Chapter 44: Difficult Choices
Chapter 44: Difficult Choices
(KIRA’S POV)
______________
"Are you out of your fucking mind?" Lena screamed as she leaped off the bed and snatched my phone out of my hand. "What the hell is wrong with you?!"
"What are you talking about?" I demanded. "Jace is working with my uncle to steal my company, and you expect me to simply sit by and do nothing?"
"What exactly were you planning on doing? Call him?"
"Of course!" I agreed, "I have to know why he would betray me like this."
"Are you serious right now?" Lena’s hands fell to her side.
"Give me my phone," I reached for it but she stepped away, taking it out of my reach.
"I can’t believe you’ll do this to me! I just told you that my life would be destroyed if it was found out that I told you such sensitive information and the first thing you want to do is call Jace. My boss! How the hell are you going to tell him that you found out?"
I stopped then, "fuck... I didn’t think of that. But it’s alright, I’d say that I got it from the grapevine. A little birdie told me. There’s no way he would trace it back to you."
"I’m the only one he told, even his secretary wasn’t in the office when he told me. So, it doesn’t matter if you got it from a grapevine or a fucking bird. He would know that I spilled the fucking secrets! If you confront him, you’re destroying my life before you can give me that protection that you’ve promised me."
I felt all the air leave my body as I fell to the bed. It was as if I was suddenly deflated. I was tired of everything. All the scheming and planning. Just as I was trying to get what was rightfully mine, there were people out there who were going out of their way to keep it from me.
But I couldn’t just sit back and allow such a travesty happen, I had to fight it.
"What if I say Uncle Leo told me?" I suggested.
"Then, Uncle Leo has to tell you for real," Lena replied. "That way, if Jace calls your uncle for confirmation, he wouldn’t figure it out."
"What are you saying?" I asked as I blanched. "You want me to go the headquarters? To see my uncle? Come on, babe. I’d rather eat nails soaked in pig’s blood."
"Well, I could say the same about me having to go to the Royale Hotel, but here we are. We have to do things that we’re not comfortable with. Besides, you’re only just going to see your uncle. Yeah, he might be a douche, but he’s still your family and when you leave there, you’d still be family. My case is very different. When I leave the Royale, I could be without a job."
At that moment, I shifted in the bed, getting closer to her. Seeing the risks I was having Lena take for me, I felt a lurch in my heart. I took her hands and slowly raised them to my lips so I could kiss them.
"My love," I whispered. "I’m sorry that I’m making you do these tough things. Telling me confidential things, having you go to places you don’t want to..."
"Well," she shrugged. "It’s needed, right? It’s all because there is no other choice, isn’t that what you said?"
I nodded, "everything we’re doing is important. I assure you that in the future, it will all make sense. We’d look back on these hard times and smile at the lengths we had to go through just to get our happiness."
She laughed then, besides, "It’s not as if this is the first time."
"Oh..." I muttered with a smile of my own. "Telling me about Jace’s side chic was nice, but it hasn’t yielded any fruit just yet."
"I told you that because you were demanding I tell you something about him."
"And you still don’t know who she is?" I asked.
She shook her head, "whoever she is, he’s hiding her well. But I know for sure that there’s a woman in his life, I just don’t know who she is."
This time, I was the one to shake my head, "I can’t believe that it’s only been a few days since my major problem with this marriage was that Jace had a side chic and I was terrified that he was going to create a scandal and ruin the opportunity for us."
"In just a few days, so many things have changed," Lena agreed.
"So many things," I echoed. "My uncle told me I needed a dick to be able to run Beacon, I’m dealing with a blackmailer, and now if care is not taken, Jace and Casey will find out about our relationship. This is all my fault, Lena."
"Hey..." she said as she came closer to me. She took my face in her hands, cradled it, and held me close, "you shouldn’t say that."
"But it’s the truth! I was so focused on trying to stop Jace from making a scandal, I never thought that I would be the one to make it. I got so arrogant, and look at where we are now!"
"You can’t take the blame for this!" She said, "The only person to blame here is Maven and your uncle. That’s all. We’re going to be fine, I promise you."
I smiled weakly at her, "Shouldn’t I be the one making that promise?"
"It’s an obligation for me and you, just as you’re trying your best, so would I." Just then, she leaned in close and kissed me deeply.
I kissed her back with as much fervor, allowing my arms to wrap around her petite frame as she crushed her breasts against mine through the thin silk of her nightie. As our tongues met in a fiery dance of passion, I moaned against her mouth, feeling all the tension and strain of the moment ebb away through my pores. I cupped her buttocks, squeezing them sensuously, and was about to change our position on the bed when she pulled away.
"No..." she said as she leaped off the bed. "I have to go to the Royale, remember?"
With a chuckle, she hurried off to the bathroom and slammed the door shut behind her.
I stared after her and gave a chuckle of my own, Lena had been surprising me all morning. I fell to the bed, staring at the ceiling as our conversation replayed in my head. So many things were happening at once, where the hell was I supposed to start?
Should I tackle Maven? Or should I focus on the contract and my uncle? What about Jace? Should I focus instead on stopping him and Casey from finding Maven?
"What the hell is a girl to do?" I muttered with a grunt.
Just then, as I lay in my bed, staring at my white ceiling, an idea began to form in my head. I realized then that there was a way I could take care of all my problems in one smooth strike. And thankfully, it worked well with my initial plan.
I knew that this new plan would make Lena angry, if not hate me totally. But it was for the collective good. And that was all the reason I needed.
I was going to destroy Jace!
