But that didn’t stop you," Ethan said.
"I told you, the money was pretty mouthwatering. That’s what pissed her off the most, the fact that I went behind her to let the stalkers in. And the amount of money that I was promised. This woman is rich as fuck, she owns a part of the hotel and the hall, why would she care that I’m given three thousand dollars? And what did she do? She fired me! Just like that."
"But why then were you running?"
"She said a number of things to me, she threatened to come after me with the entire might of the Royale Hotel. With her lawyers and private investigators. She threatened to make it public that I was responsible for everything, not just with Jace and Kira, but all the reporters and bloggers that had snuck into the hotel in the past, she threatened to make it my fault. Do you know how many celebrities and rich folk that we’ve fucked up that way? If they all learned that I was responsible, they could come after me! So, I did the only thing I could; I ran."
Ramon stopped as he sucked in a deep breath, "Or I was going to until I saw you. The moment I saw you, I knew you were here because of the stalker. However, Joan’s threat was still fresh in my mind. So I tried to run from you, but you just wouldn’t leave me alone. I just wanna be left alone. I’m done dealing with you rich folks, I’m leaving Silicon Valley and I’m not coming back."
I sucked in a deep breath, "okay then. We’re not going to stop you from leaving. You’ve already done more than enough by telling us everything."
"No," Ethan said. "He’s not done enough, not by a long shot. I still need to know the guy who spoke to you. What’s his name? How did he give you the money? Was it cash? Cheque?"
"He didn’t give me a name, but he only gave cash," Ramon replied crisply.
"In what bills?"
"Fucking hundreds okay? He gave me hundred dollar bills, all wrapped nicely in an envelope."
"Where is the envelope?"
Ramon paused at that, "why do you need that?"
"Just answer the damn question."
"I threw it in the trash, I think," Ramon said.
Ethan made his way over to the trash can placed close to the back door. He emptied the contents on the floor and began to rifle through it. There were a few days worth of trash and it was beginning to give off a bad odor. Ethan used the toe of his boot to filter through. And sure enough, he found a brown envelope crumpled among all the trash. He then used two fingers to pick it up and placed it in a nylon bag he found in a cupboard. He then slipped it into his pocket.
"Now, tell us about this man," Ethan said when he returned. "What can you remember about him?"
"Well, he’s tall and really pale. His hair is blonde, kinda like Jace’s but way blonder. He was always wearing a hat, but that didn’t make a difference. His voice also, it’s a bit raspy when he speaks."
"Okay, thank you."
"Can I go now? I already told you everything."
Ethan and Jace exchanged a glance, it was clear that Ramon had revealed everything that he could. We had to start looking for this mystery guy. It was clear that he was one of those who had either stayed in front of Kira’s room or followed Jace’s convoy on the night of the dinner. With a shrug, Ethan began to loosen his binds.
"Hold on though," I muttered. "You were fighting so hard to get out of here, what made you change your mind? Why did you tell us everything so easily?"
"What else is there to do?" He asked, "I wake up to find myself bound to my chair in a locked house and three strangers who have enough reasons to hate me and could possibly kill me. What could I gain by keeping quiet? Who was I protecting? Joan who fired me or the bumfuck who still hasn’t given me my money?"
I shook my head, "we were never going to kill you, Ramon. We’re not killers!"
"Well, I know better than to trust the words of you rich folk. You have enough money and power to kill someone like me and make it so that no one ever thinks of me again. And seeing how I’ve been fucked over by two rich folks in the past two days, forgive me if I don’t take you at your word."
Finally free, Ramon got to his feet. He looked around the room and saw his upturned box and the way Ethan had turned it inside out.
"Come on, man." He groaned.
"We’re so sorry about the mess," I said. I then reached out to Jace and squeezed his hand. He stared at me in shock but I squeezed harder until he got the message. He took out some hundred dollar bills from his pocket and gave them to Ramon.
"Sorry for the mess," he echoed my words. He then looked at me, "Let’s go."
He pulled me up and with his hand around my waist supporting me, I walked out of Ramon’s house. We began to walk towards where my car was parked.
"Your keys?" Jace said.
Without a word, I pulled them out and handed them over. Beside us, Ethan checked his watch, "There’s still time, what’s your plan?"
"Casey needs to get to the hospital," Jace said. "And before you say anything, I won’t go in with her, she’ll do that herself. But I’m taking her there and I’ll be there until she’s done."
I felt my heart melt as I looked at him, I had missed having Jace dote over me. I suddenly felt the urge to kiss him. However, Ethan spoke up, "okay then. I’m afraid I will have to leave you two for a while. I need to go see that analyst, so I can get the numbers that we lifted off Maven’s phone in the footage. I also want to look into Eazy Bacon, the spot where Ramon met that guy. If I can get my hands on their footage, we might have a picture of the guy that gave him this money."
"And the envelope you took?" I asked.
"For fingerprints. I would give it to my cop friend to run it through the system. I’m expecting only Ramon and my fingerprint to be on it, anyone else would be Maven."
"Good," I nodded as we stopped beside my car. "Does this mean that by the end of today, we’ll know who Maven is?"
Ethan nodded enthusiastically, "You’re damn right! It’s time to uncover this motherfucker!"
